Ah, indeed DMcG: moving is a notorious Black-Hole time. But I haven't moved house for 37 years; and all these literary BlackHoleries & SafePlaceries have occurred within that time-frame...

You are lucky it is half a dozen books. We have moved house quite a lot and for us they seem to disappear in packing-case-sized groups. Even when we count every case.

... and books!: there are some half-dozen I know I had once that have vanished from the shelves. One or two I have replaced; others have retired to a safe place or just gone down the unowot...

Must be at least ¼C ago that a nice purple fashion waistcoat/jacket of Valerie's vanished from the wardrobe where it was always kept, and has never reappeared. She hadn't worn it for an overnite stay anywhere where she might have left it behind, and certainly hadn't lent it to anyone. But it just wasn't there, it was down the Black Hole; whence it has never since emerged.

I wonder if posting this will bring it back -- a bit late, as she has been dead for 7 years now...

Those "invisible inter-dimensional cracks that open up and swallow things" --

-- we call them Black Holes in our house. 'Where the hell is such and such?' Emma will ask. 'Must have gone down the Black Hole,' I will reply.

The other thing, with my first wife Valerie, was 'a safe place'. "I can't find such and such," she used to say, "and I know I put it in a safe place." "No wonder you can't find it," I would respond. So now an alternative reply to, "Where can the wotsit be?", might be, "You put it in a safe place, of course."

OK, this one worked the other way around.

Went to the store to get cat food, intending to go to the fried chicken place near my old house, over by the university.

Hear on the radio that it's homecoming weekend so I really don't want to go anywhere near the university, so I think I might make my own fried chicken.

At store, decide not to make fried chicken myself after all.

At car, putting groceries in the car - lo and behold, there are 2 packets of chicken I didn't buy. Check the receipt - nope, I really didn't buy them. The person ahead of me in line had only bought a pumpkin, and there was nobody behind me in line, so where did this magic chicken come from?

I think the gods wanted me to make my own fried chicken.

Your key will turn up after the existing lock is destroyed, Ebbie. Such is the code of the universe. Unless... did you look in the bedclothes? Did you look in...

Don't you HATE it when people start asking you if you looked "here or there". I think killing such people should carry a maximum penalty of manslaughter and a minimum penalty of "thanks for getting rid of that annoying twit".

The mystery of the hidden hoodie has been solved! I had given up hope, quite literally, after searching, off and on, for three days. Imagine, if you can, one losing a hoodie in their own home. Then, a series of events took place which led to sheer joy upon the discovery of the location of said hoodie and the accompanying realization that I hadn't 'lost it' altogether... yet.

Three morns ago, I had to reach under the blankets and sheet to grab hold of the fitted sheet and wrestle it back into place at the foot of the bed. Two morns ago, I had to do the same on the opposite side of the foot of the bed. I found these incidents puzzling, as one would when such rarely happens. Yesterday morn, both sides were ajar. I tried to do the same for both sides but it proved an unruly task so I stripped the bedding and found the corner pulling hoodie between the two blankets along the edge of the foot of the bed.

How did it get there? Monday night football. I fell asleep at halftime. Upon a loud cheer when The Steelers scored, I awoke and groggily turned off the TV and the heat pump and stumbled in darkness to my roost. As is my custom, I had earlier turned down the bedding, during which I usually place the top blanket in a position from which it can be easily retrieved if and when the temperature in the bedroom necessitates such. It all came together. I had doffed my hoodie and, in my grogginess, misplaced it near the foot of the bed instead on the bed chest. It's a nice bed chest, fashioned by an artisan in my basement. Red oak with maple scroll accents, all finished with a golden oak stain but I digress. As the temperature did fall during the night, after I was awakened by the urge to purge caused by Monday night football quaffs and satisfied the urge, I pulled up the top blanket and gently returned to my slumber, thereby unwittingly entombing my hoodie where it would remain for four days before rescue.

Doesn't this tale give you a feeling of... I can't get that time back?

Muggle-tricking shrinking keys!

Checkbook was in the car. I had it with me in case I needed more than was on my debit card account at the vet. Didn't need it till the very next day, to pay rent... checkbook nowhere. Not in car where I had put it. Not back in usual place where I might have put it and not remembered it. And I have to pay rent. And it's a money market account so I can't just go get a counter check. Ask one twin to help search; fruitless. Ask other twin - Oh, yeah, sorry, I stuck it in the cat carrier when I was bringing the cat back in from the car.

At least it wasn't me this time. I would never have looked in the cat carrier and it wasn't me who put the bloody thing there in the first place. I feel SO much better.

I have one going on right now.

When I moved in this apartment complex almost two years ago I was issued a storage cell for my overflow. I put the key - every time - in a certain drawer.

Humph. A few weeks ago I put something in the cell and I remember very well that I did NOT put the key in the proper place. I even remember smiling at the notion that it might be hard to find it again.

Well. I can't find it. My concert series will start in little more than a week and that is where I keep the supplies. So I need the silly thing. Finally gave up and have arranged with Maintenance to slice open the padlock tomorrow. I have a new padlock ready and waiting.

Of course, as soon as I do that I will find the old key.

I got a new camera with an eensy weensy cable connection - that is smaller than the micro one.

I remembered putting it somewhere thinking that I would have to remember where.

I remembered the thinking, not the where.

I looked in all the drawers in the room - there are seven of them.

I looked again - I looked four times. All the drawers

Then I remembered to take my tablets. I looked in the box - there was the cable. I had looked behind the box. I had looked under the box, just not in it.

Sigh.

pieces of paper often disappear here so I sometimes print on colour!

When I got home from a festival last weekend I couldn't find my scales which normally live in my living room & are taken into my bathroom when needed. How can anyone lose a large, thick square of toughened glass? But I did & looked everywhere - even in the bedroom & kitchen!

Several days later I moved some of the paper on my table & there it was - it normally lives somewhere on the floor ...

I won't go in to the other stuff I can't find, or examples of things I've forgotten to do (why did I go into the kitchen/bedroom/wherever?) or people's names or ...

sandra

speaking of names & faces, at a recent Festival I asked a friend the name of the man we had both spoken to shortly before as I couldn't remember his name, tho he knew me & my folk club. He said he didn't know, either, tho they have known each other & played together in sessions for years. He gave up worrying about forgetting names some years back when he was talking to an expert on brains & memory who said we only have room for about 200 names in the section of our brain which remembers names & space for zillions of faces in the visual section!

Why Do We Remember Faces but Not Names?

Years ago I couldn't find my carton of milk. It was an almost full 2-quart one and I knew I had used it at least once. But I knew there was no way I would have put it in the garbage.

I kept opening the refrigerator and staring in- I couldn't think of any other place it could be. But it wasn't there. So I had eggs for breakfast.

Later that day I found the carton in the refrigerator. It was wedged into the shelf in the door. It was a tight fit; I can't imagine why I didn't notice what I was doing.

Now that I'm old everyone would blame it on my age.

Me, I tend to discover I've put on an unmatched pair only when the light improves to the point when it's too late to ddo anything about it. The one consolation is I've got a matching pair at home, the one downside that any colleagues who notice will conclude I've worn the same pair two days running, starting the rumour thay I never made it home last night...snigger, snigger.

Dead Horse, your black socks are all here in Sydney, waiting for you. Do you have my thick fuzzy one? I really liked it and its mate is waiting.

Actually, my theory is that socks that start out matching sometimes mutate so that one fades and the other doesn't, one gets longer than the other, and - here's the really tricky bit - one of them changes its weave so as to look completely different.

I liked that song, beadie. Is there a tune for it?

From: beadie
Date: 28 May 03 - 12:33 PM

. . . According to Hank Card of the Austin Lounge Lizards, your stuff is on : . . .

       THE OTHER SHORE

As we reach the twilight hours of our fleeting earthly time
And know we will not see the sun tomorrow
We may think with deep regret of all the things we leave behind
But oh, my friends, do not give in to sorrow

On the other shore, on the other shore
We will reunite with all the things we ever owned before
Our single socks will all be to their rightful pairs restored
We'll meet all our possessions on the other shore

As we near those golden sidewalks floating on the clouds above
Assuming heaven is our destination
We may glance behind for one last look at everything we love
But truly there's no call for reservations

On the other shore, on the other shore
We'll have piles and piles of jeans we can't fit into anymore
We'll wear all those crazy cowboy shirts we got from Fred Labour
We'll meet all our possessions on the other shore

We'll find books we bought in college and sold for half-price unread
And sacks and sacks of earring backs lost under someone's bed
And baseball cards and army men and model planes galore
And every tiny plastic high-heel Barbie ever wore

On the other shore, on the other shore
We'll have giant storage units free of charge forevermore
Where our tax receipts will all be saved in bags upon the floor
We'll meet all our possessions . . .

On the other shore, on the other shore
We'll find National Geographics from 1974
Our children's art will cover God's refrigerator door
We'll meet all our possessions on the other shore

Well, my wife and I have officially joined the "Where's My Stuff?" brigade. When we stripped our bed linens for laundering last week, my wife's favorite down pillow simply disappeared. It is not under the bed. It is not in the laundry room. It is not in the closet. She is not wearing it on her head. We have no idea where it went. It seems to have just fallen into another dimension. A wormhole that can eat socks, guitar picks and pocketchange is one thing, but one that can consume an Eiderdown bed pillow is scary. I'm keeping the cats out of that part of the house just in case.

Dandelion tea is a diuretic. When I was a kid we used to call them "pee-the-beds" and the legend was that if you plucked one, you would wet the bed that night. Now, how did we know any connection with urination?

no - he just liked having a cheap labor source. *grin* There was never a problem getting us out of the house...there was always the swamp to play in (contests to see who could smash the most skunk cabbages) or sword fighting with the japenese bamboo (it split easily - and stung like the dickens!) or measuring the depth of the mudholes in the salt marsh (most easily done by jumping in) or playing tag in the ruins of the old grist mill, or follow the leader through all the above locations, or cannon-balling the tourists at the boardwalk, or tickling trout at the hatchery, or swimming (half a dozen locations within walking distance).

well done Rustic; dandelions are a VERY useful plant! If you can find a clean source of the young greens in spring they are very health-giving...the roasted root is a nice coffee substitute or stretcher...and my dad used to make dandelion wine when I was a kid. He also would gather and steam the greens in spring...

Just remember the old story.

THe Curate was used to cycling around the Parish. One day his bicycle went missing - so he asked the Bishop what to do.

Ah ! said the Bishop, Preach on the 10 commandments next Sunday, and see if the Thief has a concience.

Come the Monday the Bishop telephoned the Curate, did you get you bike back ??

Yes said the Curate, when I got to "Thou shall not comit Adultary", I remembered where I'd left it.

Boom Boom

Best thing to do with the dandelions is, make wine with the flowers (the gypsy spring tonic), eat the young tender greens and roasted roots are used as a coffee substitute (like Chicory). Root is also used for liver and diabetes. Great herb for the blood.
Recipe for wine; add ginger and lemon slices for extra flavor- 1 gallon boiling water, 3 1/2 lbs. sugar to each one gallon of flowers. Flowers only no green left on them. Add a wine yeast. Sit 14 days room temp. strain, drink or bottle. Cheers!
Peace, Rustic
