Subject: RE: Jones's Ale in Chester From: Les in Chorlton Date: 15 Sep 03 - 12:28 PM Thanks Joan that was brilliant. Does Jones's Ale still exist as a singaround? Does anybody know how the Mummers are related to the original singaround? |
Subject: RE: Jones's Ale in Chester From: Mr Happy Date: 16 Sep 03 - 03:11 AM Les, No J's Ale extinct, but there's been nostalgic get-togethers/reunions of it over the years, mainly organised by long standing icons of the Chester folk scene from the early 70's. John Finnan, Nidge,Phil Stafford & Dave Jenkins. Dave Jenkins is still active in Chester Morris Men & also sings & plays concertina at several sessions in the area. |
Subject: RE: Jones's Ale in Chester From: Les in Chorlton Date: 16 Sep 03 - 11:43 AM Thanks Mr Happy. Are the sessions you mention tune sessions? Perhaps they are more longlasting, although I notice Frodsham is still going and must have been in, (is it the Queen's Head Yard?) for around 30 years and I remember it in other places as back as 1970. Do people hold Jones's Ale re-unions at Chester Festival, it would seem a likely event. |
Subject: RE: Jones's Ale in Chester From: John Routledge Date: 16 Sep 03 - 01:50 PM Les - "Frodsham" still is in the Queen's Head Yard on Friday nights. If you are anywhere near a visit is recommended if my recent visit is anything to go by. Thanks for the reminder I will go again even though it is a fair old travel. |
Subject: RE: Jones's Ale in Chester From: Les in Chorlton Date: 16 Sep 03 - 01:54 PM Thanks John. I seem to remember a previous venue was a pub on the other side of the road that had a wooden pavilion in the back. I saw the Antrobus Soulcakers there. That was truly wierd and magical.Ian and Grace Wood ran it for years now I understand it is Mrs & Mr Alexander, Alt and Carol? But I think they have been there from near the start. |
Subject: RE: Jones's Ale in Chester From: rodentred Date: 16 Sep 03 - 05:51 PM A timely thread. It is 25 years this week I met my wife (to be) in the Queens Head folk club in Frodsham. I recall a young fiddler (by the name of George (now Georgina le) Faux) in there who could not play a note (being somewhat inebriated at the time). I asked him what he did and he said 'I'm an artist in burnt clay - i.e. a brickie. How we laughed... |
Subject: RE: Jones's Ale in Chester From: Mr Happy Date: 17 Sep 03 - 02:41 AM Les, The sessions I mentioned are predominantly song & tune events. You can see further details here: http://www.chesterfolk.freeserve.co.uk/events.htm and here: http://www25.brinkster.com/folkorbit/ |
