Subject: RE: BS: From Sorcha Re: PM's From: open mike Date: 17 May 03 - 12:15 AM sorcha, i thought you said you were changing servers, and i thought that might mean a new e-mail for you too? |
Subject: RE: BS: From Sorcha Re: PM's From: GUEST,Sorch Date: 17 May 03 - 10:40 AM No, OM, I don't think I said I was changing servers.......not sure how you got there. Not really an option, because as a First Responder household we must have the phone line available and so need cable modem. Current server is the only one in this area who offers that. I'll just keep struggling along...........pisses me off though. |
Subject: RE: BS: From Sorcha Re: PM's From: GUEST,Jon Date: 17 May 03 - 10:58 AM sorcha, if my theory is right, you have even more problems now. Neither of the nameserver's I think your ISP uses are finding Mudcat now! I'll try later on Pip's machine to see if I can work out a little workaround and get back to you if it works. |
Subject: RE: BS: From Sorcha Re: PM's From: GUEST,Herself Date: 17 May 03 - 11:01 AM Oh lordy...........wish I knew what to do, who to call, etc. |
Subject: RE: BS: From Sorcha Re: PM's From: artbrooks Date: 17 May 03 - 11:12 AM Broadband? |
Subject: RE: BS: From Sorcha Re: PM's From: Amos Date: 17 May 03 - 12:04 PM First people I'd call are the broadband suppliers. BTW, I don't see that you need any excuse for having cable modem. It's a daisy!! But not, of course, when it is glitching you out. A |
Subject: RE: BS: From Sorcha Re: PM's From: GUEST Date: 17 May 03 - 12:22 PM Email sent sorcha, I'm not sure if it will work but is worth a try... Jon |
Subject: RE: BS: From Sorcha Re: PM's From: GUEST,Me Date: 17 May 03 - 12:22 PM "Broadband"? Don't forget that you are talking to Mrs. Stoopid. Just what does broadband mean? Is the broadband server the same as my ISP?, i.e., communicomm? They have been virtually no help at all with this.....say it's not their prob, it's a Mudcat prob. Not my machine because I can't get in at the cop shop. Going to a friend's house in a bit who has a diff. server, will try from there too. |
Subject: RE: BS: From Sorcha Re: PM's From: GUEST Date: 17 May 03 - 12:24 PM broadband is high speed internet...like cable or dsl.... |
Subject: RE: BS: From Sorcha Re: PM's From: GUEST Date: 17 May 03 - 12:30 PM Oh, OK, thanks. |
Subject: RE: BS: From Sorcha Re: PM's From: artbrooks Date: 17 May 03 - 12:36 PM Sorcha, go here and follow the instructions. Earthlink will tell you if they have broadband available for your telephone number. Broadband uses your existing phone lines, but it has a signal splitter so that the computer and phone can be in use at the same time. |
Subject: RE: BS: From Sorcha Re: PM's From: GUEST,Jon Date: 17 May 03 - 12:43 PM Amos, sorcha's ISP (and broadband provider) have been far from helpful... A whois search for communicomm.com provides the following information: Domain servers in listed order: NS1.SEQUOIANET.COM 63.97.220.9 NS2.SEQUOIANET.COM 63.97.220.10 Nameserver searches for mudcat.org using Netscan Tools on these at the moment yield (ns1 example given): Looking up [mudcat.org] Server: ns1.sequoianet.com Address: 63.97.220.9 *** ns1.sequoianet.com can't find mudcat.org: No response from server [End Query] The same search for folkinfo.org yeilds: Looking up [folkinfo.org] Server: ns1.sequoianet.com Address: 63.97.220.9 Non-authoritative answer: Name: folkinfo.org Address: 217.79.111.104 [End Query] My thoughts are/were that the nameservers would eventually re-instate Mudcat... Subject: RE: BS: From Sorcha Re: PM's From: GUEST,amergin Date: 17 May 03 - 12:52 PM Sorcha...try these dns servers see if they will work... 209.181.12.1 204.147.80.5 also do you have issues keeping your cookies at other sites? |
Subject: RE: BS: From Sorcha Re: PM's From: GUEST Date: 17 May 03 - 12:53 PM oh and do you use a proxy server? |
Subject: RE: BS: From Sorcha Re: PM's From: GUEST,Jon Date: 17 May 03 - 12:55 PM Cheers amergin maybe you can take over from me. I've tried finding sorcha some instructions on how to do it which I think she is working on now and suggesting numbers but I am a little out of my depth. I've never used ME, cable, dealt with this type of problem before... |
Subject: RE: BS: From Sorcha Re: PM's From: GUEST,Herself Date: 17 May 03 - 12:56 PM No, Jon's cookies are fine and so are others that are 'accidentally' set just because I go there. Don't know 'proxy server'....?? Will try the other numbers now. |
Subject: RE: BS: From Sorcha Re: PM's From: GUEST Date: 17 May 03 - 12:57 PM 'Gin, I get Error 404/Cannot be displayed at both of those numbers. |
Subject: RE: BS: From Sorcha Re: PM's From: GUEST Date: 17 May 03 - 01:01 PM ok... here goes...try this...go to start, settings, control panel, and double click on network... are you connecting through usb or ethernet? |
Subject: RE: BS: From Sorcha Re: PM's From: GUEST,Jon Date: 17 May 03 - 01:03 PM Just one thought before I bow out... am I right in thinking that sorcha will probably need to reboot pc before any new numbers take effect? |
Subject: RE: BS: From Sorcha Re: PM's From: GUEST,gin Date: 17 May 03 - 01:06 PM yes she will be...unfortunately so... |
Subject: RE: BS: From Sorcha Re: PM's From: GUEST,gin Date: 17 May 03 - 01:18 PM forgot to add sorry... once you go in there you should see tcp/ip or your ethernet...or tcp/ip of a usb adapter...whichever one you use...you click on one and then go to properties... now you may want to write it down, scorch...go to the dns configuration tab...and click on enable dns...then in the computer name just put whatever (unless your isp provides one, which anymore is unlikely) then go to the dns server search order field and add one of those sets of numbers listed above... 209.181.12.1 204.147.80.5 and click add....and then add the second one...and then add... and then click ok and ok again and reboot... if it works great...if it doesn't all you gotta do is go back into the control panel and into network and the tcp/ip properties...and the dns tab...just disable and reboot again... another thing also...you may try are those ip numbers Jon listed above... 63.97.220.9 63.97.220.10 |
Subject: RE: BS: From Sorcha Re: PM's From: Sorcha Date: 17 May 03 - 02:13 PM Been there, done that, 'Gin. I'm currently on a friends pooter, diff. ISP. Tis one is scottsbluff.net and I don't seem to have probs here. |
Subject: RE: BS: From Sorcha Re: PM's From: GUEST,gin Date: 17 May 03 - 02:19 PM well, hell...maybe you should consider moving isps....this one is odd though... one other thing...do you have a firewall or antivirus? if so..have you tried disabling them?...cause it seems like something is blocking the mudcat's information from reaching your pc....or at least corrupting it...very odd... |
Subject: RE: BS: From Sorcha Re: PM's From: GUEST,Sorch, back at home Date: 17 May 03 - 02:33 PM No firewall, and just Norton for virus. I can try disabling it... |
Subject: RE: BS: From Sorcha Re: PM's From: GUEST Date: 17 May 03 - 02:35 PM Nope, didn't help. What I think I will do is get my Geek over here to read this whole thread, and have him call communicomm for me.....he knows more than I do about stuff to tell them. |
Subject: RE: BS: From Sorcha Re: PM's From: GUEST,Jon Date: 17 May 03 - 02:41 PM what I can report is this: The lookup theory of mine works in as much as the numbers I trace of Sorcha's friend's ISP find Mudcat. One of gin's works and the one I'd mailed sorcha with does. The other 2 at the moment, belonging to sorcha's ISP (63.97.220.9, 63.97.220.10) will not find Mudcat. Sorcha, 1. are you sure you are setting DNS on the correct TCP/IP thingy (you could have more than one and it needs to be the one for your connection) 2. Which numbers did you go through when "you'd been through all that". If it was ones from your ISP, you would be guaranteed failure. 3. Have you been methodical at each step? Other than that I haven't a clue. I suppose it could still be your computer but I really do find it strange that is the ISP who's name servers I can't find mudgat.org listed on... |
Subject: RE: BS: From Sorcha Re: PM's From: GUEST Date: 17 May 03 - 02:46 PM OK, I'll go and try all the numbers. Got nothing else to do anyway........... |
Subject: RE: BS: From Sorcha Re: PM's From: GUEST,amergin Date: 17 May 03 - 03:49 PM Scorch...I know sometime a go we had some problems with folks being able to email people in other domains...or going to sites as well...and it was a server side issue... now you said you get the same problem at the police station?? do they have the same isp? now the way some call centers work is that they try to get the customer off the phone as quickly as possible...and that the techs have limits on their call times...high averages can result in termination....so techs get creative in the reasons how they get customers off the phone...like having you unplug the modem for an hour...one contract i worked for was notorious for that...they ended up going belly up... If this continues it just may be worth looking up other options... Good luck. |
Subject: RE: BS: From Sorcha Re: PM's From: Sorcha Date: 17 May 03 - 03:52 PM Well, I'm here for a bit........yes, Amergin, the cop shop has same server as here at home. I did the Configuration thing with 209.181.12.1 and I'm in for now. We'll see if it holds........ |

Subject: RE: BS: From Sorcha Re: PM's From: GUEST,Jon Date: 19 May 03 - 07:24 PM If it's any consolation Sorcha, I'm back with the Freeserve problem at the Annexe. It's worse than yours in as much as an IP route is not available and Pip (and at times me if it's "tech") really does need to check on the place so an alternative "pay as you go" ISP gets used. (BTW, I'd lay odds that Freeserve would tell me it is a site problem even though an alternative ISP finds it...) I tried the sort of workaround I thought would work for you here today for me. I'm clearly missing something. What I find is that if I use Freeserve's DNS (just not specify DNS - let it decide), I get a 404 - page not found. If I supply an alternative number, it seems to find the site at first (have seen it say "website found waiting for reply") but then end up with a "Gateway Error"/"DNS Timeout". Wish I knew more about Networks... Jon |
