From: fifthdoctorfan@usa.net

i am desperatly looking for three songs... and words to any or all of them would be grand.

the first is the song I've Got A Song To Sing. Some of the lyrics are 'i've got a song to sing, oh sing me your song, oh..."

the second is a song i have no title for but some lyrics are 'as i rode out one autumn evening fair to walk with water stone and tree..."

the thrid song is also titleless as far as i know and goes, 'where have you been my dearest dear, been seven long years or more."

thank you ever so much for any help you can offer.

Terr Windkin

The first one is easy. It's in the DT - search for [moping mum].

With some minor differences in words your second request sounds like Dark Eyed Sailor which is in the database,

The first one is a Gilbert & Sullivan song from I forget which operetta.

That thrid (?) song really bugs me. I'm sure I've heard it, but I can't remember where. I searched under [seven long years] and [dearest dear]. Found lots of songs, but not the right one. Now I'm frustrated. Guess it's time to go back to work.
Oh, what's a thrid? ;-)

Subject: ADD: A YOUNG MAID STOOD IN HER FATHER'S GARDEN^^
From: Alice

Or could a thrid be something you create on the Mudcat to ask a question about a song? Sorry, Terr, for teasing you.

Could the third song be a version of "A Young Maid Stood in Her Father's Garden"?

A YOUNG MAID STOOD IN HER FATHER'S GARDEN

A young maid stood in her father's garden
A stranger came and gazed upon her
And said, "Fair lady, will you marry me?"
"It's seven years since I had a sweetheart,
And seven more since I did him see,
And seven more I'll wait upon him,
And if he's alive he'll come home to me."

"Seven years it is since you've had a sweetheart,
And seven more since you did him see,
And seven more you will wait upon him,
And perhaps that young man you ne'er will see."
" If he is sick, I wish him better,
If he is dead, I wish him rest,
But if he's alive I will wait for him,
For he's the young man I love the best."

He put a hand into his pocket,
His sinewy hands they were slim and small,
And up between them he pulled a gold ring,
And when she saw it she down did fall.
He took her up and gave her sweet kisses,
And he embraced her so tenderly,
Saying, "I am your true and loving sailor,
That came from sea for to wed with thee."

The third song sounds like a song sung by Maddy Prior (Steeleye Span) "Banks of Italy" or it could be "The Demon Lover"
