Lancaster Folkclub

Hi folks, reading about all these meetungs and get-togethers made me very nostalgic. In the late seventies I lived in Lancaster for a while. The folkclub at the Yorkshire House was then in full swing. Even in the 80s, when I dropped in on my way to Scotland it - and some of the "old" members - were still there. And today? Is there still a folkclub at Lancaster? If so, where is it, in case I pass through again in the near future? Are any of the 70s crew around?

Very little happens folk wise nowadays - the Gregson centre has an Irish music session on Tuesday night and a more eclectic music session on Thursday, but both tend to be music only. On Friday night there is an informal sing/music session in Halton, which varies in number (and quality!) and there may be one being set up again on a Sunday evening. Yorkshire house finished quite a while ago and Jim has since died.
Don't know who you used to know - if you pm me, or answer this, I'll let you know if they are still around!

we're just down the coast at Blackpool - John & I( Penny Black ) were looking for a session on a Friday night a few weeks ago but could only find a "Musicians session" at Charnock Richard (very good but we're mainly singists!) have you any more info on the Halton sessions??

- in fact that's where we found out about the Charnock Richard night - couldn't find anything else apart from Preston (where we have been know to frequent) No Lancaster on a Friday though... (unless these tired old eyes missed it)

Hi Barbara,
It was only today that I managed to check on my question about the Lancaster Folkclub. Sad to hear that the Yorkshire House is no more and that Jim is dead. I've been wrecking my brain trying to remember who was organizing the folkclub back then (1975/76), but the only name that came to mind immediately was Bob (whom I met when I was up there again in the 80s). As far as I remember he was running a caravan park, where my friend and I stayed on that last visit. Then there was a female singer whom I admired (I remember one of the songs she did going "Pendle oh Pendle thou standest alone"), and she was the first one I heard the "Blacksmith" from. Some of my big heroes performed at the Yorkshire House folk concerts of that time, e.g. June Tabor. It was where I started singing myself, so I've got great memories of that club and the times we had there. Mike Lyddiard was also a regular performer there. Some other people come to mind, but unfortunately only their faces, not their names, and I bet they'll look very different today after almost thirty years. It's amazing how memories do come back while I'm writing this. I think I'll get into touch with one of my friends who was at university with me at that time and was also a regular folkclub member. Perhaps his memory for names is better than mine. Thanks for your reply and for making me even more nostalgic. Hope to hear from you again.

I was involved running the university folk club in Lancaster in the late 60s/early 70s...but I dont recall if it was still active by the late 70s. i was busier on the pub session scene by then in Lancaster, and other musical projects. Names I remember from the Yorkshire House town club would be Bert Byram, and Gladys Muschamp who was the big cheese as I recall.
   The Plough in Galgate was the centre of a lot of folk and other musical activities in those days, though maybe wound down by 76: 70 would maybe have been the heyday for that pub.

I go up to Glasson dock most weekends as I have a boat there. If anyone would be interested in getting a weekend sinaround going in Lancaster then post this page. It only takes one or two to get things started and before you know it you have a weekly session going.
                                                             I don't know the area so someone else will have to take the lead.

Sorry I won't be able to join you as I live in Germany. We, i.e. a couple of people from 100km round Bremen , meet once a month in a town called Osterholz-Scharmbeck to have a session there, mostly instrumental though, I'm afraid. If I get up to the Lancaster area again, even if it's only for a couple of days, I'll try to get into touch with you folks.
