I have a chorus of a song in my head which starts:"And I'll never get over those blue eyes" and end with something about "I'll sleep in my bed once again".

I cannot think what the song is or who sang it. Any suggestions?

As Guest says, the first line is I Still Miss Someone, but the other line sounds like it's from Dylan's Tomorrow Is A Long Time ("then I'll LIE in my bed once again").

I think two songs are being confused. The line in "I Still Miss Someone" is not about sleeping in one's bed yet again, but about "missing those arms around me when all our love was there".

The line about "sleeping in my bed once again" was originally crafted by Mister Shakespeare ("blow, blow, thou winter winde....") IIRC, and then lifted nearly whole to be put to work in Mister Dylan's Sweatshop of Borrowed Lyrics ("And only if my own true love were waiting...").

Subject: Lyr Add: I'M THINKING TONIGHT OF MY BLUE EYES
From: Sandy Mc Lean

Here's another one about blue eyes:

I'M THINKING TONIGHT OF MY BLUE EYES

As recorded by Gene Autry, 1942
Written by A.P. Carter

G                            C
Would be better for us had we never
       D7                     G
In this wide, wicked world ever met.
                                 C
For the pleasures we've both seen together,
      D7                     G
I am sure love I'll never forget.

Chorus 1:
Oh, I'm thinking tonight of my blue eyes,
Who is sailing far over the sea.
Oh, I'm thinking tonight of my blue eyes,
And I wonder if she ever thinks of me?

Verse 2:
Oh you told me one time that you loved me,
And you promised that we'd never part.
But a link in the chain has been broken
Leaves me now with a sad and aching heart.

Chorus 2:
Oh I'm thinking tonight of my blue eyes,
Who is waiting far over the sea.
Oh I'm thinking tonight of her only,
And I wonder if she ever thinks of me?

Verse 3:
When in time the cold grey should enclose me,
Will you come dear and shed just one tear?
Will you say to the strangers around you,
A poor heart you've broken lies here?

Repeat Chorus 2

Amos: The 'O Westron Wind(e)' predates Shakepeare by centuries. Perhaps the finest poem of the last millenium.

O westron wind

O westron wind when wilt thou blow

That the small rain down can rain?

Christ! that my love were in my arms

And I in my bed again!

It's even prettier in the muddled anglish. Johnny's song is certainly the one Mel is thinking of, and dear to me as my late brother and I used 2 sing it. AND the rest of you are right that he's conflating it with Bob's tune.

cheers from Oak in the Acorn Labryrinth

Sandy McLean, the song you quote brings back memories. We had it on an old 78 record. It was a long time ago but I guess it must have been Gene Autry singing. I also remember the parody my mother and aunties used to sing, 'O I'm thinking tonight of my black eyes, They were blue 'til he double-crossed me'.

The lines are from a Joan Baez song

My apologies -- it is quite correct that the original ("blow, blow, thou winter winde....") predates Shaxpere considerably. Sorry for the gaffe.

The song Joan B recorded on one of her early albums (I never got over those blue eyes--I see them everywhere) is properly called "I Still Miss Someone" and although it might have been written by Joanie after her first round with Mister Zimmerman I think it was from earlier. Anyone have a definitive date on it?

I can't attest to it not being older, but every reference to "I Still Miss Someone" that I've ever seen attributes the song to Johnny Cash.

cheers,

david

This sounds like it might be (I'll never see my blue eyes again)This tune was taken from an old reel from the Radio Station KNX barn Dance in the 1930s
