So pleased to see that my old pals MAINBRACE are at Lancaster. Anyone going there who han't heard them yet, do make an effort to catch their sets. They are good. I'm always surprised by the fact that they can sing regularly in the USA and Europe but get so little work on other UK festivals. They have powerful voices, they choose good songs, they sing with real swing, they do not waste the audience's time, they are professional to the nth degree. Check 'em out. You won't regret it.

If you get chance go along to the "Spirit of Lancashire " which will be at Glasson Dock over the weekend - the naming of the boat will be on Saturday 12.00 noon (ish) - these lads deserve all the support you can give.

We (The Elderly Brothers) have arranged sponsorship for them and our name will be crossing the Atlantic with them - you can do the same (only a pound a letter!!!) what a bargain - also would make a good present!! (better than an acre of the moon!)

So go along there's lots more going on there in conjunction with the Festival singing etc....

Just for info - The Radio Lancashire BBC Blue Bus is going up to Lancaster on Thursday 17th April - and would like to do the whole programme on a music basis - Maria Felix Vas (the presenter) would like to interview people, record music etc, for the show - the bus will be at The Three Mariners, Lancaster for the day with a transmission going out at 4.05pm to 4.30pm - why not pop along and see the bus (surf the internet) have a chat with Maria - and sing a shanty or two.... get into the festival mood early!

Ninety percent of our crew were Pollywogs, (that is a person who has not crossed the equator). We knew that we were all in for a good hazing. All of our Chief and First Class Petty Officers were Shellback. Most of them had served on the battleships that went down at Pearl Harbor. Tradition was a big thing with them.

The day before we were to go over, the Shellbacks constructed the 'Royal Bath.' This was a pool about four feet deep and about seven by seven feet square.   A handy billy was then rigged and sea water was pumped into the 'Royal Bath' and mixed with diesel oil. Word was passed that Davie Jones was to come aboard that evening and we were to entertain him on the fantail. Some had to dance for him, others told stories or recited poetry. I was lucky in being in a singing group.   After the entertainment we were presented with a summons to King Neptune's Court the next day.

Breakfast was piped at eight bells for all shellbacks the next morning. Our ensign had been lowered and the 'Jolly Roger' was hoisted. This meant that the hazing was underway. Steak and eggs was the meal for the Shellbacks. We had hard tack and coffee made with salt water.

Various charges were levied against the Pollywogs. Officers were dealt with more harshly than enlisted men. We had a lieutenant who had been in the First World War. He was a Mustang with 25 years of service , but had never crossed the line. Accused of painting the town when we were in New York, he was made to climb the rigging with a bucket of paint. Another officer was ordered to the forecastle with two coke bottles for binoculars to keep a look out of the mail buoy.   I was accused of impersonating an Irishman, and had to eat an Irish apple, (which was a raw onion).

As you knelt before the Judge in King Neptune's Court, you were ordered to kiss the Royal Baby. He was the ugliest guy on the ship. A bucket of mustard was hidden behind him and when you went to kiss him, he reached back to the bucket and hit you with a handful of mustard. The royal barber was next. He had electric clippers that kept shocking you as he cut your hair. After that came the 'Royal Bath.' You had to say Shellback three times as they were dunking you.

Running the gauntlet was the final stage of the exercise. A tarp was spread out on deck and greased with graphite, over it about a foot was strung a cargo net. You had to crawl along the tarp for about ten yards with Shellbacks paddling you and another at the end with a fire hose to drive you back just when you thought you were through. When it was all over you could take a deep breath and with great pride say: Now I am a Shellback.

Ms Lemon - answered what I thought was a question to me re a remark I'd made.... but it looks like it wasn't ---- but it does answer your question in part as I answered it on the other thread - there are several Lancasters - but both of the current threads refer to the same one - confusing ain't it.

Maybe the festival will be twice as good????? in stereo??

Bad news......   

The three Mariners Landlord has had to put a block on any singing during Thursday day other than at 4.00-4.30pm when the "show" goes out! - scared of the PEL Police? as his license does't start until Friday.......

so don't turn up for a sing during the day on Thursday there as it won't be going ahead.......

The BBC Blue bus WILL be there and everyone is welcome to pop in have a play on the computers/internet or try and stump Chris with a PC problem (Not PEL PC....)

NB. NO SINGING................. Till FRIDAY.................. DOH!!

NNB This has NO EFFECT on the festival proper just BBC cover on Thursday.

So who of the Shellbacks ended up with a picnic they didn't prepare? I put down ours while you guys were singing in the shopping mall outside Boots (it was in a carrier bag, Sainsburys I think) and when I went back to get it, it had gone, and a bag (Tescos I think)with three bottles of water was left in it's place! Oh we were so hungry!
