His name was Dermot Somerville (of the bands Shanua and The Bodhran Brothers) and he proceeded to sing an unbelievably gorgeous version of "Raglan Road", which I somehow had got to the age of 32 without ever hearing before. I'm not ashamed to admit I had tears streaming down my face throughout the song (though to be fair, I'd just played the harp at the passing of a friend's wife a few days before, so was a little susceptible). I really recommend that everyone check out Dermot's version, which is on Shanua's album "The Butterfly Effect". |

I fear Cleveland is something of a barrens as regards folk music, not to mention a good way from me in eastern NY state, and I haven't been out that way for a while. But I'm very glad Dermot is singing still, and singing well. He is the man. |

One man's meat and all that, I suppose. While I have enjoyed Raglan Road sung by Sinead O'Connor, Joan Osborne and others, I have never heard Eddie Walker's version and cannot wait to see how wonderful or disastrous (essentially the two views we see on this thread) it is. Cannot someone film him singing it and stick it on Youtube? |

The wonder is that one wee song can give forth such power, possibiltiy for interpretation and depth of emotions in such a disparate array of singers. It is a great song that stands alone and virtually any recording brings the essence of the artist to it... What more can we ask for in a piece of music? |

It brought a stunned silence to a slightly boisterous audience - such was the power and passion of Luke. A few years later he sung it to a large and even more boisterous stident audience at the Univeristy of Aston in Birmingham, with a similar effect. No one else comes near to this - and I have asked for it to be played at my funeral !!!!! There is a DVD of live Luke Kelly performances, and he sings it on that. And to answer someone else's enquiry from years back, the late Dave Phillips never recorded it, but his is a tremendous version learned from Luke (his best friend during his Birmingham days). Luke learned many of his songs from Dave - including Peggy Gordon. |

It may be heresy to some, but I can't see what all the fuss about Luke Kelly's version is either. All those long gaps between half lines and an irritating banjo drilling away in the background - not my cup of tea. Unfortunately most other people singing it have copied Luke with the long gaps. Best version by a mile for me is Mary Black's - a real singers version. |

I saw Ronnie do this a few times, and on a good night, even with that crushed-coke voice, he could get real emotion into it. I don't know if that was down to the song or to its strong association with Luke... For those who aren't impressed by Luke's version (which I also love), and who may not be familiar with his other work, may I suggest that they listen to, amongst others, his recordings of: * Jail Of Cluain Meala (sp?) * Wild Mountain Thyme (with Dave Philips) * Unquiet Grave * Song for Ireland If there's not something there to give you a quick shiver then I respectfully suggest that you visit your quack and get your pulse checked... |

They're doing one of their periodic retrospective tours just now, as they have taken to doing in recent years. As well as the live playing, they play a few audio and video snippets from the days when Ronnie, Ciaran, Luke and Bobby were still with us. One such clip was Luke's "Sons of Roisin". I've not seen an audience so respectfully entranced by a recorded clip before. I think John said the lads have been at it for nigh on 50 years now, and they're not retiring yet. Firstly belated thanks to guest "T-boy" (way back on 21st October 2004) for saying nice things about our Pigfoot version. We have in fact recently re-recorded it wit ha fine fiddler called Frank Bradley. With a bit of luck the CD might be out by Christmas - it is our first recording for 20 years. Best version I have heard is by Patrick Kavanagh, although I don't think it is on a record. It was part of a TV programme about Kavanagh, Behan and other Dublin writers and the pubs they frequented. A magic sequence of Kavanagh singing the song (unaccompanied) in a pub. Forget title of programme (it was some years ago) - but it was introduced by,,,,, Van Morrison |
