Subject: RE: BS: Happy Canada Day!!! From: Bardford Date: 02 Jul 03 - 12:38 AM Happy Canada Day back at ya, adoptanuck! My sweetie and I drove down to the Millarville (Alberta) Racetrack for the Canada Day Horse Races and market. Listened to the Barra MacNeils in the car for some CanCon. At the market I tried on some butter-soft deerskin gloves hand-made in the Indian tradition by an Asian woman. Bought a hotdog from the Anglican Church concession booth. Lost a buck at the Crown and Anchor wheel. Had a Budweiser in the beer garden ("Budweiser on Canada Day?" I ask. "It's brewed in Canada", the fella says.) Picked a horse to place in the first race. Bingo! Up forty cents on my 2 buck bet. My triactor came in on the next race, if you start from the bottom up. Watched a group of Australian youths cheer on their Aussie-flag-draped compatriot in a foot-race. Sat next to an older gentleman in the bleachers. He introduced himself to me by writing his name in his race program followed by "Can't talk. No voice." Cancer of the larynx. I thought I recognized his name as a writer of newspaper columns from a while back, and he confirmed my query. I did a little Google search just now and discovered he was also a highly decorated commander in the SAS in WW2, as well as a politician at both the local and provincial levels. Just goes to show. The rangey old guy in the well-worn straw cowboy hat sometimes ain't always been a cowboy. Took the long way home, south to Black Diamond, back through Turner Valley, Millarville and Bragg Creek, through the foothills south and west of Calgary. Lush and green, lots of different greens, where the grass meets the aspen meets the pines. Beautiful drive. This is a good country. |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy Canada Day!!! From: gnu Date: 02 Jul 03 - 06:18 AM Mowed, pruned, trimmed, scraped, painted, washed, and BBQ'd. To make all that truly Canehdian, I drank beer and cranked up The Guess Who, April Wine, Kim Mitchell, Rawlins Cross, Emile Benoit, etc, ...even Anne Murry. Mum snuck Anne into the blaster while I was taking a pee. Anyone seen Anne ? She seems to have disappeared from the selection. |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy Canada Day!!! From: Metchosin Date: 02 Jul 03 - 11:27 AM Took my auld mither for her 83rd Birthday to Gorge Road Park, to listen to my brother Russ play with the Walter Bodega Band. Lots of fun, did a little dancing, loved WB's version of Bill Gallaher's Shadow Boats, complete with the drum of the dragon boats on the Gorge, in the background. Returned to Russ's for a BBQ, a Birthday Party for Mum and a few old songs. Happy Birthday Mum! aren't you glad that this wonderful land has declared a national holiday for your birthday! Happy Birthday Canada!!! |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy Canada Day!!! From: hesperis Date: 02 Jul 03 - 03:37 PM I spent the day researching about housing laws and poverty. Was rather appalled that this much stupidity is happening in Canada. We're supposed to be the good guys. |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy Canada Day!!! From: Ebbie Date: 02 Jul 03 - 05:01 PM A segue here: A tourist from Calgary told me yesterday that not all Canadians are happy about the Winter Olympics selection, that every community goes heavily into debt, using money that is urgently needed elsewhere, and that other than the notoriety, there is really no long term benefit. We agreed that what should really be done is to make Greece the permanent home of all the Olympics Games with each nation putting in money for maintenance, innovation and security issues. What do you think? Ebbie |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy Canada Day!!! From: Bill D Date: 02 Jul 03 - 09:56 PM a fascinating 'article' in the Washington Post a couple days ago on the occasion....filled with the obligitory humor, but pretty flattering mostly. I know I'd consider moving there if this is the only information I had...*grin*... |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy Canada Day!!! From: Stilly River Sage Date: 05 Jul 24 - 10:58 AM I can't pull up Bill's article either, and I subscribe. It appears to date back to 2003. Not so bad as 1015, or even 2015, but still, not easily reached by the search engine. My Canadian cousins (up and down Alberta and one in BC) always made it clear that they knew a lot more about the US than we knew about Canada. That taunt always stuck with me and I try to stay abreast of news, but it was easier when I lived in a Northern Tier state and it was actually talked about in the local news more. Now I need to reach out and look for it. |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy Canada Day!!! From: Little Hawk Date: 09 Jul 24 - 08:43 AM Well, it was like usual. Some fireworks going off in the distance. Mariposa Folk Festival happened this past weekend in Orillia, as it does every year since 2000. I didn't go this time, but a few friends of mine did. |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy Canada Day!!! From: robomatic Date: 09 Jul 24 - 06:32 PM Many years ago I was in Boston College's main library, a unique place because it's built like a cathedral yet it was designed and built to be aa library. Anyhow, I was after a set of books that I could find nowhere else but I stumbled as I would often do, on found left-out books, and one was a book of Canadian history, and the thought went through my ignorant noggin: "HEY! Canadians have history!" Oh, Canada, we stand on guard for thee. |
