Subject: BS: We've knocked the bastard off From: Wolfgang Date: 28 May 03 - 02:35 PM 50 years ago today (local time of the event, for this special occasion; tomorrow in Mudcat time) Edmund Hillary reportedly said the words of the thread title when returning to the base camp after being the first man on the Everest. Let us not forget the close second, Tenzing Norgay, the man on the only summit photo. Hats off to both of you. Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: BS: We've knocked the bastard off From: Peter T. Date: 28 May 03 - 02:56 PM Interesting that the anniversary should be so noticed, only a few years ago no one was really interested. I think the discovery of Mallory's body, and the films, moved the whole enterprise back into the spotlight. Deservedly. I particularly like the way that Sir Edmund devoted himself to the Nepalese people afterwards. He and Tenzing -- really two noble spirits -- men to match the mountain, I think. yours, Peter T. |
Subject: RE: BS: We've knocked the bastard off From: open mike Date: 28 May 03 - 03:42 PM were the images on the film from the camera found able to be reproduced? is there a web wsite where they can be viewed? |
Subject: RE: BS: We've knocked the bastard off From: katlaughing Date: 28 May 03 - 03:56 PM And now they are thankfully calling for it to be closed, after over 1300 climbers and their resultant trash. I am glad they are using this anniversary to do so. (I thought this might have been about Dumbya. *sigh*) |
Subject: RE: BS: We've knocked the bastard off From: Bev and Jerry Date: 28 May 03 - 04:10 PM Wolf: We read recently that Hillary is the only person who knows which one of them reached the summit first. Neither man has ever revealed the answer and Norgay is dead. Bev and Jerry |
Subject: RE: BS: We've knocked the bastard off From: GUEST Date: 28 May 03 - 04:11 PM well we could hope, katdarlin amergin |
Subject: RE: BS: We've knocked the bastard off From: GUEST,Q Date: 28 May 03 - 04:33 PM It is best to say both reached the summit at the same time and leave it at that. The subject is becoming quite heated among the Sherpas. |
Subject: RE: BS: We've knocked the bastard off From: Renegade Date: 28 May 03 - 04:50 PM katlaughing and amergin: Were you two hoping that someone had assassinated the President of the United States? Let's trust you were not, but God help you if you were. I recommend you clarify your statements. Bill |
Subject: RE: BS: We've knocked the bastard off From: GUEST Date: 28 May 03 - 04:57 PM first of all he is not the president.... second of all...i was hoping that some one had knocked him off that ego pedestal he has set himself on... and knowing kat...she would not wish death on anyone... now piss off and mind your own business. |
Subject: RE: BS: We've knocked the bastard off From: Peter T. Date: 28 May 03 - 05:50 PM Not to worry, those two little words Dick Cheney are the antidote to any such fear. yours, Peter T. |
Subject: RE: BS: We've knocked the bastard off From: Midchuck Date: 28 May 03 - 06:22 PM He is the President. You may not like it. But he is. The Supreme Court decided that he was. Under our system, the Supreme Court's decision is final. Live with it. Or amend the Constitution. But don't simply deny what is. It just emphasizes the reasons that the conservatives have been able to push the liberals around lately. The liberals had been pushing the conservatives around for so long that they began to think that what they said was true just because they said it. Or so it seems to me - from a position off to one side of both. P. |
Subject: RE: BS: We've knocked the bastard off From: katlaughing Date: 28 May 03 - 06:33 PM I had hoped that with the news of the past few days, this thread might be about knocking the pompous ass off kilter so that our country might swing back in balance. Peter T has it right, I lived in the same state as Dick Cheney and I wouldn't wish that bastard on my worst enemy. Sorry for the drift, Peter. Entirely my fault. |
Subject: RE: BS: We've knocked the bastard off From: Nemesis Date: 28 May 03 - 06:44 PM And 50 years on let's hear it for Ming Kipa Sherpa 15 years old who got to the top of Everest last Thursday night with her 30 year old sister Lhapka Sherpa (the only woman to have climbed Everest 3 times) and also her brother Mingma Myalu, 24. ... shortly after another Sherpa Pemba Dorjie broke the world record for the fastest ascent of Everest 12 hours and 45 minutes. IN a autobiography only published after "Sherpa" Tenzing 's death in 1986, Hillary revealed that he had reached the summit before him .. |
Subject: RE: BS: We've knocked the bastard off From: GUEST,Q Date: 28 May 03 - 07:13 PM Did he, now? |
Subject: RE: BS: We've knocked the bastard off From: katlaughing Date: 28 May 03 - 07:28 PM Back to "which he?" |
Subject: RE: BS: We've knocked the bastard off From: Wolfgang Date: 29 May 03 - 07:15 AM I think they have found Mallory, but not the films? The mountaineering community seems to be sure that they died while climbing up and not down. I'm not completely sure but I think this is the summit photo of Tenzing Norgay Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: BS: We've knocked the bastard off From: Wolfgang Date: 29 May 03 - 07:23 AM The Guardian article from 1953 Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: BS: We've knocked the bastard off From: John J Date: 29 May 03 - 07:59 AM I think it's fair to say that a solo attempt to summit Everest in 1953 would have been unlikely to succeed. IMHO Tenzing Norgay & Edmund Hillary 'knocked the bastard off' together. John |
Subject: RE: BS: We've knocked the bastard off From: Rick Fielding Date: 29 May 03 - 08:45 AM Jeez, I've done a fair amount of reading about Hillary....what a 'class', though 'old-school' guy. Honour would mean so much to him. I recently read John Krakour(sp)'s book describing all the professional guides dragging Texas millionaires and New York socialites up the mountain, and I can just imagine what Hillary thinks of all that. Subject: RE: BS: We've knocked the bastard off From: GUEST Date: 29 May 03 - 10:45 AM Bev and Jerry Nemesis The recent TV program had it that both Hillary and Tensing were quite clear it was Hillary by one stride but in India (Tensing's adopted country) they willed it to be Tensing and even tricked Tensing into giving his autograph only to find it had been a statement to the effect that it was Tensing (who was not exactly literate). The Indian national press wanted it so. Such was the sensitivity that Hillary had to reword his official report to the Everest Society a day or two later to read "And WE stepped onto the top". After the rigours of training and acclimatisation together (not to mention a few heroic 'saves' by Tensing) Hillary would not hesitate to share the glory with the whole team. He is that kind of guy. |
Subject: RE: BS: We've knocked the bastard off From: Renegade Date: 29 May 03 - 11:25 AM Hey Guest: "Piss off and mind your own business." ? I'll forego the juvenile response, or that you say so as a "Guest". Question: is this forum for only those who disagree with the current administration? All others can piss off? Someone let me know. I don't post much, but I do read a lot of threads. If this is left-leaning only, conservatives need not read or respond, I'll move on. Bill |
Subject: RE: BS: We've knocked the bastard off From: Peter T. Date: 29 May 03 - 04:08 PM This thread has a run of base camp litterers, accent on the base. yours, Peter T. |
Subject: RE: BS: We've knocked the bastard off From: kendall Date: 30 May 03 - 08:15 AM There is room for all here, all we wask is some civility. |
Subject: RE: BS: We've knocked the bastard off From: Midchuck Date: 30 May 03 - 04:50 PM "...a little plain see-vility, and that of the commonest God damndest kind!" P. |
Subject: RE: BS: We've knocked the bastard off From: Rick Fielding Date: 31 May 03 - 12:09 PM A thread about the various 'Everest climbers' could be so interesting. Why are we even responding to stuff about American Politics? What's the connection in the first place? Was the distraction really worth it to anybody? Jeez. Rick |
