Songs of Comfort

Yesterday, a 6th grader in my friend's school was hit by a car and killed. Since music often has a way to heal spiritually and emotionally, can you suggest any songs appropriate for elementary school students to sing? Off the top of my head, I think of the spirituals, eg, "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands" but the music should be non-denominational. I'd appreciate any help. Thank you.

There is a C.D. out with people like Gordon Bok, Jim Stewart..I forget who else..called Before their time...it has some beautiful songs on it..like turning toward the morning...it was put together for a young person who died (suicide I think) and I think is sold to benefit a hospice...a google search should help you find it. mg

For some reason, the Hobo's Lullaby always seems comforting.

Let It Be by the Beatles is meaningful, as well as Bridge Over Troubles Water and Sounds of Silence by Simon and Garfunkle.

I know there are others I cannot think of right now. I am sorry to hear of this tragedy. May the music help bring some comfort.

While I applaud your intentions and great big heart, maybe this isn't what you really want to do... maybe focusing a group on this little one's loss is going to take away one place where there's some degree of respite from the most intense feelings. Sometimes people need a space where it's safe to NOT look at it all, to get their attention back together before plunging to the depths once again. I'm not saying to ignore or invalidate the loss, or that anything in life can be normal in the face of that sort of loss. But maybe doing anything more than letting the child you know their loss and are there, if needed, will open a can of worms you're not able to handle in the group setting. Might be a good idea to talk it over with fellow professionals to see what people think.
