What a great event this was last year. We sat all night around a blazing fire, drinking, smoking, singing, fiddling & having a grand 'ol time. I made several friends and learnt a few new tunes. well worth it!

Knockholt has a genuine singing postman with an amazing voice. Track him down (ask any local). My sister lived there and I sang with him in the kitchen of their house when he came to deliver the mail. He isn't a folkie, does G&S etc but who cares? He's bound to know a couple of folk songs, and can pick stuff up on one hearing. Rope him in.

Anyway all mexicans AND Welsh are invited to this great get together sing-around-a-bonfire.

I first went to Knockholt some ??? years ago. It is a superb field - with excellent facilities. Folkmob provide real decent toilets and a fire to keep everyone warm throughout the whole of the evening. You can watch the sun go down - the stars at night - and the returning early morning sun. Guess how many songs and tunes you can get through during that.
Also, take the short walk down to the Tally for midday meals, early supper or just a real decent pint.
This is the place to be.

Sorry to disappoint you guys, but Pat has only commissioned FIVE gallons of beer for Knockholt. While it will be based on the BRYANT'S PORCUPINE BREWERY loopy juice brew "OLD SPIKEY" it will be a black treacle porter and will be named "KNOCKHOLT KNOCKOUT". If any of the 10 gals of beer which I am brewing for our Folk Barbecue on 8th June is left over, I will re-prime it and donate it to Knockholt.

Linda and I are planning to bring our caravan to Knockholt, and will be spending some of our time there. While the "Tally-Ho" is the nearest pub to the site, we can suggest another "folk friendly" pub not very far away if anyone wants a session. "The Bricklayers Arms" is at Chipstead just down the hill towards Sevenoaks - you can probably see it from the site - you can definitely see the lake that it's next to. It's lovely pub serving Harvey's beer on gravity feed, the stone floor gives it wonderful acoustics. It's a regular venue for "Travelling Folk" and it's on the circuit of "Ravensbourne Morris".

I was first persuaded to go to Knockholt some nine years ago. I enjoyed it so much I have been going back since.
I still remember when we had the old chemical loo stuck in the middle of the field. You zipped up the frame and hoped that it would not collapse whilst you were inside it(It often did). How things have come on since then. We might even up the 2 to 3 at this rate.
It is a really good site and you may receive the odd visit from a friendly horse or sheep ( okay I'm joking they are kept in the next field but they are friendly) - The rustling fire keeps going all night and there is the chance to try out all those new songs - there is always an appreciative audience.
Starting from tomorrow I am going to be putting some Knockholt photo's on my web site - DB should take a look - PS Dave great idea about the 'Knockholt Knockholt'.

Certainly missed out on the e-mail attachment. If this is like the beer Dave brewed last year we are in for an excellent treat.

Nice to hear Joe may be there. Hopefully some of Monokey are also turning up.Shame it will be the first year for ages without Nigel. We need a video link. Starting to put some new photo's on the web site -Who can remember the old house in the adjacent field - I know - it is difficult to remember much at all after a weekend at Knockholt.
Nothing to do at all with Knockholt but Fraser Nimmo is on at the Tudor Barn next Wednesday - I believe as a kick off to his new CD Launch and summer gig with Show of Hands. Is this right?.
Finally,is it true that there are going to be a number of new workshops at Knockholt?.I enjoyed the bodhran, harp and guitar workshops last year.

If the MkI Experimental Motorised Bungalow is up to it, me & misses will attempt the massive journey of more than 15 miles. The AA has been forewarned.
Kay will be bringing her portable dance floor, but at 2ft x 2ft 6in, it aint up to massed display teams or N.W. Morris.
Will there be banjo accompaniment? (I dont relish singing "South Australia" at breakneck speed anymore, getting too old!!!)

Knockholt also falls over the weekend of the summer solstice (June 21st) it's a time to spend around the fire with friends and celebrate the turning of the year.

Now Midsummer Solstice is year's shortest Night.
The longest of Day's and summer's full height.
Diana, creatress, great mother and queen
with her consort, Herne Oak-King, out walking is seen.

Midsummer we dance, we dance round the fire
rejoicing the turning of year
twixt Solstice and lammas, the flowers give way
to fruit, nuts and berries, and corn day by day.

Blessings

Nigel not only improvised with a makeshift bar last year - and at two in the morning - I still have memories of him serving up coctails under a clear starlit sky - heaven!.
He is also the one who put together the Knockholt shower - The first time we have been able to provide one. Great shame he will not be at this year's festival. However, our loss is Australia's gain and I am sure we will see him again.
Do we know if Kit is going this year - there is a shortage of banjo players.
Are there going to be any rambles - never seem to get further than the Tally - Ho?.
Johnny Phelps has pledged to come on Saturday - well worth the wait.

I'd dispute "in the heart of Kent" - you're only just over the border - Knockholt railway station is actually in the London Borough of Bromley.

Ah Dave but we're not talking about boroughs, it's counties - you see most of the London Borough of Bromley is in the County of Kent.

Anyway maybe not the physical centre of the but the spiritual heart - at least for the few days that our mob are there!

Mexican Pete used to sing things to the tune of "The Mexican Hat Dance" such as:-

"I'm Mexican Pete, zee bad bandit
Zee bad bandit I always 'ave bin
I tie Senor Hank to zee railroad
An' zat is zee end of 'im !"

"I'm Mexican Pete ze bad bandit
I've captured the little Cassy

"I'm Mexican Pete ze bad bandit

I'm getting loads of people say they want to come but may have problems getting to the field. If there is anyone who is going on Friday night/Saturday and have a spare space can they let us know via the Folkmob site or whatever so we can make arrangements. There may be a pint of Knockholt Knockout in it.
Remember to bring the suntan lotion - It gets really hot over the weekend. There will also be our huge (ish) tent for those who want to escape the heat at the weekend - but then there is also the Tally-Ho down the road. They do a roaring trade that weekend - and the food is superb!.
Anyone who wants to get rid of the old wardrobe or fencing is welcome to take the ideal opportunity to contribute to the fire - it never goes out.

Dave K - "It gets really hot over the weekend" - don't you think that you're tempting providence with a statement like that. Going by the present weather, I'd pack a raincoat. If we all pack wet-weather gear and lots of sweaters, it'll probably be a heatwave.

Linda has only just received the sad news that Bridget probably won't be coming down because she was unable to book an apex ticket from Scotland. We are working on her to see if she can get a cheap flight instead.

People have been asking if they can bring kids & dogs. Well if they are well behaved and kept under reasonable control no problem. remember that we have a huge bonfire so please do not alow kids to mess with it as we have appointed fire marshalls (health & safety legislation etc...) Also could dog owners clean or scoop any poop that the dogs do in the main field (it burns well!!!)

It's a similiar brew to the "Old Spiney" so anyone who was at the BBQ will have an idea what it should be like. I regret to say that there was no beer left over from Sunday for me to bring along.

10 years at Knockholt this year what the heck if it rains a bit - there will be no need for Nigel's shower.
Looking forward to the tequila slammers under the stars on Saturday and the good company. I saw Joe Bazouki last week during his gig with the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain and he confirmed he will be coming along Saturday at some time.
We intend to still enjoy ourselves as we have done in the past during less favourable weather conditions - A rare treat is that Grant Davis and family are coming along from Bath to help keep the fire going all weekend. John 'E' Phelps will also be performing with his new band. Plus with all the Mudcat friends we met at Dave's BQ and others it promises to be a great weekend. There is the field - the 3 loos, masses of firewood and the Tally- Ho - the rest is up to us.

Should be getting the caravan there this evening, although it won't be properly tenanted until Friday.

When are you planning to set up the beer ? - it could do with at least 48 hours to settle - BEFORE you try it. It needs to be kept in the shade with a wet/damp towel over it. If you need to borrow a gazebo (from our herd) let me know. I can also let you have a gas cylinder so that you can put a blanket pressure on it between boozing sessions - I put a valve on the barrel for the purpose.

Greetings to the rest of the world from your roving correspondent, Knockholt – Friday 9pm

It's a lovely evening here on the site – the camp fire is burning and there seems to be a big enough woodpile (the remains of a large dead tree) to keep it that way. A singaround is in progress and as soon as I've eaten, I'll be joining them.

'Catters here include Woodsie, Dave K, Dipsodeb, Richard Bridge, Aidan Crossley, Bassic, Dead Horse and of course Linda and myself.

What a fantastic weekend. I think everyone enjoyed themselves, I would like to thank everyone who turned up and gave the whole festy a great atmosphere. I would pearticularly like to thank Dave Bryant for brewing us a barrel of the best brew around, and Kay for her faster than lightning dance steps...... I don't know how the hell she managed it after drinking the punch, but thanks anyway. Joe Bazouki and the Missing Puddings (what can I say!!) Joe never ceases to entertain, baked beans and trainers as prizes!!? what was that about ;)
I think the most bizzarre sight for me out of the whole weekend, and trust me there was several I could choose from, was Dave Silk standing in the middle of a field full of clover with viking hat and wig playing a Double Bass, it was surreal. ;)LOL I'd better stop now before I get to the juicy bits, and leave the telling to someone else.

I tried to post this from the site yesterday morning, but there seemed to be a problem on Mudcat.

Saturday night was wonderful - great atmosphere - enhanced by Dipsodeb's lethal punch and the "Knockholt Knockout" (which turned out quite well I think).

The wonderful thing about Knockholt is that it's such a laid back weekend - you can do what you like when you like (well almost - one of the sheep was not very co-operative).

Thanks to Mick, Sue, Pat, Dipsodeb and all those who helped to make it so much fun.

PS I left Rock Chick out of my list of 'catters and there was also another one (in the trailer tent) whose name I can't remember - (please post and insert your name in the Knockholt Mudcat roll of honour).

Arriving late on Wednesday night
we saw the logs were burning bright
amidst the flickering firelight yellow
we found the gang relaxed and mellow.

Woodsie and Graham the fire did stoke
as Debs and Pat chilled in the smoke
the music filled our hearts and head
and Davie K. sloped off to bed.

Thursday brought friends old and new
Grant and Nat with bairns too
that night our singing rose the dead
and Davie K. sloped off to bed.

Friday night with Sheilagh singing
both our voices shrill and ringing
Jim said "God that noise is dire"
then flung himself upon the fire.

Saturday lazing in the shade
sipping beer and lemonade
we might almost be in Devon
kids and dogs in seventh heaven.

A viking playing double bass
with flaxon hair and fair a'face
Dave Silk of his nuts a'sharing
what a handsome suit he's wearing.

Richards camera captures all
he wants us for a photo call
around the fire and all together
basking in the glorious weather

The marquees up the punch is ready
Daves Knockholt knockout's strong and heady
Pat and Debs have done us proud
Joe Bazouki's singing loud.

The party is going with a swing
and Davie K. begins to sing
in south Australia I was born
who'll be up to greet the dawn?

Auntie Olive at seventy nine
takes a puff and feels so fine
swigs Jack Daniels from the bottle
it bucks her up and rev's her throttle.

Mick is snoring to the beat
of Dead Horses Misses flying feet
Tequila slammers, punch and wine
I've lost the plot but feeling fine.

I try to sing but lose the knack
I guess it's time to hit the sack
so grab the dog and fall asleep
and dream of vikings, nuts and sheep.

Hope you all enjoyed yourself as much as we did and thanks to everyone who took home a bag of rubbish. The farmer was very pleased that we had a great time and the sheep expressed their relief that no revellers were wearing wellingtons.
see you soon
Sue and Mick.

Streaky always has to forget something - it was his guitar stand at our charity ceilidh. Perhaps he get's distracted by Val's "assets" - I do sometimes.

Although it's not strictly connected with Knockholt, many of the people there came to our last barbecue.

Therefore Linda and I would like to announce that the provisional date for the next one will be Sunday, 14th October (2pm onwards as usual).

Sorry that it's so late in the season, (and apologies to anyone going to Bromyard) but we'll be at Walton-on-the-Naze festival the previous week.

I'll start a new thread nearer the date.

Err Dave, which year would that be? 14th October is a Tuesday in 2003 :0)

Whereas 14th September is a Sunday, clashing with Bromyard (when I am otherwise occupied).

Have fun whenever it is.

Yes Noreen, you are correct. We are intending to have an 'end of summer ' barbecue on the 14th September. Dave has already started the two barrels of beer. Hope to see many of you there.

Will two barrels be enough.
How come the Knockholt Knockolt went so quick - Was it a record???
especially mixed with the whatever was in the punch and the tequila slammers - who remembers Saturday night???

There do seem to have been a few heads on the Sunday (!), but for my taste the Knockout was too sticky at the front and too spicey on the finish - nice-ish but not as good as the Old Spiney. And I am very suspicious that either the strength was undermarked or there was something else in it....

Well Dave, was there someting else in it?? I don't think it very likely.. I think Dave is a purist when it comes to his beer.
Maybe the strength was a little under estimated. Certainly not tampered with, I hope I misread your meaning Richard, I have often been accused of paranoia, so it's probably just me :,)

Moby Slick (the Great White Snail) made it all the way back home, where it is causing panic among the neighbours. They think Travellers have moved in, and are locking up their valuables, pets, children, etc. I might take it to work and put it through the bus-wash in order to give it some air of respectability before it forays out to Broadstairs.

I have racked, blended, and repressurised the beer left over from the BBQ - there's about 3/4 barrel - it tastes good. Have decided to rename it:

                  "Knockers"

Will probably bring it up with the caravan on Thursday - it shouldn't need to settle as it's now "bright".

Well the Lord moves in mysterious ways.

It now is definite(ish) I won't need to be in Nottingham Thursday night, and very likely I won't need to be in Nottingham Friday night, although I may need to be running a big sound rig in Gravesend Saturday Night.

So I might see that beer again before I die!

Well Friday night was very pleasant, and DK delighted us all. One moody and garrulous lady got told off by all of us. DB arrived briefly to open the beer (Hurrah!) which was different but good and as deadly as ever. Even the shaky eggs were good, and there were no banjos.

The combination of red wine, lager, DB's magic potion, and neat ouzo did little for my affability (or guts!!) in the morning however, nor indeed my enthusiasm for running a PA rig tonight!!

I suppose the rest of you are still enjoying it (just). Roll on next June.

Hello I'm here!

Roll on next June for the next one!

I enjoyed the food at the Tally Ho pub - better than the usual fried stuff on a calor gas stove that always sticks to the pan!

Wasn't that old bag Beryl a pain - don't know why she bothers coming to our events all she does is whinge "The fire's too hot" "The fire's too cold" "My name's Emily" "give me a cigarette" "I'm superior to you low life scum"

Dave Kenningham was great - He was singing his poor heart out to the blonde haired young lady - bless him!

Cockers

Linda and I should be there. Do remember that my 60th (well 59.975) Birthday BBQ will be two weeks earlier than this weekend on Sun 6th June, but by Knockholt I will actually be an sexagenarian - eligible for a bus pass. 0n the weekend in between we plan to be at the Moreton Village Festival (near Ongar, Essex) - a great little weekend.

I will be quite happy to bring the small PA (only 30w per channel) and a couple of radio mikes again for the nightime sessions - I think that it worked well last time (the autumn session). I know that one of the organisers was against the idea - what's the general opinion ?   Even I find it a hard push singing without a mike out in the open, and many singers are likely to be virtually inaudible without a small amount of amplification.
