Subject: Tom Paley in Chorlton ManchesterUK From: GUEST,Les in Chorlton Date: 22 Aug 03 - 02:02 PM Did anybody else see Tom Paley in Chorlton on Thursday Night? What a gem, what a delight. Fascinating songs, great tunes, guitar, banjo and fiddle and great chat. Excellent short spots from Sean, Mags(?) and brilliant poems from a bard of Chorlton, Copeland Smith and even Jozeph sang. Lots more good things on further Thursdays at Chorlton Folk Club, South West Manchester Cricket Club, Ellesmere Road, off Wilbraham Road, Chorlton (cum Hardy) Manchester. Also one of the prettiest villages in England! |

Subject: RE: Tom Paley in Chorlton UK From: Billy the Bus Date: 23 Aug 03 - 10:07 PM G'day Les, Great to hear that Tom Paley is still performing. I wish I'd been with you. NLCRs were my "US Country Music Icons" in the 50-60s. I think I have most of their Folklways albums. Mike Seeger is the only one of the team I ever heard 'in the flesh', and met - great guy. Memories........ Cheers - Sam in NZ |
Subject: RE: Tom Paley in Chorlton UK From: GUEST,Les in Chorlton, Manchester Date: 24 Aug 03 - 04:22 AM I saw Pete Seeger once, a million years ago at the Phil in Liverpool with The Spinners. They have a lot of musical tradition in common and I really enjoyed the way the both connected the American songs with earlier English origins. Tom played great tunes, including some Swedish fiddle tunes and song a couple in Swedish. Always something to make you sit up and sometimes jump with surprise. Somthing that is always possible with traditional music but great to get such a lot in one night! |
