Subject: RE: Other parting songs? From: Joe Offer Date: 24 Aug 98 - 02:25 PM Hi, Kiwi - I got an e-mail from a rather extensive Barenaked Ladies Web site. They said the song was written by Barenaked Ladies founders Steve Page and Ed Robertson, and appeared on their 1992 debut album, Gordon. Click here for the Barenaked Ladies concert version of the lyrics, at the International Lyrics Server. The guy from the Web site said the song has been covered in concert by many groups, but not recorded. Still, I swear I've heard a cover recording, maybe on Fast Folk Musical Magazine. I'm still looking. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Other parting songs? From: Kiwi Date: 24 Aug 98 - 09:18 AM Joe, It's by the group called "Barenaked Ladies". That's the "If I had $1000000" that I mentioned in the first post to the thread. :) It's originally on the album _Gordon_, and there's also a concert version on the album _Rock Spectacle_. The concert version is slightly different, they added a few lines to the beginning before throwing in the first chorus. Slán, Kiwi |
Subject: Lyr Add: IF I HAD $1000000^^ From: Joe Offer Date: 22 Aug 98 - 04:14 PM I've heard a male folk duo perform this, and I can't remember who. Anybody know of recordings of this song, and who the songwriter is? (songwriter names added 8/24/98) -Joe Offer- If I Had $1000000 (If I Had A Million Dollars) recorded by Barenaked Ladies on Gordon, 1992 words and music by Barenaked Ladies founders Steve Page and Ed Robertson If I had a million dollars (If I had a million dollars) I'd buy you a house (I would buy you a house) If I had a million dollars (If I had a million dollars) I'd buy you furniture for your house (Maybe a nice chesterfield or an ottoman) If I had a million dollars (If I had a million dollars) I'd buy you a K-Car (a nice Reliant automobile) If I had a million dollars I'd buy your love. If I had a million dollars I'd build a tree fort in our yard If I had a million dollars You could help, it wouldn't be that hard If I had a million dollars Maybe we could put a refrigerator in there Wouldn't that be fabulous. If I had a million dollars (If I had a million dollars) I'd buy you a fur coat (but not a real fur coat that's cruel) If I had a million dollars (If I had a million dollars) I'd buy you an exotic pet (Like a llama or an emu) If I had a million dollars (If I had a million dollars) I'd buy you John Merrick's remains (All them crazy elephant bones) If I had a million dollars I'd buy your love. If I had a million dollars We wouldn't have to walk to the store If I had a million dollars We'd take a limousine 'cause it costs more If I had a million dollars We wouldn't have to eat Kraft Dinner. But we would. We'd actually make the treefort from the first chorus out of it. Mmm. If I had a million dollars (If I had a million dollars) I'd buy you a green dress (but not a real green dress, that's cruel) If I had a million dollars (If I had a million dollars) I'd buy you some art (a Picasso or a Garfunkel) If I had a million dollars (If I had a million dollars) I'd buy you a monkey (haven't you always wanted a monkey?) If I had a million dollars I'd buy your love. If I had a million dollars, If I had a million dollars, If I had a million dollars, If I had a million dollars I'd be rich. Subject: RE: Other parting songs? From: Pete Peterson Date: 22 Aug 98 - 01:27 PM last night, singing with friends, and it was time to leave, we deliberately chose three parting songs: Joseph Spence's "and I bid you goodnight" (Bob Woodcock) Si Kahn's "this is my home" (Tina Liza Jones) Carter Family "You've been a friend to me" (Pete Peterson) Tina says that she often closes with Lotus Dickey's setting of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's Psalm of Life Singing at nursing homes and wanting to leave them happily I often do "Show me the way to go home" PETE |
Subject: Other parting songs? From: Kiwi Date: 21 Aug 98 - 07:37 PM Since there's an existing thread discussing fitting parting songs, here's an interesting question for you: What strange, not-quite-parting songs have you heard or done at the end of a set? F'rinstance, the group Three Hams on Rye at the NY Renaissance Festival closes out the last set of every Faire day with "If I Had $1000000" by Barenaked Ladies. Slán, Kiwi |
