Subject: RE: BS: what other websites do you go to? From: *daylia* Date: 20 Jan 04 - 01:24 PM I've found lots of excellent information about a wide variety of topics (health, science, art, history etc) at a website called About.com Caution: the value of this site is in the volumes of excellent information available there. But I do NOT recommend giving them your primary eMail address so that you can participate in the forums. I HIGHLY suspect they sell eMail addresses to spammers. I was never troubled with porn showing up on my eMail every day until a couple months after I joined an About.com forum. Now I get greeted with a dozen or so downright disgusting messages every day. AARRRGGGHHHHH When I first joined About.com, I made a typo when I submitted my eMail address. I fixed it later. Now, some of those porn sites have a little clicky you can use to (supposedly) erase your name from their mailing lists. WHen I tried that, a little bar popped up, showing both the mistake I made when I first signed into About.com, and the correction. That's how I KNOW it was About.com I can thank for being asked a dozen times a day if I want a bigger penis, or if I'd like to make out with a horse. Anyway, sorry if I've gotten off topic here, but thanks for the opportunity to vent! daylia |

Subject: RE: BS: what other websites do you go to? From: JohnInKansas Date: 27 Jan 04 - 08:39 AM A plaintext list of the sites mentioned here so far runs to about 8 pages, with a little more than one line per site since several URLs wrap to a couple of lines. Word's "wordcount" indicates 259 sites in the list. (I haven't sorted to look for duplicates yet, but there don't appear to be many.) Out of curiosity, I did a dump of my favorites, clipped them down to 1 per line, and got a 45 page list – about 720 sites. The amazing thing is that I recognize nearly all of them quite easily, and delude myself that I really do intend to use the majority of them – "sometime soon." The only site, other than mudcat, that I visit on a regular basis (at least a couple of times per week) is: http://www.artrenewal.org/ : ARC International - The Art Renewal Center This is a very large art collection, and it is expanding fairly rapidly, so I check their home page regularly to see if they've added any new naked ladies. The collection is strictly limited to artists of the "realist" schools, but currently includes 26,824 images by 2,645 artists (their count). No, I haven't counted them to check their tally; but I have looked at all of their posted thumbnails and about 800 of their full view images. Far too many portraits and sailing ships, but lots of good images. The downloadable images are of excellent quality (most would print cleanly at 13 x 19 inch, my printers limit) and selected ones are available as "high res" images that should go to billboard size with no problems. [The "typical" art site images at other sites, including some "national museum" sites, pixilate noticeably (to my eye) at 5 x 7 inch, if you can get that out of them.] Anyone looking for work by an artist who's name they know, might want to go directly to the ARC index at http://www.artrenewal.org/asp/database/contents.asp : ARC Museum Contents (Page 1 of 18) For artists ARC hasn't collected (yet) I frequently, on an irregular basis, go to: http://artcyclopedia.com/index.html : Artcyclopedia The Guide to Fine Art on the Internet Artcyclopedia is a search engine that indexes online art collections. Since the standard engines generally skip over the .org and .edu, and their crawlers can't search databases (most online collections use database formats), this is a very useful "special purpose search engine" for anyone interested in "legit" art. I have recently discovered an interesting group of sites that may be generically described as "links to specialized search engines." There are several dozen such "list" sites, and there's some hope of finding a good one that's worth passing on, but thus far the ones I've been able to survey are too "special interest" in areas I'm not very interested in. Without further comment, the export of my favorites shows I've been to the following sites within fairly recent times, (but not necessarily recently enough to guarantee they all work).
