We're going to be suspending the hosting of our monthly third-Friday jam/song circle, due to increased professional responsibilities and shifting health priorities in the coming year. Since starting our jam in 1997, a multitude of music opportunities have sprung up in the counties to the east, west, and north. We're going to be checking some of them out, hoping to see jam pals there, as well as getting together informally to play with folks we've met and played with at our jams. We'll continue to host Mudcat Gatherings and other all-weekend music houseparties from time to time, too.

I'll be inviting people to list their events and respond to questions about them here, since Mudcat also has such a wealth of resources that people can use and since many of these players have a lot they can share with us here at the 'Cat.

LISTING YOUR MUSICIANS' EVENTS

Location, time, contact information, website? (Map links are helpful in our widespread, rugged area.) Is there a cost?

How are beginners incorporated in your sort of jam, session, or songcircle?

Is there a list of commonly-used beginner's tunes available?

Are there are specfic instruments that are welcome or not welcome?

Is there a particular genre of music that is the focus? Will music tend to be all instrumental, all sung, or a mix?

Are tunebooks/sonbooks/songhseets allowed? Is it expected that copies should be brought for others?

What are your thoughts on session etiquette?

Thanks,

~Susan

So what are these "music opportunities" in the counties east of you? And is there nothing to the south (a.k.a. closer to me!)?

Monthly concerts take place at First United Methodist Church, 1034 Broad Street in Horseheads, NY.

The person to know in Tioga County for music concert information is Deb Rubin. She coordinates some of the concerts and the local jams. She also manages (and helps edit) the Canyon Country Newsletter that not only has concert listings but also a For Sale section that somethings has some neat stuff. If you'd like to receive this free newsletter (really a much better resource for non-mainstream music), email Deb at: drubin@ptd.net

Also, the link that failed above was for a local newspaper music section. You can find it by visiting www.star-gazette.com and look into the Entertainment Section under Calendar. :)

Enjoy!

I see that Grass Stained Genes is playing at Ten West on the 21st. If you are in the area they are one heck of a good band. The banjo player is amazing. If you have not seen them you owe it to yourself to catch them at least once. Also Carol makes a nice cup of coffee.

Both Ridge Plucker and myself have seen Simple Gifts numerous times and highly recommend that you see them if you get the chance. Their guitarist, Karen Hirshon, won the Song of the Year Award from an Accoustic Association, the name of which escapes me at the moment. In anycase, they are delightful and enjoy jamming with their audience. Karen also plays a mean set of spoons!

The Folk Gathering at Greenwood Furnace looks to be a great event as well. We attended a larger workshop that these women held earlier this summer, Folk College. If you can go, DO! We are planning on it! Lots of great people and music...how can you go wrong? :)

Also, in Bradford County (a 2 hour drive from Wellsboro), there will be the Third Annual Heart of the Alleghenies Folk Music Festival hosted by Clark and Cindy. Dates are: Friday, August 11 through Sunday, August 13, 2006. We're planning on this one too! Come join the fun! Alleghenies Folk Festival

From Kaaren in the Ithaca (NY) area--- Monthly jams:

What: Music, because we love it! The people who come to the jam determine what music is done. So far there has been a huge variety and a lot of fun!

Where: 213 S. Albany St., around the corner from City Health Club, the Firehall and down the street from Bangs Funeral Home on the corner.

When: First Tuesday of the Month every month, 7 PM until we're done- latecomers/early leavers all welcome!

**If anyone just wants to do music other than once a month, we can set it up!*

Kaaren also says more is planned:

I'm about to add three Saturday jams, starting in the fall - one in the fall, one next spring (2007), and one next summer (2007).

It's fair time and the local fairs have a great line-up!

The Troy (PA) Fair starts next week: Troy Fair, Bradford County, Pennsylvania

The second week in August is the beginning of the Tioga County Fair! Grass Stained Genes will be playing and Penny Eckman will be singing Patsy Cline tunes (man, you should hear this woman sing...she's AMAZING). Both of those concerts are free during the week and held inside the air-conditioned building! There's more going on, check it out here: Tioga County Fair, Whitneyville, Pennsylvania

Have fun!

Hi, Susan and Michelle:

We'll be performing at a bed-and-breakfast in the town. I'd rather not post the details on the Forum because it's a small gig for family and friends, not a big public performance. So I can't invite everyone on the internet who might peruse this thread, but of course Mudcat members would be welcome and I would love to meet you. Again, if you can make it, please PM me for details, but do it tonight or tomorrow 'cause I'm headin' for them hills on Friday!

Another one from Kaaren in Ithaca (see above).

*What:* Music, because we love it! The people who come to the jam determine what music is done. If singers come, we sing. If drummers come, we drum. No matter what, we always have fun, no matter how small or large the group!

*Where:* 213 S. Albany St., around the corner from City Health Club, the Firehall and down the street from Bangs Funeral Home on the corner.

*When:* First Week of the Month every month- 7:00 to 10:00.

* ****SAVE THIS DATE: SATURDAY, DECEMBER 2nd**** *After careful consideration of when the local concerts are happening and when the local sings and jams are happening I've decided upon Saturday, December 2nd as the first Saturday jam. *

*It will start at 1 and go till about 7 or 8, including a dish to pass at about 5. That way people can do music and go home before dark if they wish.*

I'm not comfortable posting Kaaren's phone number online, but people can PM me for further contact help.

~Susan

It's a little late to attend this event unless you are in the area since it is ending today, but for next year, keep your eye out in the Mansfield, PA area for the Fabulous 1890's Festvial! Lots of great old time music was enjoyed last night and today...still some time left for today if you are in the area! Not only is there music but there was a motorless parade, bands, animals, floats, horse and buggies, children dressed for the time period (adults too), a small fair in the town park...lots of fun for everyone! There were/are hot air balloons, spots exhibitions and then there's the event that is the center of it all...the very first night football game under lights took place at Symthe Park, Mansfield, PA in the 1890s. That game is re-enacted, complete with the uniforms worn then and the same rules. It's a great event and something to plan for in the future!

PLUS:
Fiddle and Hammered Dulcimer Workshops, All-Day Jam and Concert -- Corning, NY Nov. 6

-----------------------------------------------------

Hello everyone:

I am looking forward to a full day of hammered dulcimer and fiddle workshops, plus a potluck dinner, jam and a concert with my son. Please spread the word! Hope you can make it!!

Here is the full schedule:

Sat Nov 6 CORNING, NY

10-12 noon: hammered dulcimer workshop I "Getting beyond the melody" using 2, 3 and 4 note chords, tremolos, phrasing, dynamics, flams, fills, dissonances, basslines, syncopations, accent shifts, use of chord subs, bounced and hammered triplets and much more. (This workshop will go a bit slower than the afternoon workshop and is primarily designed for advanced beginners/novices through intermediates. However, more experienced players are welcome to attend as a wide variety of ideas/techniques will be explored).

1-3 p.m. hammered dulcimer workshop II "Arranging and backing up faster tunes" covering techniques/ideas such as adding swing, syncopations, accent shifts, adding chords, baselines, rag rhythms, chord subs, 4 against 3's, flams, fills, drones, triplets, drags, ghost notes and much more. This workshop will go a bit faster than the morning workshop but I encourage less experienced players to attend. There will be plenty for players of all levels.

3:30-5:30 p.m. Appalachian/old-time fiddle workshop: I recently completed a book/CD for Mel Bay on Appalachian fiddling. Following the philosophy of the approach in the book, my focus will be on using default bowing systems (e.g. the various uses of Nashville and Georgia shuffles, 3-1 bowing--up and down bowing, bow rocks, string-crossing, ghost bows, mid-bow pulses) along with left hand ornamentation (e.g. slides, triplets, grace notes, drones etc., double-stops, drones). Time and interest permitting, we may explore an altered tuning (e.g. ADAD, AEAE; DDAD). Some attention will be paid to bow holds and left hand position as needed. The workshop is designed for all levels of player.

5:30-7:30 p.m. Open jam and potluck

7:30 p.m. Concert with Ken Kolodner on fiddle, hammered dulcimer and hammered mbira and Brad Kolodner on banjo, banjola and guitar. Brad and I are just about to finish a recording of original and old time music. We plan on playing many of the tunes from the new recording which should be out in mid-November.

All events at The Drake House Studio Theater, 171 Cedars Arts Center located at 155 Cedar St., Corning, NY. $12 admission; half price for students w valid ID; Contact Debra at info@valleyfolk.org 607-962-4461 http://www.valleyfolk.org/

There will be opportunities for jamming all-day during and between the workshops. Hope to see you there! Should be a full day of music and fun!

Advanced registration for workshops is highly recommended. Send checks made out to: "Valley Folk- Debra Chesman" to this address: Valley Folk c/o Chesman, 18 Fox Lane East, Painted Post, NY 14870

I get a lot of great gig-mail from www.daveruch.com as well- go see his site. (I think Dave's a Catter.) Been too busy to post his emails, I'll try to watch for the next one and encourage him to post here-- I just don't have that much time anymore.

Here's another oft-received gig-promo othersfrom someone I and others here (incl Max) have lauded in the past.

It's all a paste from email except for the date, where I added a comment, and one at the end. It IS an annual event, well worth attending.

The Greenwood Furnace Folk Gathering is a fun and friendly weekend of
playing and listening to folk music - a fantastic three days of
workshops, concerts, jams, dancing and friendship. Activities are held
at Greenwood Furnace State Park in central PA, about 30 miles from
State College and 90 miles from Harrisburg. This is a gorgeous
location with beautiful mountain views, many miles of hiking trails,
and a six acre lake for swimming and fishing.

Musicians of all instruments and levels are welcome, and there are
also options for singers, dancers, and non-musicians. There's a choice
of about 45 workshops on topics ranging from old time tunes to shape
note singing to playing backup to how to learn by ear. Jam sessions
will take place throughout the weekend.

For those who are new to music, there will be dulcimers and autoharps
for you to rent for the weekend or borrow for a workshop, and we'll
have gentle and patient teachers to get you started. There will be a
staff concert each evening, followed by staff-led jams, singing around
the bonfire, and a contradance with open band.

The cost for the weekend is $65 if postmarked by August 1 and $80

dancing. A meal package with 3 meals Saturday and 2 meals Sunday is
available for $45.

Camping is available by calling the park 8am-4pm at 814/667-1800. Let

Ron; I've fond memories of your help @ Dan Stewarts "JAM" tent
at the Norwich, NY Family Bluegrass Fest. several years ago when a local TV Station filmed us with me playing one of my copyrighted pieces "If I Could Only Dream". Your excellent Bass work will always be remembered as well as your gift to me of Louie's DVD of the Applichian Mt. Boys TV show.   I might suggest that you contact CNYBA.com and inquire about a 2011 B/G festival booking. The 2010 president of the Central NY Bluegrass Assn. is Mr Dennis Crawford (MtUpton,NY.)
(607) 764-6453. Perhaps he can assist in possible future festival booking with the 2011 president, Mr. Underwood.
