Subject: Warwick Festival
From: Apache
Date: 30 May 03 - 10:35 AM

I'm thinking of going to Warwick Folk Festival this year maybe as a steward, maybe not (I didn't really enjoy stewarding last time), but my dad's not going so I have no way of getting there.

Is anyone from around the Chester area going to Warwick this year, if so would I be able to get a lift there and back? I'll pay some petrol money or whatever, but it would be so much easier than getting the train.

The only lugage I'd have would be tent, burgan, guitar, backpack.

Thank you.

Regards,
Apache

Final programme now online

Jude, the Late Night Sing is run my Brian Rogers in the acoustically-beautiful Arts Centre, 10.30pm-1am.

Last years sessions were attended by excellent singers, with much eager and expert audience participation. I remember I sang Until the Dark Time Ends (Written by Allouette Iselin from Nelson NH) because the time seemed just right. Even though nobody in the room had ever heard it before, they picked up the refrains on first hearing, and by the final repeat the roof was raised. A very moving experience.

Where'd you live, brid widder? I will be driving there from Amersham Friday noon.

Noreen, serenade on. I packed the rose (for my teeth) already. And the tight waistcoat.

On second thoughts....forget the rose.

Walking on air right now. Just had a cracking review of the 3rd CD from Mike Blair, should go into the next Unicorn, and Taplas doing a feature of yours truly in their August/September edition. And Roy Bailey just emailed to say he's been singing "Friends Like These" all over Australia(I wonder if he'll do it at Warwick, can't wait to hear it).

El Greko

I think it's quite a big detour from Amersham to Brid, if your end destination is Warwick. Still, you might as well carry on walking on air since Martyn Wyndham-Read pointed out at Herga last night that Vin Garbutt is singing one of your songs too.

What a great festival. Most of the "usual suspects" were there, but I also got the chance to not only put names to new faces, but to hear them perform as well: glorious harmonies from Pistachio singing with Linda Kelly, and I finally got to hear some of El Greko's wonderful songs.

And not forgetting our foreign visitors, especially Desdemona from Massachusets, and Maggie and Les from Hull!

Only disappointment was the late-night singing outside Moor & Coast only lasted till 6 a.m. on Sunday morning!

Excellent Warwick -especially the late night sing on saturday that finally killed off my voice for good. Lovely to hear Roy Bailey singing El Greco's song -we wus proud of ya George!!! Usual heavenly sounds in the late night art centre and finally the spendiferous Bendy Balloon Rapper -a triumph for MC Fat who had experienced earlier technical difficulties when his pump failed him!You had to be there to quite believe your eyes -many a reputation lost and many a hernia made. Even June Tabor cracked a joke -no really! Hazel and I have decided we really are going to rehearse next year -that's the singing not the bendy balloon rapper! ( I wonder if that man ever recovered from having Noreen Pistachio Maggie My Guru and myself invade his version of Homeward Bound whilst dressing him up in a bendy balloon hat?) So many Mudcatters I havent met before and who will no doubt avoid me in future -roll on Whitby!

We arrived and pitched our tents in the stair-rod-like rain fall. I was directed to put my trailer in (it now turns out) the wrong place. I slept very little due to the loudest generator I've ever heard, giving power to the coffee trader, coupled with singing (and rugby player-type bawling) going on till dawn and beyond all three nights. The orgainsers had sorted out the sound problem in the marquee so that not a lot of sound came from it when the concerts were on. Yea great so all we could hear was the concert of generators in the trading area.

Did I enjoy Warwick? Only just. Had it not been for my assistant, Schantieman, I would have to say no, but he managed to help me keep my sanity. God knows how, because he didn't sleep much either. If Dick doesn't sort out the power supplies, I'm most definately not going next year.

Shame we missed the rapper - Geoff was all set to play for them but they had finished before we got there. Bit disappointed with the finale concert - sort of got used to madcap conga dancing and plane throwing. Looking forward to next years already. And mgas speak for yourself I am very strange - who wants to be ordinary!:0)

Most enjoyable, rainy Saturday afternoon/evening notwithstanding. It was splendid to meet Snuffy, Tig, the Badger....and too many pints of Dragonslayer (in a good way)! The Saturday night concert was wonderful, as were too many pick-up jams to mention....and brilliant morris teams all over town--the Witch Men made a particularly strong inmpression on me & mine for obvious reasons; the quasi-punk side I've been semi-joking with some friends about starting now has an excellent visual model to work with!

I'm heading sorrowfully back to the States tomorrow, but wil try to co-ordinate next summer's visit with Whitby &/or Sidmouth & hope to meet more of you there!

D.

Didn't hear the generators Sal as we were camped right on the edge of the main Lemington Rd where the heavy commuter traffic started as early as 6a.m.,without any apparent respite, on Monday morning
Great singing on Sunday night, still deafened from standing next to John from Bradshaws. Loved the balloons Jim but how did you manage to fit them all into that tiny tent? Come to that how did you manage to fit? Best moments - waulking the cassocks with Snuffy and watching Maggie attempt a broom dance in the Guy Nelson bar.

Just got round to counting the Mudsheet and there are 50 names on it! 45 peoples signed themselves in or asked for us to sign for them, and at least 5 more were definates. Brid Widder, I've just checked and you AREN'T on so that makes 51 - and there were a few more who were there whose names I couldn't remember. It was great seeing you all.

Thanks to everyone who threw into the pot passed round by Bradshaw Mummers and/or were shocked when we were robbed of our Friday night takings. It was NOT the sort of behaviour to be expected at a festival but your response to the event restored our faith in human nature.

Tig

52, if you count someone who only made it to Pete Watkinson's singaround with the Wilsons in the Crown & Castle on Saturday (as Snuffy can confirm)...

epic weekend as ever, but the temp. roadway cost the festival dearly, I'm sure that Dick would be over the moon to get any donations no matter how small to drop back into festival funds. Go on squeeze out a little something if you can.

Yes a great festival and I am glad I did not miss the balloon rapper. Excellent! Black Swan eat your heart out.

The finale was a bit flat. 2 years ago motl played more uptempo jigs etc. at the end which got people up and dancing. I tried a few paper aeroplanes from the back with no effect! But Loose Chippings are hard act to follow.

Looking forward to Sidmouth

Ta much for a great festival. Apart from Rambling Rose (the technical director) forgetting to bring and buy the balloon pump causing the dance to be on Sunday night. Thanks to Ian for playing (Spiers & Boden were asked). May be a reprise at Whitby perhaps before Scratch Morris and perhaps Bromyard. Nice to see Red & White Rabbit make a surprise visit.

Sorry MC Fat, we completely forgot and missed it.

I hope this doesn't count me out of the band if it happens at Bromyard - I'm hoping to go as a punter, and will have more time to remember the important events.

Cheers

Squeezy

Ta much squeezy, your musical presence would be appreciated at Bromyard, count yourself in !!. Pete Grasby was miffed that he missed it !! Damion Barber was asked to join the team but may have to be scratched as he went home.It means we have got over a month (and Whitby) to practice (practice I hear you say !), the Topsy & Tim Balloon Rapper Side are here to stay.

Balloon Rapper?!!

Sounds like I missed something.   Mind you, the Southport Swords did a dance a few years ago in Pirate costume, using ten-inch plastic cutlasses. That was entertaining!

Balloon dancing has long been a tradition of the Whitby scratch as has plastic light savers, kitchen utensils, extending lances and any other weird and wonderful sticky type thing. Of course they don't actually wrap themselves up in them just hit them together!

Tig... I'm not on the list because sadly I wasn't there... well except in spirit... but hopefully by next year I'll be driving.... hopefully... so will certainly get there one way or another. I would have been disappointed at a closing concert without paper planes Nelly the elephant conga & Land of Hope & Gory but I think Loose Chippings do alternate years don't they?... I hope so

Only just surfacing now - too knackered yesterday, kept falling asleep. And of course, the post-festival blues have hit...It was my first Warwick, and if I make it through another year it surely won't be my last.

Thanks for the kind words Snuffy and Linda (and I'm proud that YOU were proud of me). It was indeed special seeing another "child" married off as it were. And I loved the singing at the Arts Theatre. But I am most proud of my stamina on Saturday night - I sloped off around 4:30am; and I led a shanty for the first time in my life (I still haven't dared tell Johnny Collins in case he laughs...).

High points in the concerts for me were June Tabor (first time I saw her live, every bit as good as on her CDs, face still of an angel, intensity in delivery, just wanted to kiss her arthritic hands better...) and discovering Anthony John Clarke (excellent delivery, lovely songs, LOADS of heart; why, he could have been Greek). Also, the Pack - who made me feel simply jealous and wanting to shed 30 years (VERY WELL DONE SAM!).

High point of the singing: Linda and Hazel's harmonies. And being allowed to join in a little on Saturday night.

Disappointment: I STILL haven't had a chance to merge voices with Noreen...

It was grand. But it's over...And I wanna go back (*sob*)

Oh yes and I enjoyed seeing so many good friends, including the late night singing, and some of the festival too!

The Topsy & Tim Bendy Baloon Rapper Team may have a more proficient band than dancers by the time Bromyard coms. Red & White Rabbit is practising her baloon modelling techniques to perfect the 'star' and Sooty is miffed about not being asked to join

Perhaps Sooty can hold up the lock at Bromyard, to make up for his disappointment?

Disappointment here as I'll not be at Bromyard to witness the perfected perfornmance... but I'll assist with preparations at Whitby :0)

Spiers and Boden were my favourite act at Warwick- first time I've seen them after several previous failed attempts. I will go a long way to hear them in future.

My 2nd Warwick may have started Wet but was Wonderful. Wish I'd been able to hear more performers but can't be in 2,3 or 4 places at once. Thoroughly enjoyed Moor & Coast early sessions...Shallow Brown by El Greco was truly original. Thanks for the chance to do more harmonies. I saw Maggie and her broomstick just before the balloon rap (riot). Sorry I had to drag my passengers away. Even more sorry at 0456hrs Monday... I needed the RAC to help me as my cam belt snapped 7 miles from home.Doubt I'll get to Whitby...Have fun all!

So sorry about your motor, Pistachio after such sterling service in driving us and singing lovely songs and harmonies and being geat company. There must be some way you can come to Whitby, it won't be the same without you.

Thanks to everyone for a great Warwick festival. Did it rain? We never really noticed. We had excellent sessions in the Roebuck, Zetland and Bowling Green with friends old and new and the singing in the Arts Centre was amazing.

We've always enjoyed Warwick Folk Festival. It was our first year stewarding and that gave us a bit better chance to notice just how well organised this Festival is. I think we all owe a great debt of thanks to the organisers.

Les and Maggie

The variety and quality of the booked acts together with the laid back friendly atmosphere around the first class facilities etc etc !!

Highlights - Roy Bailey, Cliar, Spiers and Boden,Pauline Cato's Pipe Workshop, Cicely Fox Smith presentation with songs by Danny and Joyce McCloud..........
