Subject: Schnukenack Reinhardt From: Frankham Date: 15 May 03 - 12:41 PM Hi, One of the best jazz fiddlers in the world is a Gypsy cousin of Djang who has the unlikely name of Schnukenack. I've been searching for CDs of his playing and keep getting shuttled to obscure jazz clubs and music stores in Germany. Does anyone know how to purchase his CDs? Come to think of it, it might be Schnuckenack. Whatta' name! Whatta' player! But for my money he's the Django of the fiddle. Frank Hamilton |

Subject: RE: Schnukenack Reinhardt From: Joe Offer Date: 15 May 03 - 02:39 PM Hi, Frank - I hadn't heard of him, but he sure sounds interesting. This page (click) calls him "der Paganini auf der Geige" (the Paganini of the fiddle) and "Legende des deutschen Zigeunerjazz" (legend of German Gypsy jazz). The spelling of his name is Schnuckenack Reinhardt, so I'm going to change the spelling of the thread title. His German label is Capitol-EMI, but I see no listing for him at US retailers. The German label has only one recording listed, issued in 1989. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Schnuckenack Reinhardt (jazz fiddler) From: GUEST Date: 16 May 03 - 02:48 AM joe, if he is as gypsy as his cousins you should be able to find him on hundreds of different people's albums. Do check out the shop page on the django swingpage as S.B.P pointed out you might have luck |
Subject: RE: Schnuckenack Reinhardt (jazz fiddler) From: Joe Offer Date: 16 May 03 - 04:12 AM This Google Search will lead you to lots of information, but most of it is in German. This page (click) is the best I found. It says that Schnuckenack is the great-nephew of Django. Schnuckenack is now in his 80's and lives near Heidelberg. He has three wives and "more than enough" children. The Schnuckenack Reinhardt Quintet sold almost a million records in the 1970's. Nowadays, two of his sons perform in the Schnuckenack-Reinhardt-Sextet. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Schnuckenack Reinhardt (jazz fiddler) From: Frankham Date: 16 May 03 - 02:08 PM Hi Steve, Thanks. Nothing there on the www.hotclub.co.uk. about the elusive Schnuckenack. Just a reference to a tune he wrote that Moreno (jazzgypsyguitarist) played. Thanks Joe. I'll check the bio. With a name like Schnuckenack, ya' gotta' get it right. I heard a Schnuckenack cut on a website devoted to jazz violin that blew me away! Incredible energy and imagination. So, Ach tung! Alles, wo ist Schnuckenack? |

Subject: RE: Schnuckenack Reinhardt (jazz fiddler) From: GUEST,Ewan McVicar Date: 19 May 03 - 04:47 AM A wondrous name. Django is astonishing enough. Who else is lurking under that surname? |
Subject: RE: Schnuckenack Reinhardt (jazz fiddler) From: Steve Benbows protege Date: 19 May 03 - 02:31 PM Good question. ANSWER: Joseph(Django's brother), Lulu,Doro,Babik (Django's son) Fanto and Yayo and that's probably only a fraction of it. All of the above names can be found in Raymond Charle's book on Maccaferri guitars. Hope that answers some of the question Ewan. Best regards. Pete. |
Subject: RE: Schnuckenack Reinhardt (jazz fiddler) From: GUEST,MCP Date: 20 May 03 - 01:26 PM Charles Delauney's Django Rheinhardt has (AFAIK) no mention of him. However Ian Cruickshank's Django's Gypsies has a photograph of him with the caption "Shnukenack Reinhardt, Germany, circa 1980. (Distant relation to Django, holding violin given to him by the Pope)." (!) There is also a photo of the record cover of the eponymous Shnukenack Reinhardt record - same as Joe linked to above. Mick |

Subject: RE: Schnuckenack Reinhardt (jazz fiddler) From: Frankham Date: 21 May 03 - 08:34 PM Bill, one apparently. "Star Quality". Can't find it in the States and don't know how to get Capitol/EMI to help me get it. If you have his recordings, you're lucky! I wish someone would get those masters and re-release. Frank Hamilton |
