Subject: RE: Rick Fielding's 'Virtual' CD Release From: Jeri Date: 13 Mar 04 - 01:48 PM I'm bringing this up again because I just got the CD last week. Borealis sent it out rather quickly, it went air mail, and it took two weeks to get here. I think pigeons could probably manage in at least half that time! It was, indeed, worth the wait. As I said somewhere before, it's the most Rick-like recording he's made. It has some heavy-duty picking songs on it, 'Houston Special' and 'Step It Up and Go'. It's got Hangman's Reel, so evocative that one can almost hear the squeak of a heavily-weighted rope swaying back and forth at the end. (If one has one's stereo cranked up pretty loud, that is.) It's got songs to make you wet both your cheeks AND your pants, and...am I the only one who thinks the recording of 'Cuckoo' is an incredibly innovative linking of the old-time American version back to its British roots? This music, as his home, is one big 'Acoustic Workshop' and I'm grateful for both...or perhaps they're one and the same. In my own mind, I'm there, and I will be, whenever I listen, and hear, and lose myself in that wonderful music. Thank you. |
Subject: RE: Rick Fielding's 'Virtual' CD Release From: GUEST,Brien Pepperdine Date: 03 Mar 04 - 02:43 PM Let us try this again. Yes I liked Paul Odegaard's music too on the March 1 Acoustic Workshop and I thank Arnie Naiman for mentioning it and spelling out the fellow's name. Otherwise I would have had to call Paul Mills for info after driving myself crazy hunting for info on "Paulo Degard" (hey, that's they way I heard it, I think I wanted the guy to seem more exotic!). (some day a playlist or mail-list of music heard on Acoustic Workshop would be nice...) Anyhow, being the equal of any kindergarden pupil I can use Google and found: http://members.rogers.com/paulodegaard/order.html So if anyone is so inclined (like me) they can get a copy of that fine music. Brien Pepperdine Toronto |
Subject: RE: Rick Fielding's 'Virtual' CD Release From: Arnie Naiman Date: 02 Mar 04 - 03:18 PM I just got the station last night when you played a cut by Paul Odegaard. I really enjoy the creative and inventive arrangements and beautiful quality of banjo playing and tunes on that CD. Mudcatters take note - get "Banjo Suite" for an enjoyable banjo listening experience - not your average run of the milll banjo CD. Arnie |
Subject: RE: Rick Fielding's 'Virtual' CD Release From: balladeer Date: 02 Mar 04 - 12:32 PM Paul: Thanks so much for playing my song on the air last night. I didn't hear it, or what you and Peter T said about it, because I was in the middle of a band practice, but thoughtful friends let me know. Balladeer |
Subject: RE: Rick Fielding's 'Virtual' CD Release From: Tinker Date: 01 Mar 04 - 05:47 PM Lane, Fielding, Paterson and Swan Lay-Abouts- at- Large Ohio Division Attention: Mr. Catspaw Paterson Dear Mr. 'Spaw: I read your post with considerable concern, and it is with a large degree of reluctant rectitude that I disregard my previous restraint and set down here, for your review, the activities of February 16th. I had attempted to exercise restraint in the telling of the tire tale, but after careful deliberation with my husband, we have agreed that 'tis better to tell the True Tale than to chance loosing the "L" in L,F,P&S: FAA. Now you may not be aware of the fact that I am not a morning person. In fact, it often takes gentle handling to arouse me early in the morning, but on that particular Toronto morning your colleague, Mr. Lane, promised a "rare treat in fine company". Imagine my emotional roller coaster as one thing lead to another and soon in true Lay-about fashion Mr. Lane was flat on his back. ( Exhibit Page 5, Photo 5) ) and I found myself with a handful of Icy Nuts !!! As I am sure you are aware, in the frigid Toronto morning, cold contractions of exposed nuts can make it difficult to get them off. Previously Mr. Big Mick had implied that I might someday be eligible for consideration of provisional Layabout status--- I thought this might be some form of field testing situation, so with great reluctance, I slowly and gently removed the nuts from the palm of my hand and let him resolve the situation personally. At no time that morning ( or elsewise during the weekend) did Mr. Lane even break a sweat. I can unequivocally testify that Mr. Lane's Lay-about-status was never endangered. Sincerely, Ms. Tinker |
Subject: RE: Rick Fielding's 'Virtual' CD Release From: Jeri Date: 01 Mar 04 - 06:46 AM Thanks, picture senders Mick and Tinker, and putter-upper Jeff. It's good to feel like I have have some sort of connection to the event. Paul, if I can listen, I will. |
Subject: RE: Rick Fielding's 'Virtual' CD Release From: Paul Mills Date: 01 Mar 04 - 12:31 AM Say What Mick? Just to let you all know, Peter T and I will be hosting Acoustic Workshop again tomorrow night. The streaming link seems to be working now - at least it did when I tried it today. Hope you can listen in. Cheers, Paul |

Subject: RE: Rick Fielding's 'Virtual' CD Release From: catspaw49 Date: 29 Feb 04 - 12:57 AM Hey Bro......Thanks for the pics of one of the strangest nights I have had in many and many a year. Someday I hope to write about it and what I had going on then, just as soon as I can figure out what it was and the words needed to express it...........Until then though, it's wonderful reading the experiences of others both there and listening in and even grander to see so many good pictures of great folks. I especially liked Tink's boots. Heather looks really wonderful as always and PT looks as though he had gas.........And Mick...that tire changing crap is gonna' cost you your position with the firm if you're not careful. Spaw |

Subject: RE: Rick Fielding's 'Virtual' CD Release From: Tinker Date: 28 Feb 04 - 05:58 PM Okay the "techie guys" from CIUT ( honest they told me that's what Engineers are called these days... ) In the Dark Blue shirt, Sam Petite and in the Yellow shirt Fred Spek. These two guys just kept quietly going about their business of solving problems with amazing speed. They got things going and then kept things running smoothly during the show. I don't know if many folks caught the reference, but when Rick first joined the show over the phone, they had three different problems which were solved in under five minutes to make that hook up work. They deserve huge thanks for helping to bring this concept to reality. And besides they are just all around nice guys. Tinker |
Subject: RE: Rick Fielding's 'Virtual' CD Release From: katlaughing Date: 28 Feb 04 - 05:05 PM Great pix, Tinker and Mick. Thanks so much! |
Subject: RE: Rick Fielding's 'Virtual' CD Release From: Backstage Manager(inactive) Date: 28 Feb 04 - 03:29 PM Nice pictures. But one of them is incorrectly captioned as "Poet, Hawkes Hood." The man's name is Holmes Hooke. |
Subject: RE: Rick Fielding's 'Virtual' CD Release From: Big Mick Date: 28 Feb 04 - 01:30 PM Thanks to our beloved Jeff, otherwise known as Pene Azul, the pictures taken by Tinker and I are in the photo section HERE. Thanks, Jeff for the hard work getting them up. I have some name corrections to make, such as Goldberg instead of Golden, but I must tell you that when one describes Eve's voice the appropriate adjective would be "golden". Wonderful singer. All the best, Mick |

Subject: RE: Rick Fielding's 'Virtual' CD Release From: Fortunato Date: 16 Feb 04 - 06:43 PM I'm signed on and streaming here in Silver Spring...CIUT is coming in loud and clear. |
Subject: RE: Rick Fielding's 'Virtual' CD Release From: Jeri Date: 16 Feb 04 - 05:48 PM I'm not sure what 'mms' stands for, but it designates they type of server. Maybe 'Microsoft Media Server'? Paul Mills posted the IP address when I complained the link on CIUT's web page didn't work. It's all in this thread someplace. |
Subject: RE: Rick Fielding's 'Virtual' CD Release From: open mike Date: 16 Feb 04 - 05:16 PM i found the main page here....http://www.ciut.fm/ tahnks for all advice, etc. trying this now...and if i pull it in perhaps can do a paltalk link! will keep you posted... |

Subject: RE: Rick Fielding's 'Virtual' CD Release From: Rustic Rebel Date: 16 Feb 04 - 04:54 PM Thanks for the URL address. I'm getting it in loud and clear. Will be tuning in tonight crossing my fingers my connection holds. Can't wait to hear the party! Best of luck to all involved. Rustic |
Subject: RE: Rick Fielding's 'Virtual' CD Release From: JenEllen Date: 16 Feb 04 - 03:54 PM Leave it to kat to propose...LOL I've tied everyone's parkas into a rope-ladder and have thrown them down the side of the building to facilitate my escape from work early. (My excuse of "I have to go home, I have something in my eye---Eyyyyye can't see any reason to be here this afternoon." didn't work as well as planned, so on to PartDeux) I'm hoping to be home in time to catch the show---y'all have fun, and we're thinking of you. |
Subject: RE: Rick Fielding's 'Virtual' CD Release From: katlaughing Date: 16 Feb 04 - 02:34 PM One other thought, if it wouldn't put a fly in the ointment...what about someone putting up a room at PalTalk and running it on there, for Mudcatters who can't get the broadcast, otherwise? It could be password protected so they wouldn't have to deal with any drop-ins, or not. Too much? Too late for an okay from Borealis, etc? Thinking out loud only.:-) |
Subject: RE: Rick Fielding's 'Virtual' CD Release From: katlaughing Date: 16 Feb 04 - 02:24 PM JetAudio likes me!**bg** Jeri, let me know, I'll call you on my anytime, anywhere in the US, one-low-all the time rate and hold the phone to my speakers if ya need me to! I could even call one other who can't get it and make it a THREE-WAY! Are you listening, Spaw?!!:-) |
Subject: RE: Rick Fielding's 'Virtual' CD Release From: Jeri Date: 16 Feb 04 - 01:48 PM John B, did you see Paul's post above? Cope this and paste it into the player you use for Windows Media: This works better than the web address, but for some reason, in my old Windows Media Player, it had to time out once. Always worked the second time, though. Hope you can get the show! |
Subject: RE: Rick Fielding's 'Virtual' CD Release From: GUEST,JohnB Date: 16 Feb 04 - 01:35 PM I can't seem to get anything working on the computer for CIUT. Will have to try the radio but generally not much hope down in the valley. Good Luck and Best Wishes anyhow. JohnB |

Subject: RE: Rick Fielding's 'Virtual' CD Release From: Duckboots Date: 16 Feb 04 - 01:08 PM All this technical stuff is way too complicated for me! Spaw, if you'd like to send a message - and don't want to sever your connection during the show - send it in this afternoon. Borealis will be collecting them and we can read them during the show. Borealis is gearing up for the big event, literally, Paul and Mick are trucking over a whole studio full of equipment! It's absolutely wonderful the way everyone has pitched in to make this happen. Thanks - it seems like a really small word, but it's from my heart. Heather |
Subject: RE: Rick Fielding's 'Virtual' CD Release From: Jeri Date: 16 Feb 04 - 12:45 PM 1 more uninstall/install, 2 more crashes Then I tried to play a CD, and it wanted to 'get information' from the internet and wouldn't let me play the CD unless I was connected...then the PROGRAM crashed. (Assignment: write a song with the burden "...and then it crashed.") Progress! I uninstalled it and I'm downloading Media Player 7.1, but I'm keeping the old dinosaur Media Player, just in case. I may end up having to call someone and asking them to hold their phone up to a speaker, but I'm gonna listen! 6 hours and 15 minutes away... |
Subject: RE: Rick Fielding's 'Virtual' CD Release From: catspaw49 Date: 16 Feb 04 - 12:30 PM Fickle doesn't begin to encompass it. I get it....I don't get it. I will be here tonite listening....if I can!!!! If I don't post, you'll know I'm listening because I'm not going to muckabout and screw the pooch!!!!!IfI'm posting,I'll be pissed because the connection went down! Paul and Mick and all.....thanks. A small word that means a lot..... Rick and Heather......much love from both Karen and I. Spaw |
Subject: RE: Rick Fielding's 'Virtual' CD Release From: Bill D Date: 16 Feb 04 - 12:11 PM awwww...sorry about that Jeri....I have no idea why it messes with you, and treats others so nicely. I sit here with my 56k modem and Win98 and get it all just fine. Ain't modern technology...ummm...fickle? |

Subject: RE: Rick Fielding's 'Virtual' CD Release From: Jeri Date: 16 Feb 04 - 11:42 AM Bill, JetAudio sucks. Just my personal opinion, but I spent eternity downloading 17.8 MB, installed it (twice now) and it's main function seems to be to crash my computer (to the point where I have to turn the power off at the surge protector). It's a shame when a TinyFlaccid product works better than something else. I shall try again and hope nothing blows up so I can revert to WiMePla. Paul & Mick, please don't strain anything schlepping. If the worst happens with the broadcast, please TAPE IT. When it comes to broadcasting this, I have faith in Paul & the Borealis Boyz. I'm off to crash my computer for the 5th time today. Hear ya later! |
Subject: RE: Rick Fielding's 'Virtual' CD Release From: Willie-O Date: 16 Feb 04 - 10:51 AM Hey, I have everything except a right rear turn signal now. Marion, please bring a red bandana you can wave out the shotgun-side window when necessary... "homemade wooden truck". hmmmph. It's a 1994 Mazda. Only the cap is, shall we say, professionally hand-crafted. I just screwed the access door shut to keep the varmints out in the big city. Where the hell are we going anyway? W-O |
Subject: RE: Rick Fielding's 'Virtual' CD Release From: Marion Date: 16 Feb 04 - 09:41 AM Hi Jeremiah. If you want to get by the bouncers, you'd best give Heather a call in advance. She told me last week that they needed to use a guest list approach to keep the numbers near the realm of physical possibility. The "Virtual Schmirtual" roadtrip in Willie-o's homemade wooden truck departs in a couple of hours, as soon as he can devise some sort of lighting system for it. Yay! Impeccable timing, as always, Fieldings, for scheduling this right after my return to Upper Canada. I am looking forward to it very much. Marion |
Subject: RE: Rick Fielding's 'Virtual' CD Release From: Peter T. Date: 16 Feb 04 - 08:23 AM Hell, Jeremiah, it will be totally packed, so what? Come on over! What is one lunatic more or less? (or listen intently!) yours, Peter T. |

Subject: RE: Rick Fielding's 'Virtual' CD Release From: GUEST,Jeremiah McCaw Date: 16 Feb 04 - 02:32 AM I would dearly love to attend in person, but I'm assuming the Borealis offices will be packed as it is. Is this a correct assumption? Paul? Anybody? It's an hour-&-a-quarter drive I'd happily make. Failing any positive response in the short time left, I shall be on the cyber-side, listening intently. (BTW, the Jet Audio that somebody recommended seems to be an excellent program.) Best wishes (& thanks) to all involved; Rick & Heather especially. |

Subject: RE: Rick Fielding's 'Virtual' CD Release From: Paul Mills Date: 15 Feb 04 - 11:16 PM Welcome to T.O., Mick! See you in the morning. Folks, Mick has kindly offered to help me schlep gear over to the Borealis office tomorrow. I've ripped out half my studio to help out with the broadcast and I'm getting too old to lug alone. Thanks, Mick. Hope y'all enjoy the show! Cheers, Paul |

Subject: RE: Rick Fielding's 'Virtual' CD Release From: GUEST,Big Mick in Toronto Date: 15 Feb 04 - 11:04 PM Finally made it in!! Long haul, not helped by Canadian immigration. I blew it when I admitted I was a folkie, which immediately put me under suspicion. Then when they asked what I was bringing in, I blew it when I admitted I had a bodhran in the car. This resulted in everything short of a strip search, but finally I convinced them that I would handle it responsibly and that I had the proper training on it so as not to be a danger, they relented and let me through. But they admonished me that they would notify the proper authorities that there was an unregistered goatskin and to keep an eye on me. I am on my best behaviour, which isn't saying much for those that know me...... I will report on the festivities and take plenty of piccies. More later. All the best, Mick |
