Ok, I'm curious .... does "shite" rhyme with "white"?

OR, perhaps with "pretty"??

Hmm, could even be "flighty" ....

Speaking of which ... when my piano students perform at festivals, recitals etc. they are expected to announce to the audience the name of their piece and who composed it. There are at least 2 composers whose names present a bit of a challenge --- J. Schytte and R. Fuchs.

Certain renditions of these names are especially popular with pre-pubescent boys. Precious minutes out of half-hour lessons are often wasted, never to be retrieved, as they collapse on the piano bench howling, just considering the possibilities. It's fun, but it does make for a rather shite lesson (at least from my point of view)

At the risk of drifting off-topic on this oh-so-serious thread, I'm wondering ... do any of you multi-national Catters know the correct pronunciation of those names?

Thanks, daylia

This is another one of those subtle British humour threads, isn't it? I never get those. Everyone else is snuffling in their suds with the humour of it all and all Isee is a bunch of lame-assed prepubescent punning. I just don't understand the limey sense o;yewma, I guiess! :<>)) (Out here we send such folks to Arizona and tell them to come back when they have a sense of Yuma).

Oaklet, like Mr. Dick, is wise in all things, and I shouldn't wonder that a bit of enforced mollusc therapy would cure the suicidal.

Why is it that the British insist on misspelling and mispronouncing common vulgarities?

Dear Greg,

I would rather risk Oaklet's whelks anyday than have 13 nautili, octopi, squid or cuttlefish shuffling down or up any part of my alimentary canal. Unless tenderised, chopped and cooked in a nice garlicky sauce of course!

Dear LH,

There is a world of difference between s**t and shite. Anyway shite in my view is an Irish variant (c.f. gobshite) adopted enthusiastically by the English in recent times.

You say "shite".

I say "really".
You say "quite".

You drive on the left.
I drive on the right.

It's not a big issue.
No reason to fight.

Now just go to bed.
And turn out the light.

Amos..I feel exactly the same about modern American humour! That's why british comedy shows don't translate to America. I can't wait to see what's done to the wonderful "The Office".
I can watch the gurning Carey or what's called movie comedy in the U.S. etc, etc and not raise a titter.
As Hurricane Higgins once aptly said; "It's as entertaining as watching your stools float"
Having also read the gibberish about Tolkien being posted at the moment, which did make me laugh out loud....all these adults taking these funny names seriously...I realise there are many planets out there I'll never visit, and that many others won't be visiting mine!

Now a lot of American "humor" in modern spew -- I mean media -- is also pretty trashy, I would say. But live and let live -- no one is paying me to be a cultural critic, eh? ">)

Other people are shite. And life? Life is a fat, stupid, pompous, ruddy face waiting for me to introduce it to my gloved fist.

Life is good as far as I'm concerned, particularly for the gentleman of leisure who has plenty of disposable income and a fast luxury motor vehicle or two.

My good man,

Too true. One must keep in mind that those in steerage may suffer a bit, but that is only apt. My Dada worked very hard to give me this lifestyle. He earned it on the backs of those less fortunate than I, but remember Mark Twain's statement that God must have loved the poor because he made so MANY of them! Let that suffice, what?

I like your line of reasoning, brucie. But do think of changing your membername or at least capitalizing the "B", because it makes you sound like a whiny, sniveling little Lord Fauntleroy type in a blue blazer.

Of course, there isn't a lot one can do with the name Bruce, is there? Unless one is a Scot. Robert the Bruce had real presence. If you have another given name, I suggest using it first, as in "William the Bruce".

But if you should visit England, for God's sake don't call yourself "Willie"! Ha! Ha! Ha!

Cos they can't handle their own and so they off load it on to you cos you're a mug and they have that sussed for sure.

Love, sunlight, new-born babies, freshly mown grass, every cliche in the Book of life comes from a fundamental truth about what is available to all of us.
Dark times only provide the shadow to highlight our best times.
Like most of us I have known black periods but each time I survive to reach a different place I find living every day is my kind of fun!
This isn't meant to sound corny but, oh shit , it's just the way I feel.
If you are going through a bad time, hang on in there.

Life Explained
Just in case you were wondering:

On the first day God created the cow. God said, "You must go to field with the farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have calves and give milk to support the farmer. I will give you a life span of sixty years." The cow said, "That's a kind of a tough life you want me to live for sixty years. Let me have twenty years and I'll give back the other forty." And God agreed.

On the second day, God created the dog. God said, "Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. I will give you a life span of twenty years." The dog said, "That's too long to be barking. Give me ten years and I'll give back the other ten." So God agreed (sigh).

On the third day God created the monkey. God said, entertain people, do monkey tricks, make them laugh. I'll give you a twenty year life span." Monkey said, "How boring, monkey tricks for twenty years? I don't think so. Dog gave you back ten, so that's what I'll do too, okay?" And God agreed again.

On the fourth day God created man. God said, "Eat, sleep, play, have sex, enjoy. Do nothing, just enjoy, enjoy. I'll give you twenty years." Man said, "What? Only twenty years? No way man. Tell you what, I'll take my twenty, and the forty the cow gave back, and the ten the dog gave back and the ten the monkey gave back. That makes eighty, okay?" "Okay," said God. "You've got a deal."

So that is why for the first twenty years we eat, sleep, play, have sex enjoy, and do nothing; For the next forty years we slave in the sun to support our family; For the next ten years we do monkey tricks to entertain our grandchildren; And for the last ten years we sit in front of the house and bark at everybody.

Life has now been explained.

Ah yes, that explains it all to me now! I seem to be a bit of a muddle tho'... I eat, play, enjoy sex... enjoy sex... enjoy sex... (whoops needle's stuck) support my family, do monkey tricks (no grand children yet) and sometimes bark very loudly. What sort of animal am I?

Having just undergone a rather traumatic ten days or so having been told I had cancer of the womb, undergoing an emergency hysterectomy and having to wait almost a week to have it confirmed that they've caught it in tome and I will not need any further treatment - life is definitely NOT shite for me.

I found out how much my children and all those around me care about me and the goodness of people in general. I'm lucky - I got away with it this time and, believe me, life is great and precious. My daughter left her three year old son at home with his father 100 miles up the road from me to be with me and now has me installed with her looking forward to Christmas with my family. On the journey up here I looked at the beauty of the passing countryside and thanked my lucky stars that I live in a country where, when necessary, the Health Service really can pull out the stops.

I'm sure that there will be others who have had a much harder time, with less support through illness and I daresay in time that I shall start taking some things for granted again. But right now ..... LIFE IS GREAT!!!!!!!!!

Alas, I cannot concur.... the Health Service has not only lied to me, but lied twice with different lies and is making things difficult and life a bit of a trial.

As for the rest, I think I bypassed 'man' and went straight to Monkey and Dog together.
