The board is just starting (as from the 30th of August) so it maybe a little sparse of messages but if you keep visiting and posting your messages you will get a response and the page will get better and more messages will arive.

I have to agree with Seed. Our natural inclination is to "surf the net.." and to have several places we can go to find out and talk about folk music. But Mudcat is the best thing to happen to folksingers (and blues singers) since the capo.

Still and all, those who prefer "new" folk, like singer-songwriters, probably wouldn't feel all that comfortable here. I think there's room for more.

Hi,

I have no bad words to say about mudcat, I come her every week and I think it is brilliant!! That is why I decided to start up a buletin board just like it I was inspired!

I love the internet and anything to do with folk music on it so personally I think "the more the better" and if you check out the links on my main homepage you will notice that the first page I added when I made the page was mudcat.

I am very sorry if I have caused any bad feelings by starting this because it was not made to hurt anyone (or take custom away from mudcat) so if I have offended anyone in anyway I am very sorry

No Simon, you haven't hurt or offended anyone here as far as I can see. It's just the natural Mudcatter inclination to tell the world how wonderful we think this forum is. I'm sure there will be enough of us going to check out the new site to have some friendly interchanges. And, as Joe said, there are varieties of folk interests here and maybe some people will love the new site because it is just what they are looking for, and maybe it will become a regular port of call for lots more Mudcatters as well. We'll only know if we try it.

Simon, I just tried to have a look at the discussion board from the link you posted and also by backtracking to the main site address and from both directions I just end up with a blank page. Any idea what the problem is?

I get a blank page using Netscape at home, but it showed up fine at work using Explorer. Maybe it's Netscape?

Hi, Simon - I just tried your site with both Netscape and MS Internet Explorer (MSIE). It works find with MSIE, but not with Netscape. It looks like it will be really nice, once you get a little community built up. One thing, though - my eyes get tired when I look at sites that are mostly black. I know it became the style a year or so ago when everybody made their sites black to promote Internet freedom of speech - but that fight is won now. Best of luck to you.

Well, Simon, I got there on Netscape, but the light colored tiny type on the dark background hurt my eyes so much that I only stayed for a few seconds. We baby-boomers have old eyes, which means eye strain is a constant problem. Gee, we sure are giving you a full critique, aren't we? A larger point size and dark color for type and a white or light-colored background would keep me there long enough to communicate.

The black background doesn't bother me. The small fonts don't bother me. But a whole lotta great ideas need a core group of regulars to make them work. Ever tried starting a songcircle without at least two or three people solidly committed to the project. Kinda tough.

A Modest Proposal

If you're setting up a site that duplicates the function of another site, you only fragment your visitor base. A successful site, I think , addresses some aspect of the broad subject that isn't already covered by an existing site. Singer/Songwriters, Performers, Record reviews, Instrumental music...these are all subjects that the Mudcat does not cover extensively. I'm sure that there are many others.

Ah...rats. The bi-furcated message you've cleaned up to post your new one was so much more fun to read :-)

But anyway, I agree with ya, Dick. And to Simon: if you want a good discussion, you need people, and to attract people, you probably have to offer more than just a board. Most people came to Mudcat for the database. Is there something you can put on your site to attract folkies? Information on midi setup? On music software, shareware, and freeware? Recommended albums? A specialized collection of links? Concert schedules? In general, resources for folkies are more attractive than a bare board.

This site specialises in local English Folk including the ONLY site about the up and coming (this weekend) Fylde Folk Festival. This is the main Folk Festival in the UK in Lancashire and surrounding areas and people come to perform and join in from miles around. Including special guests from USA, Australia and many other places.
