OK, well, this may get sidetracked fairly quickly but I could do with the dots (or abc) of the above tune which I believe is of ScotsIrish origin and has worked/is working its way into the American (old time) scene, possibly via the contradance repertoire. Its definitely in 4/4 time although a web search implies it might be related to the Irish Washerwoman (6/8 jig).

Any suggestions catters - before we get any creep.

Thanks, Nick

This page (click) says it IS Irish Washerwoman (no lyrics found for it) and refers back to the Mudcat for a couple verses. Irish WasherWoman is easily found; try JC's Tunefinder.

True Sorcha and thanks. The Washerwoman isn't a problem, but this is definitely a reel. A non-punning link - seriously meant - is that it would go well with 'Shove That Pigs Foot A Little Further In The Fire' as a medley.

Oh, but I think I'm opening myself up to some hamming - sorry, spamming - here. It is a serious enquiry though even if it might cause some amusement.

Nick

See The Fiddler's Companion: Result of search for "Snouts and Ears ":
SNOUTS AND EARS OF AMERICA, THE. American, Reel. USA, Pennsylvania. D Major. Standard. AABB. Bayard (1944) knew of only this version of the tune but noted that it was possible it was the a derivative of the familiar jig "The Irish Washerwoman" recast in 4/4 time, and with the order of parts reversed. Editorializing, he thought it made a distinct improvement on the suspected original melody. Breathnach (1976) also noted the similarity. Source for notated version: Mrs. Sarah Armstrong, 1943 (Derry, Pennsylvania) [Bayard]. Bayard (Hill Country Tunes), 1944; No. 58.

I have the tune at home - I'm at work (in the UK) at the moment. It's in the repertoire of a band I played in some 20 years ago. We used it for "American" dances - contras etc. I hadn't connected it with a Scottish origin, these things seem to have gone backwards and forwards a number of times.

I'll look it up later and get the dots or abc to you. Would you prefer any particular format?

Ah, it was worth a last shot, Thanks both.

Gerry I might possibly be able to get hold of the R.O.B but - as there might be a couple of versions judging by previous comments - I'd be most appreciative of the dots Mitch (scanned/emailed or snailmailed) or abc whichever is most convenient to you. I can't read dots but ... in the words of a UK tv ad ... I know a man who can!

Many thanks, Nick
