Subject: RE: Raglan Road - Recorded versions From: harpmolly Date: 15 Feb 08 - 06:58 PM Last November, when we had Liz Carroll & John Doyle in to play at the shop, there was a man in the audience they knew, and invited him up to do a song. His name was Dermot Somerville (of the bands Shanua and The Bodhran Brothers) and he proceeded to sing an unbelievably gorgeous version of "Raglan Road", which I somehow had got to the age of 32 without ever hearing before. I'm not ashamed to admit I had tears streaming down my face throughout the song (though to be fair, I'd just played the harp at the passing of a friend's wife a few days before, so was a little susceptible). I really recommend that everyone check out Dermot's version, which is on Shanua's album "The Butterfly Effect". |
Subject: RE: Raglan Road - Recorded versions From: oldhippie Date: 15 Feb 08 - 10:47 PM There's also a really good version by Loreena McKinnett. |
Subject: RE: Raglan Road - Recorded versions From: Anglo Date: 16 Feb 08 - 02:31 AM I haven't heard Dermot Somerville sing Raglan Road, I'm afraid, but he is a brilliant singer, whom, alas, I've not seen for a number of years. I fear Cleveland is something of a barrens as regards folk music, not to mention a good way from me in eastern NY state, and I haven't been out that way for a while. But I'm very glad Dermot is singing still, and singing well. He is the man. |
Subject: RE: Raglan Road - Recorded versions From: harpmolly Date: 16 Feb 08 - 03:10 PM And very nice, too. :) |
Subject: RE: Raglan Road - Recorded versions From: RobbieWilson Date: 16 Mar 08 - 05:26 AM On BBC4's "Folk Hibernia" on Friday night they showed a few seconds of Patrick Kavanagh himself singing this. Has anyone heard this all the way through or do you know where to find it? |
Subject: RE: Raglan Road - Recorded versions From: Colin Randall Date: 16 Mar 08 - 06:45 AM Must admit I never expected to read the words "I don't really like..." before mention of Luke Kelly's glorious version of the song. One man's meat and all that, I suppose. While I have enjoyed Raglan Road sung by Sinead O'Connor, Joan Osborne and others, I have never heard Eddie Walker's version and cannot wait to see how wonderful or disastrous (essentially the two views we see on this thread) it is. Cannot someone film him singing it and stick it on Youtube? |
Subject: RE: Raglan Road - Recorded versions From: GUEST,Santa Date: 16 Mar 08 - 08:45 AM Me too, I'm afraid. I'm new to the song, and following the thread on Loreena McKinnett's version I went looking for the RTE version of Luke Kelly. I thought it so over the top as to be a satire on Irish folk singing, that he was taking the, begging your pardon, mick. |
Subject: RE: Raglan Road - Recorded versions From: RobbieWilson Date: 16 Mar 08 - 10:39 PM I watched that this afternoon. Thought the singing was wonderful but found it hard to get past the banjo |
Subject: RE: Raglan Road - Recorded versions From: JHW Date: 17 Mar 08 - 06:16 PM I'm guessing that Colin Randall is the guy who used to live around Bishop Auckland way? If so for old time's sake you could always have a listen to my version at http://www.whitclifferecords.co.uk/#/leapyearcd/4523136646 Its the bottom track on the player thing, scroll down and click the track. I heard it from Dick Gaughan. Hope all's well. John Wilson |
Subject: RE: Raglan Road - Recorded versions From: GUEST,mg Date: 17 Mar 08 - 10:22 PM Maybe someone already said but I heard a very nice version I believe in Dutch today on a new Salt??? radio on live 365.com Very great music. mg |
Subject: RE: Raglan Road - Recorded versions From: emjay Date: 17 Mar 08 - 10:30 PM Only one person mentioned the Men of Worth version -- if you have a chance to hear it, do. Uncomplicated and beautiful. |
Subject: RE: Raglan Road - Recorded versions From: Colin Randall Date: 18 Mar 08 - 02:23 AM John Wilson: excellent to be reacquainted via Mudcat. I am the CR you assumed me to be , though I long ago abandoned Shildon & Bishop Auckland for London, then France and now Abu Dhabi. I look forward to hearing your version of Raglan Road and had a quick try this morning, but could coax only the tinniest of sound from my laptop Mac. Will have another go later, with earphones if necessary.....in the meantime, John, you'd find a few harkbacks to Bishop days at Salut! Live |
Subject: RE: Raglan Road - Recorded versions From: Arkie Date: 18 Mar 08 - 02:21 PM Can't say I would put Big George and the Business' version in the top ten or top 40 but it is out there and unlike any other version I have heard. |
Subject: RE: Raglan Road - Recorded versions From: GUEST,Tunesmith Date: 18 Mar 08 - 04:51 PM Here's a link to the Pete Rowan version on Youtube. Raglan Road - Pete Rowan |
Subject: RE: Raglan Road - Recorded versions From: JHW Date: 06 Apr 08 - 12:37 PM Colin Randall - I had a look at Salut but was overwhelmed and moved on but on another try up came a bit, from where I don't know, about your first booked performance and the era of paying Vin £3 door money! Cheers, John Wilson |
Subject: RE: Raglan Road - Recorded versions From: michaelr Date: 06 Apr 08 - 01:12 PM I'll probably be crucified for this, but I don't see what all the Luke Kelly fuss is about. His voice is not pretty, his intonation dubious, and the banjo accompaniment superfluous. I think Joan Osborne's version is the best I've heard. Cheers, Michael |
Subject: RE: Raglan Road - Recorded versions From: GUEST,2mimi Date: 03 Nov 09 - 11:00 PM Became obsessed with this song after first hearing Joan Osborne's version. Then Sinead, then Lorena, then Luke and on and on.... The wonder is that one wee song can give forth such power, possibiltiy for interpretation and depth of emotions in such a disparate array of singers. It is a great song that stands alone and virtually any recording brings the essence of the artist to it... What more can we ask for in a piece of music? |
Subject: RE: Raglan Road - Recorded versions From: Smokey. Date: 03 Nov 09 - 11:23 PM Unlike most people Dick Gaughan actually bothered to sing what Kavanagh wrote, so he gets my vote.. I love the way the Chieftains and Van Morrison did it, but he makes a complete balls of verse three.. mind you, I'm not going to tell him.. |
Subject: RE: Raglan Road - Recorded versions From: GUEST,Hans Lap Date: 02 Jan 10 - 06:04 PM The Dutch version of this great song is by Rowwen Heze. It's called......November. Look on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFqv6O8onkE |
Subject: RE: Raglan Road - Recorded versions From: GUEST,Graham Pallot Date: 03 Feb 10 - 03:59 PM I first heard Luke sing this in August 1969 at the Cambridge Folk Festival. It brought a stunned silence to a slightly boisterous audience - such was the power and passion of Luke. A few years later he sung it to a large and even more boisterous stident audience at the Univeristy of Aston in Birmingham, with a similar effect. No one else comes near to this - and I have asked for it to be played at my funeral !!!!! There is a DVD of live Luke Kelly performances, and he sings it on that. And to answer someone else's enquiry from years back, the late Dave Phillips never recorded it, but his is a tremendous version learned from Luke (his best friend during his Birmingham days). Luke learned many of his songs from Dave - including Peggy Gordon. |
Subject: RE: Raglan Road - Recorded versions From: MARINER Date: 03 Feb 10 - 06:53 PM The Luke Kelly version is the best followed closely by the version of a man he gave the song to, Al O'Donnell. It can be heard on the excellent double cd, "Ramble Away".A recording that should be in everyone's collection. |
Subject: RE: Raglan Road - Recorded versions From: GUEST,Graham Pallot Date: 13 Apr 10 - 10:18 AM Anyone who has seen the recording of Luke singing the song on an RTE programme about Kavanagh (and included on the DVD of Luke's performances) will see that the guitar accompanist is Al O'Donnell |
Subject: RE: Raglan Road - Recorded versions From: MARINER Date: 13 Apr 10 - 04:34 PM 'Tis indeed , I forgot to mention that .There are also some well known literary and folk people in the audience too, eg, Benedict Kiely, Ciarán McMathuna etc. If my memory is not letting me down . |
Subject: RE: Raglan Road - Recorded versions From: bruceCMR Date: 13 Apr 10 - 06:27 PM I've just checked our audio library here at Celtic Music Radio. We've got 4 versions of Raglan Road, by: Arthur Johnstone Donnie Munro Ciaran Dorris The Baileys 4 very different versions. Bruce http://www.celticmusicradio.net/ |
Subject: RE: Raglan Road - Recorded versions From: GUEST,Erich Date: 14 Apr 10 - 03:53 AM In my opinion the best version is by Luke Kelly, closely followed by Dick Gaughans. Just to mention, there are more versions by Cockersdale,Mark Knopfler, Jim McCann, Paddy Reilly, Whaley/Fletcher. |
Subject: RE: Raglan Road - Recorded versions From: GUEST,Guest::- CAP Date: 14 Apr 10 - 04:18 AM The late John Wright has a lovely version on his album A Few Short Lines. |
Subject: RE: Raglan Road - Recorded versions From: BobKnight Date: 14 Apr 10 - 04:45 AM Being relatively new to the folk scene I didn't come with any preconceived ideas, so for what it's worth... It may be heresy to some, but I can't see what all the fuss about Luke Kelly's version is either. All those long gaps between half lines and an irritating banjo drilling away in the background - not my cup of tea. Unfortunately most other people singing it have copied Luke with the long gaps. Best version by a mile for me is Mary Black's - a real singers version. |
Subject: RE: Raglan Road - Recorded versions From: buddhuu Date: 14 Apr 10 - 05:35 AM I even like Ronnie Drew's version. I saw Ronnie do this a few times, and on a good night, even with that crushed-coke voice, he could get real emotion into it. I don't know if that was down to the song or to its strong association with Luke... For those who aren't impressed by Luke's version (which I also love), and who may not be familiar with his other work, may I suggest that they listen to, amongst others, his recordings of: * Jail Of Cluain Meala (sp?) * Wild Mountain Thyme (with Dave Philips) * Unquiet Grave * Song for Ireland If there's not something there to give you a quick shiver then I respectfully suggest that you visit your quack and get your pulse checked... |
Subject: RE: Raglan Road - Recorded versions From: Dave Hanson Date: 15 Apr 10 - 04:28 AM Or even listen to Luke reciting his poem ' For What Died The Sons Of Roisin ' His passion, honesty and sincerity shone out in everything he did. Dave H |
Subject: RE: Raglan Road - Recorded versions From: Gillie Date: 15 Apr 10 - 04:39 AM Pete Wray did an excellant version of this song. He used to sing with John Burge based in the North Yorkshire area. Anyone remember them? |
Subject: RE: Raglan Road - Recorded versions From: buddhuu Date: 15 Apr 10 - 05:17 AM @ Dave H: Yeh. I saw the Dubs again a couple of weeks back. They're doing one of their periodic retrospective tours just now, as they have taken to doing in recent years. As well as the live playing, they play a few audio and video snippets from the days when Ronnie, Ciaran, Luke and Bobby were still with us. One such clip was Luke's "Sons of Roisin". I've not seen an audience so respectfully entranced by a recorded clip before. I think John said the lads have been at it for nigh on 50 years now, and they're not retiring yet. As Barney says, "It's too late to stop now..." |

Subject: RE: Raglan Road - Recorded versions From: Dave Illingworth Date: 08 Nov 10 - 04:28 PM I have been away from the Cafe, so just catching up. I must have missed this thread. Firstly belated thanks to guest "T-boy" (way back on 21st October 2004) for saying nice things about our Pigfoot version. We have in fact recently re-recorded it wit ha fine fiddler called Frank Bradley. With a bit of luck the CD might be out by Christmas - it is our first recording for 20 years. Best version I have heard is by Patrick Kavanagh, although I don't think it is on a record. It was part of a TV programme about Kavanagh, Behan and other Dublin writers and the pubs they frequented. A magic sequence of Kavanagh singing the song (unaccompanied) in a pub. Forget title of programme (it was some years ago) - but it was introduced by,,,,, Van Morrison |
Subject: RE: Raglan Road - Recorded versions From: GUEST,Alan Whittle Date: 08 Nov 10 - 04:45 PM John Maclaughlin's terrific essay about Kavanagh and showing some photographs and details of the song are to be found on this page of my website. Kavanagh deserves his own website with all the bells and whistles, but I'm not clever with computers - and I passionately felt the essay needed to be published. http://www.bigalwhittle.co.uk/id29.html |
Subject: RE: Raglan Road - Recorded versions From: GUEST,Alan Whittle Date: 08 Nov 10 - 04:56 PM If you do read my page with MacLaughlin's essay on it. Please skipmy version of the song which is on video there. It is a deeply personal version of the song and I don't need it explaining to me that I don't have an authentic folk voice. |
Subject: RE: Raglan Road - Recorded versions From: GUEST,mg Date: 08 Nov 10 - 04:58 PM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LvC5nMyYZaM click Here is a lovely young lady singing it..I have posted about her before..from Northern Ireland..now in USA I think. Just a nice voice, very good guitar I think..a very natural talent who obviously loves the music..I hope she can be kept from the Keltic Woman Syndrome, as in singing like a teenager past the normal pull date..but now she sings like a teen, which is appropriate. mg |
