Subject: Leaves of Autumn -- Pioneer Song?
From: chu1001780@aol.com

I'd be interested in the lyrics to a song that was featured in the movie "The Alamo" produced and directed by John Wayne back in the 60's. I believe that the name was the "Leaves of Autumn" and the lyrics begin with:

A time to be plowin'
A time to be sewin'
A time to be courtin'
A girl of your own....

and ends with something like the leaves of Autumn are callin' me home.

I believe it's and old pioneer song but am certainly not claming any expertise here.

Would love any information anyone could provide at my AOL email address: chu1001780@aol.com.

Thanks in advance for any efforts you might make!
Chuck.

The words for this song are taken out of the bible (I don't know the relevant book and verses) and I believe it was recorded by the Byrds. That may not help you - but it may trigger some-one else's memory into providing the lyrics.

Howdy Chuck & Tony,

Sorry, Tony, the answer for Chuck is not as easy as you're trying to make it. You're suggesting "Turn, Turn, Turn" or "To Everything There Is a Season" which was put together by Pete Seeger from Ecclesiastes (and is in DT).

Sorry, Chuck, I don't know the Leaves of Autumn or Pioneer Song.

Allinkausay,

Bill

Bill - you're correct - I was confusing the song with Turn Turn Turn and now I come to think of it - I think this song is called "The Green Leaves of Summer"

A time to be plowin' A time to be sewin' A time to be courtin' A girl of your own

It was good to be young then

To be close to the earth

Now the green leaves of summer

Are calling me home.

That may not be correct but it's all I can remember for now. If anyone else can add anything - please do.

Tony

Chuck: The song is "Green Leaves of Summer." It was written, I believe, especially for the movie, and was recorded (I think) by a group called The Limeliters. Your best bet is to rent a video of the movie and get the words from there. As I recall, the entire song is there-- if not at the beginning, then at the end.

That's it Jamas! Those are the lyrics. The Green Leaves of Summer -- great!

And thanks to all for your information! You've been most generous with your time and I certainly have more to go on now.

Sorry I haven't got around to replying till now -- life's been hectic.

I'll continue my search based on the information you've relayed.

Thanks again! Chuck.

"Green Leaves of Summer" is on several albums by the Brothers Four, including "B.M.O.C." and "Greatest Hits". The latter has been reissued on CD.
