Subject: BS: He's Worse than Shatner
From: TheBigPinkLad

I watched an episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent last night. Appalling. Detective Goren (Vincent D'Onofrio) iss the acting equivalent of a cloth-eared singer or that bloke with the heavy left hand who plays the piano in the pub on Friday nights. Actually, those people are just not very good, this guy is much worse, he has no talent whatsoever, makes Shatner look like Sir Laurence Olivier.

Ever see Vanna White playing Venus in "A Touch Of Venus"? Painful, positively painful. Shatner isn't the worst...but don't tell Little Hawk.

Heh, I've never heard anyone express such a strong negative opinion of Vincent D'Onofrio. Anyways, you're totally fucking wrong, and D'Onofrio rules. See him in any movie he's in--- even the shitty ones. :)

Hmmmm...well, it's nice to see you have emerged from your rabbithole, Lepus, I was wondering where you'd been. I am completely ignorant of Mr D'Onofrio, but I doubt that he can rival Shatner.

I would have to say that Glen Campbell's portrayal in "True Grit" is the ikon of bad acting. Fortunately (and wisely,) he made a second effort so far as I know.

Allan C - actually Glen Campbell made a second movie, with the same gal from "True Grit" - Kim whatshername - The movie is called "Norwood", it got lousy reviews. I've never seen it and don't plan to. I agree that his acting was downright awful. I'm surprised that no one noticed while they were filming.

I like D'Onofrio, he makes Law and Order more interesting. He also did a good job playing Orson Welles in "Ed Wood".

I vote for Sarah Jessica Parker. I once read that she was "a one-woman agent orange in any film unfortunate enough to have her in it." I have to agree.

I first saw Vince in a "Homocide" episode where he played the victum of a subway accident. Caught between the train and track his emmy winning performance dipicted the hour leading up to the character's certain death. The second time I noticed him was as "Edgar Bug" in "Men in Black" NO ONE combines humour with menace like Vinnie D.!

Carol and I used to think that his performance as detective Goren was hammy overacting. But having the watched the show many times we now realize that his character is supposed to have some sort of compulsive disorder which makes him behave that way and also makes him a great detective. His detailed understanding of abnormal psychology is based upon personal experience. If you watch the show with the appreciation that this guy was perhaps just a bad decision or two away from being one of the sociopaths he hunts, then you might enjoy his acting a lot more. Carol still doesn't like that his partner, a woman, isn't protrayed as being very clever, and never gets the good lines. To me his partner sounds a lot more like real cop than he does.

Detective Goren is a wonderful, larger than life character, with lots of grit and substance. Vincent D'Onofrio is one of the few actors
with the brains and intensity to play such a role.

If you like his character on Criminal intent, you'll like this movie
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/HappyAccidents-1109575/

He is also brilliant as the serial killer in "The Cell.

Interesting, Jack. Sounds like D'Onofrio is beginning to approach the level of acting brilliance that William Shatner has had almost entirely to himself for the past few decades. I will have to look into this further, maybe even force myself to watch a little TV...

D'Onofrio may actually be hammier than W.S. the difference is that V.D. chooses roles where "emoting" is appropriate. Shatner just takes every single job he can get. I like that about Shatner. Have you seen the Brad Paisley video yet?

I liked him as the Hick turned insectivorous alien in Men In Black.
He's a bit of a local kid to me so I try to catch him. Every thing I've seen him in was fine but I've never seen Law and Order so I can't say much of his TV skills. I agree about Glenn Campbell and Sarah JP.

But what about non actors who were the best there ever was at what they did in the movies? Like Ben Johnson and Richard Farnsworth.
No matter what they did they made the roles believeable.

Marty Robbins made a few movies. There was one where he was himself, the singer, and also a stock car racer, but one too virtuous to moonlight as a bootlegger...unlike his envious brother...oh yeah, this is a pretty bad movie. And he was a fine songwriter and singer, but not an actor period.

I have a bit of a jones for Samantha Mathis. My bias makes it hard for me to decide whether she can act or if she just has great cheekbones and a talent for disgustedly reaming out her male co-star at the appropriate moment. One thing's for sure, when they made her the star of a movie cleverly titled "The Thing Called Love", about trying to make it in Nashville, the casting experts should instead have picked someone who

  1. could sing
  2. could play guitar half-decent
  3. maybe, could dance...
  4. seemed the slightest bit like someone who would like country music

Oh well...

I can't stand CI. I love the original Law & Order and, although I didn't at first, I mostly like Special Victims Unit (I don't like Christopher Meloni's character, but I was a big Munch fan from the character's days in "Homicide"). But I think CI is a fantasy of a "superhuman", never mind abusive and possibly above-the-law, cop. Since I'm not into fantasy TV, I find this very annoying.

No, I don't think Vincent D'Onofrio is very good, at least not in CI, and yes, I've seen more than one episode. I've seen worse acting and worse casting, but I wouldn't give him any awards (or pay him what he's probably making). Just my opinion.

This is threadcreep, I know, but it hurts my soul that 2 great books, True Grit and, especially, Norwood, should only be known by Glen Campbell's rotten acting. They were both written by Charles Portis, a total original, an Arkansas son of the south, with a brilliant ear for dialog and a penchant for quirky, irresistible characters.

Since I don't get network TV I've not seen the show in question...but I did love V d'O as the hick turned tick...

Vincent D'Onofrio was great in "Full metal jacket" and in every other movie where I saw him.... but I don't like him as a cop . It's not his role. The phsycopatic killer is. ( Like in "The cell")

All of "Law and Order" is fantasy. It takes more than 44 minutes to go from crime to post sentencing coments. :)

The regular show is supposed to be a gritty crime drama.
CI is a detective show in the mold of Columbo.

I like it. Your results may vary.

Speaking of Columbo, now there's bad acting at a pretty impressive level! There was a Columbo episode where Shatner played the criminal too, being harassed and hounded by Peter Falk. It's a collector's gem. Then there's Ricardo Montalban! That guy can do an imitation of himself that is so true to form that it's indelible. Not even John Wayne was better at playing himself than Ricardo is. Then there's Chuck Norris...Ha! Ha! Ha! Ooooo...and Steven Seagall...such a range of emoting that man possesses...I once suffered through almost 2 hours of him massacring Rastafarians in hideous ways. I kept hoping they would kill him and end the movie. No such luck. Talk about a waste of 2 hours!

Yeah, Columbo had the same KIND of bad acting that Shatner excels at: they're always on the verge of winking at the audience and saying "you like that one?" It's very different from somber or intense overacting a la D'Onofrio, or from non-acting a la Chuck Norris, Steven Segal, etc. Actually, Shatner in T.J. Hooker was often somber/intense too, so I guess he's a master at all the subtle arts of bad acting.

Here's a review that pretty much sums up, much more succinctly, all of the discussion Carol and I have had about the show. I can't wait to see hao the characters develop next year.

He might be worse than Shatner (or maybe not), but he does grow on you. I didn't like him at all when I first saw him, but I enjoy watching him in that show now. The one I'm having difficulty with these days is the female cop. I think the writers of that show are purposely trying to make that character look stupid.

I think he's sexy as hell and a genius! I love him in CI and enjoy his character and I love the way his character tries to get inside of the people involved in the episode. I don't think it's just good writing. I think it's him that pulls it off. Awesome! I loved him in Men in Black, which I just discovered was him last week when I watched it again for fun. Just my opinion.

Okay, I've got one - Jackie Chan. Now don't get me wrong, I certainly did get a kick out of a couple of things Jackie did in the late 1990's, and he's one helluva human being and all that, even if he isn't Canadian, but I do believe he could compete with the Shatman for least credible portrayal of an actor in a motion picture, and here's the kicker -

about a year ago I was in a music store browsing through the listening selection when I came upon something so horrid, so heinous, words can barely describe - it was Jackie Chan singing Sinatra - at least I think it was Sinatra, I'm not sure, I might have blacked out for a few moments, but I just remember it as very traumatic - I had to go to the coffee bar and sip a decaf latte for awhile 'til the shuddering stopped -

did Shatner ever have a cartoon series for kids starring himself? 'Cause Jackie did.

I used to hate crossroads then one day I worked as an extra on a couple of episodes - they used to do two episodes at a time in Birmingham.

The actors were really impressive. There was this bloke who used to have a foreign accent who was some sort of manager in the hotel - I dunno , I never watched - apart from the time I was on of course.

Anyway, this guy with a clipboard ran in and said - we were watching that (obviously from a control room). We'll lose that scene and she can leave him next week. So the scriptwriters got to work, all the xtras went off for a coffee and less than an hour later, they shot another scene with totally new speeches.

I always hated being an extra, but it made me look at soap actors with renewed respect. they are very disciplined.

There are really any number of actors who are worse than Shatner. The thing about Shatner is, he's unique. No one else can really be William Shatner (although many want to be...). In that sense he is...peerless.

As I mentioned in another thread, Shatner has found new life on the tube as a partner of a Boston law firm in 'Boston Legal'. He's portrayed as flirting with sanity but no ego problems. And the unique James Spader to work with.

As for Vincent D'Onofrio, he's one of the best American actors out there, I make a point of seeing stuff just 'cause he's in it. His Pyle in 'Full Metal Jacket' is unforgettable.
