Winds forming words in the perennials along the pathways; birds flocking in strange patterns and the rising of strange, luminescent, mint-colored clouds of light, with no visible cause. A stirring amongst bards, a bussing of poets, and the rattling of ancient doors in the hearts of minstrels and ladies throughout the land. Looming on the horizon, a green flash that rises and falls, rich with green promise. Songwriters across the nation feel a telepathic clicking of gears and a turning of shafts in their creative mechanisms. Pencils come out of hiding and old, half-finished songs seem to come to the top of their respective stacks in private writing nooks all over Mudcatlandia. What could it mean? Only one thing....just read the signs. The portents are plain. I am telling you, folkies -- it is going to happen. Be ready......she's coming back! Regards, A |

That day, Violet sat in the misty arms of her tree, playing the taut strings of her new lute. Rich and melodic sounds flowed from them, sounds which were echoed by Violet's beautiful voice. She sang of green skies of leaf, of air rich with moisture, of drapes of bark and vine, of gum leaves dangling languidly from ghost-white trees, of invisible bush-orchids, luring with their hidden fragrance, and of crimson and blue parrots swooping across waterfalls of ferns. Indigo and Ebony listened spellbound - to a song which sounded like the rainforest, like trees breathing and mist dripping. They sat silent and still, their arms wrapped about each other, their tough old faces gazing at Violet's lovely form. And as they listened, their hair grew long and green and full of leaves, their calloused old feet grew long brown toes which stretched into the ground and took root. Their arms reached about each other, growing taller and sprouting stems and budding leaves. As Violet played, they had become two mighty trees, embracing in the middle of the ancient forest, knotted, with vast roots and soaring boughs, and dripping with leafy vines. And Violet sat beneath them, singing and weeping for her old parents, who had found their final home in the forest that they loved so much. She touched their knotted old trunks, resting her head against their side and embracing them. Memories of Indigo and Ebony flooded through her - of their wheezing laughter and the stories they used to tell in the moonlit tree. She thought of Indigo, sneaking quietly through ferny gullies, ever on the lookout for spiders. She thought of Ebony's crinkled old eyes smiling, and the wonderful way she used to croon and hoot like an old owl at the moon. She remembered them playing betting games at night with macadamia nuts - tossing them into a dirt circle drawn near the fire and squabbling over which way they rolled - winner take all. ...Through the trees came a soft calling, ebbing, flowing, now softer, now louder. The Violet Harp bird was calling from somewhere near. Violet answered with her lute-music when she thought she could hear the bird, and soon the two of them were playing a game of musical call and response, their songs echoing and rebounding back and forth to each other. With each note she played, small green figs appeared on the two interlacing trees, and as Violet plucked her answering songs to the little bird, these two entwining trees became stoutly laden with honey figs. Violet put down her lute and plucked the delicious fruits from the trees, collecting a couple of dozen and wrapping them in her indigo silk shawl. |
