I think we have all heard of the 1914 Christmas truce, between the German and English troops I was surprised to ses a TV film, last night (23rd Dec) called The Silent Night. It was alleged to be based on an event that took place during the second world war. The plot of the film being that a German mother and her son, went to stay in their log cabin over the Christmas period, in 1944, I think. There they were joined by three American and three German soldiers. The mother, called Elizabeth, in the film; allowed the soldiers to stay in the cabin on condition that their weapons stayed outside. The film ended with both sides realizing that they had more in common than their political masters would have them believe. Does anyoone know anything about this event?

I have seen this video in stores and always been meaning to rent it some time as I thought it was the same story as the WW1 Christmas truce.

I never saw it. But I remember this sad TV movie about a little African-American German boy orphan..he met an African American soldier who befriended him and gave him some chocolate. Then one of the older boys..they seemed to be living in a barn with some nuns in an orphanage situation..started to tell the younger ones about Christmas and presents..and then he told them about chocolate. It was so sad. And then the other little boy says is this chocolate? And pulls out the chocolate he had been given. mg

The book was written by an alum of our university. His name is Stanley Weintraub. He gave an interview on the NPR program Just A Game on December 21st. of 2002. You can access the archive of the show and print out the interview. Sorry, I can't help with the 1944 event. Perhaps Mr. Weintraub can. I believe he can still be be reached via email at Penn State University.
