Subject: RE: Ae fond kiss - recordings From: Zany Mouse Date: 29 Aug 03 - 04:07 PM I THINK Moira Craig recorded it for Pastimes. I'm sure some of the Maidenhead Catters can confirm. ZM |

Subject: RE: Ae fond kiss - recordings From: Jim McLean Date: 29 Aug 03 - 05:02 PM There must be a Kenneth McKellar recording out there somewhere. He is not classed as a 'folkie' but had the sweetest Scottish tenor voice. His singing of Burns, at his best, is unsurpassable. |

Subject: RE: Ae fond kiss - recordings From: s&r Date: 29 Aug 03 - 08:02 PM Brian Osborne's version is beautiful. Hard to find I guess |
Subject: RE: Ae fond kiss - recordings From: Bernard Date: 29 Aug 03 - 08:36 PM I've got Brian's album (vinyl) of the same name - the song is on it. Bought it from Brian in person when he played at the club I ran in the mid 80s. If anyone wants the MP3, I'll rip it for you. I'm sure Brian wouldn't have minded had he still been with us... :o( |
Subject: RE: Ae fond kiss - recordings From: wysiwyg Date: 29 Aug 03 - 10:18 PM Seamus, no question. Don't even wanna hear another version... heck, I never even HUM it-- that way it's perfect in my memory every time. (Just kidding of COURSE I sing it, but no one can sing it like Seamus.) ~S~ |

Subject: RE: Ae fond kiss - recordings From: michaelr Date: 30 Aug 03 - 12:29 AM One of my favorite singers, Eddi Reader, just released "Ae Fond Kiss" as the title track of her new album of Burns songs. Eddi is from Glasgow, so she has the authentic sound as well as a gorgeous voice. You can hear a short clip here. (From her website) "Eddi says she has discovered in Burns something she believes has been overlooked in the approach to his work, and she believes that her interpretations of his poetry will reach more ears than have previously heard him." Being quite well known as a pop singer, she may well be right. Cheers, Michael |
Subject: RE: Ae fond kiss - recordings From: Stewie Date: 30 Aug 03 - 04:56 AM I didn't suggest it earlier because the record is probably long gone, but the performance that make the hair stand on my neck is Bobby Eaglesham's on Five Hand Reel 'For A' That' album. --Stewie. |
Subject: RE: Ae fond kiss - recordings From: ard mhacha Date: 30 Aug 03 - 05:18 AM Jim McLean is right about Kenneth McKellar`singing of this lovely song, but within the past few weeks I bought Roisin O`Reilly`s new CD and she sings it to perfection, try it and listen,it can be had on Amazon. Subject: RE: Ae fond kiss - recordings From: Phil Cooper Date: 30 Aug 03 - 09:22 AM I agree with Stewie, Five Hand Reel's version really stands out. Margaret and I recorded a version a few years back as well. |
Subject: RE: Ae fond kiss - recordings From: ard mhacha Date: 30 Aug 03 - 01:01 PM Robert Burns wrote "Aye fond kiss" in 1791, during his stay in Edinburgh Burns met Mrs Agnes M`Lehose in December 1787. Both fell in love but , they had frequent meetings, but marriage was out of the question. The couple kept in touch by correspondence, they parted in December 1791, never to meet again. Burns so eloquently captures the heartache of the parting in his poem. Ard Mhacha. |

Subject: RE: Ae fond kiss - recordings From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 21 Jun 11 - 02:57 PM Thanks for bringing this song up. I've found two good tunes for it, and I'll use them when playing flute. One tune is right in the DT. For those of us not from Scotland or the North of England, 'ae' means 'one' and rhymes with 'stay.' |
Subject: RE: Ae fond kiss - recordings From: Jim McLean Date: 21 Jun 11 - 06:19 PM Burns wrote Ae Fond Kiss, not Aye, with ae rhyming with stay. |
Subject: RE: Ae fond kiss - recordings From: GUEST,Gerry Date: 22 Jun 11 - 01:34 AM There's a very nice recording by Gordon McIntyre and Kate Delaney on Pleasures to Find which, alas, has yet to make the jump from vinyl to CD. |
