Subject: BS: Where are the Konungur Islands? From: Tig Date: 25 Nov 03 - 04:55 PM I got an 'interesting' wooden box at Redcar Car Boot last Sunday which included a lot of old (mainly C19th) coins in amongst the other bits. FC sorted them into the 23 countries they had come from but we were really stuck with one. It's tiny, about 1cm round, and is worth 1 Island Eyrir. The other side informs us it was made in 1942 and that it comes from the Islands Konungar. We can't find any references to such a place. Help - it is driving us round the bend wondering where it is! |
Subject: RE: BS: Where on earth are the Konungur Islands? From: Ebbie Date: 25 Nov 03 - 05:05 PM I put it into google and a number of links came up. The language, I'm assuming, is Swedish. |
Subject: RE: BS: Where on earth are the Konungur Islands? From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 25 Nov 03 - 05:13 PM Googling Konungur (or) Konungar came up with at least two sites in a Scandinavian language which prominently mentioned "Svenska" or "Sverige". The exact location is not clear, but it's got to be Swedish in culture. Dave Oesterreich |

Subject: RE: BS: Where on earth are the Konungur Islands? From: TheBigPinkLad Date: 25 Nov 03 - 06:38 PM Eyrir is an Icelandic coin -- my Icelandic is rusty but I believe Konungur means the equivalent of 'crown' in English and Les from Hull is right, Islands means Iceland. Subject: RE: BS: Where on earth are the Konungur Islands? From: Amos Date: 25 Nov 03 - 06:59 PM I believe (unless my memory is really worse than I feared) that Iceland was governed by Denmark and became a sovereign state under the Danish crown back in the 20th century sometime. FInally independent in the 1940's. But the currency there is the kronur. Google discovers that: monatary terms, Eyrir and Krona are the singular terms, Auror and Kronur are the plural terms, 100 Auror equals 1 Krona. Amazing age we live in, eh? A |
Subject: RE: BS: Where on earth are the Konungur Islands? From: Snuffy Date: 25 Nov 03 - 07:07 PM Konungur means King in Icelandic. The King of Denmark would also be King Of Iceland. - is his head on that side of the coin? |
Subject: RE: BS: Where on earth are the Konungur Islands? From: Ebbie Date: 25 Nov 03 - 07:11 PM No, Snuffy, it's on the tails side. :) |
Subject: RE: BS: Where on earth are the Konungur Islands? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 26 Nov 03 - 05:46 AM "Eyrir" is the name of a coin - here is a picture of a Iceland Republic 1 Eyrir coin from 1946; in 1942 it was still part of the Kingdom of Denmark, though independant at that time, since Denmark was under German occupation, and Iceland was not. |
Subject: RE: BS: Where on earth are the Konungur Islands? From: Les from Hull Date: 26 Nov 03 - 05:40 PM Iceland was occupied - but by the Allies. |
Subject: RE: BS: Where on earth are the Konungur Islands? From: LadyJean Date: 26 Nov 03 - 11:49 PM We didn't have Google when the Tamburitzans did a dance from the island of Krk. So, I went to the atlas, which told me that Krk is off the coast of what was then Yugoslavia. (Of course it didn't tell us how to pronounce it.) Try an Atlas. |
Subject: RE: BS: Where on earth are the Konungur Islands? From: Wolfgang Date: 01 Dec 03 - 07:18 AM As far as I know it is pronounced 'crc' (like 'craic' minus the vowel sound). That language also gave the world the longest sentence without any vowel, but I don't recollect it now. Wolfgang |

Subject: RE: BS: Where on earth are the Konungur Islands? From: skarpi Date: 02 Dec 03 - 03:34 PM Halló all here are some knowledge about the Iclandic (Danish)kingdom. It started in 1380 after we had been in kingdom of Norway 1262-1264, after the Danish people and the kingdom had ruled over us for many centuries we woke up and started the Independence battle. We had the first agrement in 1918 and got the Independence 1944. I coult do this in more words but I think this is enough. All the best Skarpi Iceland. |

Subject: RE: BS: Where on earth are the Konungur Islands? From: GUEST Date: 13 Jan 09 - 12:44 AM hello - i found this thread researching my "new" vintage coin bracelet which consists of nine coins in two sizes, all from 1942. both sizes have a crown over the letter c with an x inside them, and they all read "islands" (note the plural), konungur. the backs of the smaller coins read "island eyrir" and have a large "1". and the larger coins read "islands aurar" and have a large "2". i collect and resell vintage jewelry - but picked this one up for myself. thanks for the info, everyone. |
Subject: RE: BS: Where on earth are the Konungur Islands? From: GUEST,Louise Date: 24 Mar 09 - 11:47 AM I have a bracelet with 7 "coins" naming the Konungut Islands, a British type crown, a large "C" with and 'x' in it and the date 1942. From the message posted in 2003, I'm guessing it is from Iceland, but what would the C and x be for? |
