hi

just wondering, if you could recommend a few other websites, which ones do you think are the best, and why?
(any topic will do)

Freda - Related to Frodo Underhill ?

I like the mandolincafe.com - no BS - just mandolin talk with some very informed players. I learn a lot there.

Also the 13th fret.com for guitar talk and sometimes acousticguitar.com's forum.

I favor Google News as a portal to the media, and SlashDot for technical developments, and a couople of nanotechnology sites, and Wired.com, Salon.com for content, NYTimes.com, Dilbert and Doonesburuy.

for random new 'stuff' The Black Stump

for a different, safer entrance to Google

to follow my 'profession' home of the Woodturners (and 40-50 more sites on working/turning wood)

and one of the most useful, important, well organized places anywhere Virtual Reference Desk

and THE place to go if you need a software program for free Son of Spy

and so many more 'occasional' ones that I can't imagine how to explain.

(uhhmmm...you didn't really want to know about the ones with the goats, the nuns, and the trampoline covered with Jello, did you?) ;>0

I've found lots of excellent information about a wide variety of topics (health, science, art, history etc) at a website called About.com

Caution: the value of this site is in the volumes of excellent information available there. But I do NOT recommend giving them your primary eMail address so that you can participate in the forums. I HIGHLY suspect they sell eMail addresses to spammers. I was never troubled with porn showing up on my eMail every day until a couple months after I joined an About.com forum. Now I get greeted with a dozen or so downright disgusting messages every day. AARRRGGGHHHHH

When I first joined About.com, I made a typo when I submitted my eMail address. I fixed it later. Now, some of those porn sites have a little clicky you can use to (supposedly) erase your name from their mailing lists. WHen I tried that, a little bar popped up, showing both the mistake I made when I first signed into About.com, and the correction. That's how I KNOW it was About.com I can thank for being asked a dozen times a day if I want a bigger penis, or if I'd like to make out with a horse.

Anyway, sorry if I've gotten off topic here, but thanks for the opportunity to vent!

daylia

I like this site for the serendipity of it. I look for musical threads but there is so much going on that the BS threads are enjoyable too. Another site I have found that is interesting is blogdex.com it is an index of other sites some serious - newspaper site - others frivilous quiz sites or stupid photos. But a pleasant way to spend some time.

Every day -

BBC News
Guardian UK
International Herald Tribune
Village Voice
NY Post (horoscope page)
Mudcat Forum
Ananova (Quirkies)
Reuters Latest Financial News

Weekly -

Albion Monitor (subscription - news, also Molly Ivins' columns)
New Yorker Online
Las Vegas Weekly - good movie reviewer
Alibi (Albuquerque version of Las Vegas Weekly)
Miami Herald (for Dave Barry's columns and Carl Hiassen's)
Hindustan Times - feng shui column

Occasionally -

Boston Globe
The Economist
The Onion
Yahoo Currency News
escapeartist.com - international volunteer opportunities
Daily Afflictions

I google and amazon all the time too, to track down books and music,
and whatever I'm curious about at any given moment.

I'd love to know about some good music and music news sites -
so far on my favorites list I've collected these, based on tips from Mudcat threads -

BBC Radio 2 folk music sessions
Pub Session Tunes at traditionalmusic.co.uk
The Record Lady
rootsandrhythm.com - newsletter
Hetzler's Fakebook

My usual practice is to add sites to my favorites list willy-nilly, then whenever it starts to get long and unwieldy go back and delete off sites that I haven't been back to more than once or twice in the previous 3 or 4 months - time to do that again, I think.

I've just discovered this one: "Folk Archive Resource Northeast" (based in Gateshead) here: FARNE

28th January 2004 sees the launch of the full archive - although there is already plenty available ! I'm just listening now to a continuous delight of recordings - "Where Are Ye Gannin ?" now playing on Windows Media...oooh, and now some lovely fiddle playing..."Warks Burn Waltz"...

Lots of information, discussion boards....It promises to be an excellent site. Go take a look and listen...

If you really want to check out websites, check out the websites of various public libraries. Many, many, many times they have TONS of links, which can take you to other links, and those to others, ad nauseam.

Remember, "the truth is out there" -- along with a LOT of BS, halftruths, outright lies, unconsidered opinions, and general fog and crap. You gotta use your head!

Hi Freda. When I get back on my own computer, I will send you some of my favourites. I can't access my favourites list at the moment.

They include some good witchy sites, some useful info ones like Snopes, one which off the top of my head is called monologues.co.uk, which has things like Albert and the Lion, one called Ping, where I can tell straight away if mudcat is completely dead when it is down, my favourite weather websites, a lot of folk ones, including performers, and quite a few funny ones.

Right now, I think I might go and enjoy the excellent thunderstorm that is breaking!

Mudcat
Tweedsblues.net

(Ahhh, Bobert. That's only two...)

Yeah, is that pathethic, 'er what?

Try this website:>

www.cbc.ca/outfront/listen.

They are archived stories recorded by the CBC of ordinary folks talking about a particular incident in their lives. Think I'll go there shortly.

The only other sites I go to regularly are:

Ebay

A variety of hobby supply shops for model kit builders.

A couple of stock market sites where I watch the stocks and precious metals.

Yahoo

There are no other discussion forums which I spend any time on.

This is a good site when you want to do a little reading at a slightly slower pace than general internet skipping around:

Just out of curiosity, how did those of you offered lengthy lists of "Favorites" do that? Did you actually type each and every one or was there some cut and paste method used? I have a print-out of my address book but don't know how to preserve my ever-getting-longer list of bookmarked items. Thanks. Sheila

I have a sprawling list of bookmarks. Filkers' pages, folkies' pages, friends' pages, travel sites, SF/fantasy sites, and so on. But there are only a handful I visit daily:

Narbonic -- web comic about a mad scientist and her assistants: a computer geek, a superintelligent gerbil, and a trigger-happy law student. Since my fiancee is a microbiologist, this strip has quite a bit of personal appeal (and is a running joke between us ).

Sluggy Freelance -- another amusing webcomic. I especially like the pets, a bouncy ferret easily distracted by shiny objects and a homicidal telemarketer-hating rabbit.

User Friendly -- Computer humor.

Kevin and Kell -- By Bill Holbrook of "On The Fastrack" fame.

Debbie's Blatherings -- The only of my friends' on-line journals I read every day. There are good filk links to be found through Debbie's various web sites.

Guest Sheila

If you use Internet Explorer, just click on the File button at the top and choose "Import and Export." You can export all or part of your favorites list. The export will be an html file, which you can open in IE (or Word) to copy and past whatever parts you want, or you can just give the file to a friend who can "import" it to his/her own machine.

A plaintext list of the sites mentioned here so far runs to about 8 pages, with a little more than one line per site since several URLs wrap to a couple of lines. Word's "wordcount" indicates 259 sites in the list. (I haven't sorted to look for duplicates yet, but there don't appear to be many.)

Out of curiosity, I did a dump of my favorites, clipped them down to 1 per line, and got a 45 page list – about 720 sites. The amazing thing is that I recognize nearly all of them quite easily, and delude myself that I really do intend to use the majority of them – "sometime soon."

The only site, other than mudcat, that I visit on a regular basis (at least a couple of times per week) is:

http://www.artrenewal.org/ : ARC International - The Art Renewal Center

This is a very large art collection, and it is expanding fairly rapidly, so I check their home page regularly to see if they've added any new naked ladies. The collection is strictly limited to artists of the "realist" schools, but currently includes 26,824 images by 2,645 artists (their count). No, I haven't counted them to check their tally; but I have looked at all of their posted thumbnails and about 800 of their full view images. Far too many portraits and sailing ships, but lots of good images. The downloadable images are of excellent quality (most would print cleanly at 13 x 19 inch, my printers limit) and selected ones are available as "high res" images that should go to billboard size with no problems. [The "typical" art site images at other sites, including some "national museum" sites, pixilate noticeably (to my eye) at 5 x 7 inch, if you can get that out of them.]

Anyone looking for work by an artist who's name they know, might want to go directly to the ARC index at

http://www.artrenewal.org/asp/database/contents.asp : ARC Museum Contents (Page 1 of 18)

For artists ARC hasn't collected (yet) I frequently, on an irregular basis, go to:

http://artcyclopedia.com/index.html : Artcyclopedia The Guide to Fine Art on the Internet

Artcyclopedia is a search engine that indexes online art collections. Since the standard engines generally skip over the .org and .edu, and their crawlers can't search databases (most online collections use database formats), this is a very useful "special purpose search engine" for anyone interested in "legit" art.

I have recently discovered an interesting group of sites that may be generically described as "links to specialized search engines." There are several dozen such "list" sites, and there's some hope of finding a good one that's worth passing on, but thus far the ones I've been able to survey are too "special interest" in areas I'm not very interested in.

Without further comment, the export of my favorites shows I've been to the following sites within fairly recent times, (but not necessarily recently enough to guarantee they all work). Some of them might be of interest(?)
