Subject: RE: Balboa Park, San Diego! From: Amos Date: 14 Sep 03 - 10:18 PM Well we had a smashing wee hoot for ourselves this Sunday for a few hours, with brave Banjoest holding forth on the five-string, Mike on the mandolin, Darrell playing and singing guitar...I mean playing guitar and singing, and Mark showing up to play fine fiddle to boot. Good time was had by all and the crowd was very happy! Next session (since it is now after Labor Day) will include Nicole Castle of all people!! Won't that be a right treat!!! Thanks for a wonderful day, guys!!! A |
Subject: RE: Balboa Park, San Diego! From: NicoleC Date: 14 Sep 03 - 11:23 PM Oh yeah. Bring yer earplugs :) |

Subject: RE: Balboa Park, San Diego! From: wysiwyg Date: 15 Aug 05 - 10:43 PM So are you reprobates still meeting to jam? I met a worthy soul at another board. He's reputed to be in your area. That would be Russ, of the Kahuna Cowboys Jugband. I've heard a coiple of songs. How can you go wrong, with stuff like this?
I think you'll have a great time if you invite him-- say hi for me; he'll be lookin' for you. ~Susan |

Subject: RE: Balboa Park, San Diego! From: Amos Date: 15 Aug 05 - 10:50 PM Wal, truth be tole ole Banjoest quit beating on the summonsing gong as much as oncet he did. So we haven't had a good jam this summer except mebbe one I missed. But he hasn';t resigned as the wheel-turner so mebbe this will draw him out, huh?? A |
Subject: RE: Balboa Park, San Diego! From: wysiwyg Date: 15 Aug 05 - 10:52 PM If the music has died, or even gone into a coma, then the Kahuna Cowboys should get 'er done and wake yo' sorry asses up. "Spending time with the Kahuna Cowboys was once described as basking in the sun on a tropical isle, listening to the gentle rhythms of Hawaiian steel guitars and having Gene Autry gallop by, chasing a herd of Texas longhorns." Trust me, you can NOT go wrong, even if my HTML sucks. ~Susan |

Subject: RE: Balboa Park, San Diego! From: Amos Date: 15 Aug 05 - 11:47 PM How curious that these outer-space characters think they know what the story has been. The truth is, the thread died and the music kept getting stronger and stronger, until a few months back. Dunno what changed; Banjoest would have to speak to that. A |
Subject: RE: Balboa Park, San Diego! From: Wilfried Schaum Date: 16 Aug 05 - 04:09 AM Glory, how I'd like to be there - bur it's too far away. And if you're there in this wonderful park, don't miss the model train exposition in a pause! |
Subject: RE: Balboa Park, San Diego! From: Bill D Date: 16 Aug 05 - 07:01 PM durn...I walked thru Balboa park once, and I didn't hear you. That was about...ummmmm.....August, 1952. (from a street at the top of the hill overlooking the water/fleet, all the way to the zoo.) |
Subject: RE: Balboa Park, San Diego! From: Amos Date: 16 Aug 05 - 07:28 PM I wasn't there, Bill. I was in WIlton, being 6. A |

Subject: RE: Balboa Park, San Diego! From: Louie Roy Date: 17 Aug 05 - 10:39 AM Amos I can't be there but I spent many happy hours in Balboa Park with friends in 1945 when I was stationed there on the signal tower at the foot of Broadway.I even wrote a song about Balboa Park in 1945.Have fun Louie Roy |
Subject: RE: Balboa Park, San Diego! From: Kaleea Date: 18 Aug 05 - 07:25 AM Amos, I should actually be there by then! I'm leaving next week to drive out. Because of limited room in my old Pontiac, I had to store some things, including my ukeleles, but I'm bringing my celtic harp, autoharp, mando, whistles & Bodhran. Now if I just had a nice roadie . . . See you there! |
Subject: RE: Balboa Park, San Diego! From: Amos Date: 18 Aug 05 - 07:46 AM Kaleea, Let me know when you're gonna be in town and we'll grab the next opportunity to get together. Amos |
Subject: RE: Balboa Park, San Diego! From: wysiwyg Date: 18 Aug 05 - 05:59 PM Well, don't forget to email them Kahuna Cowboys and round 'em up. ~S~ |
Subject: RE: Balboa Park, San Diego! From: Bill D Date: 18 Aug 05 - 11:50 PM !! I actually remember one song that was popular then (1952), since this girl I was walking with knew it..."Nature Boy"!! "There was a boy...a very strange enchanted boy..." wow...the stuff that sticks in a memory. |
Subject: RE: Balboa Park, San Diego! From: PoppaGator Date: 19 Aug 05 - 12:22 PM In 1952, that was probably Nat "King" Cole's recording of "Nature Boy" ~ right? Great song; Aaron Neville cut a nice version fairly recently. |

Dunno what changed; Banjoest would have to speak to that." -- Of course, you bein' out of town when I was there in June didn't help, and Hugh bein' tied up with his nephew's graduation did didn't either. ;-D Bear and Greg and I hadda hold down the Balboa fort all by ourse'fs! Ennyhoo, my latest email from Hugh says we all is jammin' on Sept. 11th (whilst Rummy & the gang will be using taxpayer $ to promote a pep rally in Washington DC once again trying to use the memory of 9-11-01 to build support for a war that had nothing to do with Al Quaeda but I digress). Sept. 11, of course, is on Sunday this year. Sept. 14th. is a Wednesday. So I do hope y'all can make it on the 11th, since that's the only Sunday I'll be in SD till the end of October. (As I told Hugh, I can't get there on the 11th till about 1:30, but I can stay all afternoon, so if anyone else wants to jam from 1 to 4 instead of 12 to 3, I'm up for that!) I hope we can get a good sized group up for the Sept! Genie |

Sure, they're helpful as caddies, but Balboa Park doesn't allow them newfangled electric bodhrans an' the like, so ya won't need anyone to wind no cords and tote no amps. §;-D Hope ya can make it! Subject: RE: Balboa Park, San Diego! From: X Date: 19 Aug 05 - 07:26 PM Boy, can't a banjo picker get any sleep? Ok...This is what's cooking. Maybe we can get something going on Aug. 28th and on Sept. 11. Both Sundays starting at 12:00 noon. Genie, I know you'll be late for the 9-11 date but we can always pick longer. What do you all think? Hugh |
Subject: RE: Balboa Park, San Diego! From: Amos Date: 19 Aug 05 - 08:05 PM Right there! Remind to get some new strings for the occasion! A |
Subject: RE: Balboa Park, San Diego! From: X Date: 19 Aug 05 - 09:36 PM Don't for get them new strings...Maybe some extra ones for that 2nd string you like to break. ;o) |
Subject: RE: Balboa Park, San Diego! From: Genie Date: 22 Aug 05 - 12:07 PM Second string? I thought it was his G string that was always breaking. (Too much strain, y'know.) |
Subject: RE: Balboa Park, San Diego! From: Amos Date: 22 Aug 05 - 01:23 PM I don't use one, but I may borrow yours if you permit it.... just for grins! A |
Subject: RE: Balboa Park, San Diego! From: X Date: 22 Aug 05 - 01:27 PM Amos...You can borrow one of my "G" strings. The only trouble is, is that mine are loop end and I know you like ball end. ;o) |
Subject: RE: Balboa Park, San Diego! From: Genie Date: 22 Aug 05 - 11:57 PM Well, I normally carry a spare G string or two, just in case someone breaks one during a jam. That can be really disruptive, y'know. |
Subject: RE: Balboa Park, San Diego! From: Amos Date: 23 Aug 05 - 01:28 AM Well, be sure and show up with 'em on, duck -- I am sure we can improvise some appropriate music. A |
Subject: RE: Balboa Park, San Diego! From: Genie Date: 23 Aug 05 - 09:40 PM Isn't there a piece called "Air On A G String?" I forget whose it is. Ennyhoo, one will be on my git-fiddle and 'tuthers in the gig back, in case of emergency. ;-D |
Subject: RE: Balboa Park, San Diego! From: Genie Date: 29 Aug 05 - 08:44 PM Hope youse guys had a great jam yestiddy! See y'all in 2 weeks -- Sept. 11, 2005 (Sunday)! Genie |

As MC Members you can do the chatty-thing, out of public view....most of our Wiccans and Morris Dancers have chosen to not aire their laundry....
Don't break an arm reaching for that "pat on the back."

Don't get me wrong - keep Balboa going, and going - but space the sanguininity over a month the sweetness is stronger than honey. |

Subject: RE: Balboa Park, San Diego! From: GUEST,The Banjoest Date: 31 Aug 05 - 03:22 PM Genie, I'm sure Mike and his new bride stayed at one of the fine San Diego "No-Tell Motels" and enjoyed the park by day. Louie Roy, I have a friend who was in the USMC during WWII. He was in Japan on 12/07/41 and was held there till the end of the war. When he got back home he was hospitalized in the Museum Of Natural History in Balboa Park. When he regained his health he ate a boat load of hamburgers and was given the nick-name of "Wimpy." He became the chef at the "Cotton Patch" on Rosecrans St. San Diego and worked there for years untill it closed. At this time he's alive and well. You being there in 1945 I thought you might get a little kick out of that story. |
