50 years ago today (local time of the event, for this special occasion; tomorrow in Mudcat time) Edmund Hillary reportedly said the words of the thread title when returning to the base camp after being the first man on the Everest. Let us not forget the close second, Tenzing Norgay, the man on the only summit photo.

Interesting that the anniversary should be so noticed, only a few years ago no one was really interested. I think the discovery of Mallory's body, and the films, moved the whole enterprise back into the spotlight. Deservedly. I particularly like the way that Sir Edmund devoted himself to the Nepalese people afterwards. He and Tenzing -- really two noble spirits -- men to match the mountain, I think.

The Supreme Court decided that he was.

Under our system, the Supreme Court's decision is final.

Live with it.

Or amend the Constitution. But don't simply deny what is. It just emphasizes the reasons that the conservatives have been able to push the liberals around lately. The liberals had been pushing the conservatives around for so long that they began to think that what they said was true just because they said it.

Or so it seems to me - from a position off to one side of both.

I had hoped that with the news of the past few days, this thread might be about knocking the pompous ass off kilter so that our country might swing back in balance. Peter T has it right, I lived in the same state as Dick Cheney and I wouldn't wish that bastard on my worst enemy.

And 50 years on let's hear it for Ming Kipa Sherpa 15 years old who got to the top of Everest last Thursday night with her 30 year old sister Lhapka Sherpa (the only woman to have climbed Everest 3 times) and also her brother Mingma Myalu, 24. ... shortly after another Sherpa Pemba Dorjie broke the world record for the fastest ascent of Everest 12 hours and 45 minutes.

IN a autobiography only published after "Sherpa" Tenzing 's death in 1986, Hillary revealed that he had reached the summit before him ..

I think it's fair to say that a solo attempt to summit Everest in 1953 would have been unlikely to succeed.

IMHO Tenzing Norgay & Edmund Hillary 'knocked the bastard off' together.

Jeez, I've done a fair amount of reading about Hillary....what a 'class', though 'old-school' guy. Honour would mean so much to him.

I recently read John Krakour(sp)'s book describing all the professional guides dragging Texas millionaires and New York socialites up the mountain, and I can just imagine what Hillary thinks of all that.

The recent TV program had it that both Hillary and Tensing were quite clear it was Hillary by one stride but in India (Tensing's adopted country) they willed it to be Tensing and even tricked Tensing into giving his autograph only to find it had been a statement to the effect that it was Tensing (who was not exactly literate). The Indian national press wanted it so. Such was the sensitivity that Hillary had to reword his official report to the Everest Society a day or two later to read "And WE stepped onto the top". After the rigours of training and acclimatisation together (not to mention a few heroic 'saves' by Tensing) Hillary would not hesitate to share the glory with the whole team. He is that kind of guy.

A thread about the various 'Everest climbers' could be so interesting. Why are we even responding to stuff about American Politics? What's the connection in the first place? Was the distraction really worth it to anybody?
