Heard it at a concert recently, but all I remember is the first line: "A fond kiss and then we sever..." (or something like that). Does anyone have the complete lyrics?

AE FOND KISS is in the DT, lyrics and midi. Just enter fond kiss into the box for Lyrics and Knowledge search.
! Amazed that there is someone who doesn't know this Robert Burns song.

A link for you:    Ae Fond Kiss.

A great song. Enjoy!   (my favourite recording of it is by Dougie MacLean).

My favorite is Seamus Kennedy's recording and then Ronnie Brown's coming a very close, almost a tying, second.

Don

"Ae Fond Kiss" was sung by Gill Bowman at a Burns Supper (listen here).

Visit www.sky-web.net/taggartandwright/ and listen to Angie Wright singing it. She performed it at Lomond Festival when she was in concert with the Macalmans. Great festival great concert.
She is on at the Innerleithen Festival in a couple of weeks time and she will do it then. It is a competition to win support spot for Dougie Maclean. My money is on Angie to win it but then I am a bit biased.

This last one may be to a different tune. It's definitely different than the one that is in the DT.

Chords something like -

A C#m D F#m
D Bm E A
Bm D F#m D
A C#m D E A

with a violin solo and fourth verse a tone down

And "Ae" here doesn't really translate as "A", but rather as "One".

There are two tunes. Burns originally set it to Rory Dall's Port, but it was later set to Hi Oro 'S Na Horo Eile and seems usually to be sung to that tune nowadays; probably most people learn the song from records rather than books. More details in thread Haunted by a song (second half).

I don't think that the questioner intended a translation, but had just misunderstood the phrase; easily done in the circumstances.

Eddi Reader does a fine version on her CD "Sings the Songs of Robert Burns".

Remember it's ae as in capital A, not eye as someone I know was singing it! She was told by all assembled company how it should be pronounced.
Sorry, but am I the only person who doesn't go along with Eddi Reader's interpretations of Burns songs? Sure, she's a fine singer, but there's just a bit too much note-changing and ornamentation for my liking. I had a ticket to go and see her in Celtic Connections in Glasgow 2 Januarys ago but was then defeated by horrendous weather, but I've since heard several of her interpretations.
