Subject: RE: BS: What was your major From: Benjamin Date: 15 Nov 03 - 06:09 PM I'm currently majoring in Music Performance (classical guitar). Could be a while before the degree comes in. If I weren't doing music, I think I would probably be looking into horticulture. |
Subject: RE: BS: What was your major From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 15 Nov 03 - 08:38 PM Majored in English. My university didn't have minors per se, but most of my electives were in philosophy. I'd rather have by house destroyed to make way for a new bypass than pursue advanced coursework in either field. But I'd love to work toward a MFA in ceramics and sculpture if I had the time and money to do so. Bruce |
Subject: RE: BS: What was your major From: Rapparee Date: 15 Nov 03 - 08:59 PM English Literature, with minors in drama, theology, library science, and philosophy. That's the BA (I screwed around a lot). Library and Information Science. That's the MS. English, but a writing concentration. That's the half-done-and-going-nowhere MA. I may be the only one on Mudcat who has ever taken an honors-level course in Byzantine History (two semesters, no less). If I weren't in English I probably would have been a History major. I would have loved to be in experimental or theoretical physics, or perhaps astrophysics. My mathematical eptitude ain't, though. |
Subject: RE: BS: What was your major From: Mary in Kentucky Date: 15 Nov 03 - 09:02 PM Chemistry. And I may be the only one who got an A in badminton. (My freshman history prof did his research in Byzantine history, so we got a healthy dose of that.) |
Subject: RE: BS: What was your major From: Bill D Date: 15 Nov 03 - 09:12 PM well, I got part way thru a course on Byzantine history (not graduate, however)before I had to drop out that semester for personal reasons...I still have J.B. Bury's book on Byzantine history--barely read ¼ of it. |

Subject: RE: BS: What was your major From: GUEST,pdc Date: 15 Nov 03 - 09:51 PM Honours English, and I was lucky -- I didn't go to university till I was 48, so I appreciated it more than I would have when I was very young. The most exhilarating 4 years of my life, even when my friends' children said things like, "Mrs. *** please don't tell my mum I smoke!" |
Subject: RE: BS: What was your major From: Bill D Date: 15 Nov 03 - 09:58 PM LOL, Bobert!..durned if that ain't an idea! Hollow it down to chapter 47 and polish it till all the words are clear... Subject: RE: BS: What was your major From: Joe Offer Date: 16 Nov 03 - 11:54 PM I think I'm the only Theology major around this joint, although I see that Rapaire had a minor in it. My minor was Philosophy, which I didn't start to understand until I was 50. I also put in enough time for a major in German and a minor in English. That qualified me to work as an investigator for Uncle Sam for 25 years. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: BS: What was your major From: SueB Date: 17 Nov 03 - 03:15 PM Majored in History, minored in Mathematics. Detoured for a year in the College of Education thinking I would become a high school math teacher, but the kids scared me and the professors in the College of Ed were the very worst I have ever encountered at any institution of learning, bar none. Isn't it ironic? |
Subject: RE: BS: What was your major From: Roger in Baltimore Date: 17 Nov 03 - 03:23 PM I have a BA in Chemistry. It enabled me to qualify as a Petroleum Products Analyst when I entered the Army. I worked allmost a year as a Junior Chemist improving a sticky paste made from recycled rubber and Gisonite. Then I became an Addictions Counselor (requirements were "an 8th grade education and 6 months clean and sober). Went back to school (using the GI Bill) and majored in Community Counseling Psychology. While I was a Social Welfare prof at the University of Arkansas I took several writing workshops from Miller Williams in poetry. Tha's what I want to make a living at. Plus I would like to get a law degree as soon as I can find the time. I do intend to do that or else get an MFA in poetry. (Wow, I said it!) |
Subject: RE: BS: What was your major From: jimmyt Date: 17 Nov 03 - 04:37 PM The above degree that I am most envious is KateG (guest's) in Medieval Archeology with a concentration on Viking Scotland. At least it sounds like it would be the most interesting field of study. |
Subject: RE: BS: What was your major From: akenaton Date: 17 Nov 03 - 04:59 PM I left school at 15,and have lived and worked(manually),in the same few square miles of Scotland all my life. This has given me the opportunity to observe people from infancy to old age.As the song goes "somethings lost and somethings gained in living every day". Iv always been of the opinion that too many facts in your head stop you thinking properly....Anyway its great to be in such elevated company...Cheers Ake.. |

Subject: RE: BS: What was your major From: Bill D Date: 17 Nov 03 - 06:01 PM "..too many facts in your head stop you thinking properly." and too FEW facts in your head can prevent you from knowing what you're thinking about.. I'm not sure how to get just the right number of the right facts in your head. |
Subject: RE: BS: What was your major From: Joybell Date: 17 Nov 03 - 06:44 PM And how do you get rid of the ones you no longer want? The thinking still works ok, I find, but it can't be good for you not having a recycle bin or a brain defragmentor. |
Subject: RE: BS: What was your major From: akenaton Date: 18 Nov 03 - 12:46 PM Bill... I think that most of us who correspond on this forum (with a few exception),Don't do so to collect "brownie points",but because we "feel" strongly about some topic or another. Its impossible for any of us to know all the facts about these issues, but that "straight from the heart" feeling, compells us to make our views known ... Here's to us....Ake |
Subject: RE: BS: What was your major From: Amos Date: 18 Nov 03 - 12:53 PM AKe: I would submit that it is not the number of facts, but the substance of them and the weight they are granted. Having a lively intelligence which is forced to gather its facts from direct observation tends to increase the certainty, which is why people seem to get duller going through some schoolings. Most important, observation provides a clearer sense of relative importance, while academics frequently wander off into lala land when it comes to sorting out what is important and why versus what is not. Subject: RE: BS: What was your major From: LilyFestre Date: 18 Nov 03 - 02:47 PM I know people at both ends of the spectrum...some that have multiple doctorates that are fascinating and also folks who quit school at the age of 12 who are equally as fascinating and interesting. Then there are those who are college educated who are borish to match those who sit in front of the television all day...both equally uninteresting IMHO....I think it's in the indiviual and where your personal tasts lie as to who is interesting and who is not......leaving very little to the education or lack thereof. Michelle |
Subject: RE: BS: What was your major From: greg stephens Date: 18 Nov 03 - 02:56 PM Chemistry. Oh, Rapaire: I may be the only one on Mudcat who has ever taken an honors-level course in Byzantine History (two semesters, no less). I do believe my mate from home, who has been known to post here, did Byzantine Studies as part of his degree! Evidently it's more common than we think! |
Subject: RE: BS: What was your major From: BanjoRay Date: 19 Nov 03 - 07:39 AM Chemistry - graduated '64. I learned far more banjo than chemistry at university. Masters in computer studies '93. I would have loved to have done that originally, had I known then what I know now - but Aberystwyth only had one computer and a huge queue to use it. I don't know what I'd pick these days - most useful subjects are tedious, while enjoyable subjects would probably get the enjoyment quickly destroyed. Cheers Ray |
