Subject: Obit: Robert Stack From: GUEST Date: 15 May 03 - 01:07 PM 'Untouchables' star Robert Stack dies at 84 Robert Stack, whose granite-eyed stare and menacing baritone spelled trouble for television's fictional criminals in "The Untouchables" and real ones in "Unsolved Mysteries," died at his home. He was 84. ... Stack was born into a performing arts family in Los Angeles. His great-great-grandfather opened one of the city's first theaters, and his grandparents, uncle and mother were opera singers. His father, however, "was the only Irishman in County Kerry who couldn't sing, and that's whose singing voice I got," Stack said in 1998. ... His role as Ness in "The Untouchables" brought him a best actor Emmy in 1960. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Robert Stack From: Sorcha Date: 15 May 03 - 10:55 PM Damme! They are falling like flies this week....wouldn't surprise me if Johnny Cash is soon.........I'll miss him and his music terribly, but I think he is ready, esp. with June gone. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Robert Stack From: musicmick Date: 16 May 03 - 03:24 AM Wasn't Robert Stack a champion skeet shooter? I'm sure I read, somewhere, he was in the Skeet Shooting Hall of Fame, if such an edifice exists. I am old enough to remember Robert Stack's film career. He was a dashing leading man in the early 1940's. Then, he got type cast as a tough G-Man. It wasn't until AIRPLANE that he got a meaty comic role and he performed it beautifully. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Robert Stack From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 16 May 03 - 09:30 AM I enjoyed the series (despite the fact that one gangster,( was it Frank Nitti?)played I think by Neville Brand, was killed at least twice!) but thought Stack's acting very wooden. He was my mother's favourite, though, so he may be in for a shock when he gets to the pearly gates! RtS |

Subject: RE: Obit: Robert Stack From: catspaw49 Date: 16 May 03 - 01:19 PM Give it a break Dave....... Robert Stack was a champion skeet shooter and even as a teenager was giving lessons to a lot of Hollywood stars which helped open the acting door for him. He is also a member of the National Skeet Hall of Fame. I remember as a kid that a lot of the sample pictures in the picture frams were of Robert Stack in a Skeet jacket, often with a shotgun.....remember those? I'm sad to see him go. Like Leslie Nielson, I think he really enjoyed the roles he got late in his career as a chance to poke a little fun at himself (or at least the type of characters he generally portrayed). Caddyshack II was a classic role for him, perhaps even better than Airplane. Overall, a nice guy from what others have said, and a loyal friend. Not a bad way to be described. Spaw |
