I plan to spend the evening with a much younger man who is utterly charming although short on conversation and inclined to dribble.....actually that sounds like a few of my dates *G*.

In other words, I'll be babysitting for some friends so they can have a much needed evening out together......no complaints here.

I'll be watching the snow fall, making silly (or not so silly) posts on Mudcat, practicing piano/flute/guitar/viola/diggerydoo etc, spending some time with my friend Raptor (hopefully), being extra-specially nice to myself, and dipping into the big box of WONDERFUL books my oh-so-loving friend/Reiki Master/HUNA instructor/Qigong sensei Two Bears sent me yesterday.

Oh yes, and working on changing the decidedly less-than-loving thoughts I've been sending out to the lady who was driving on the wrong side of the road yesterday, smashed into my brand-new new car head on, caused me to miss 3 of my students (including a new student scheduled for her first lesson) and then lied to the police about it. So now I not only have to pay a $500 deductible, but my insurance premiums are probably going to be upped by about 40%   :-(

Oh well, it was Friday the 13th.

(She is only human doing the best she can she is only human doing the best she can she is only human doing the best she can I totally forgive her and let it go I make mistakes too she is only human doing the best she can she is only hu ....)

THERE! All better now! Ooooo I'm just so full of it full of LOVE today huh?

Happy Valentines to all,

daylia

We're having a house concert tonight in our (Toronto) living room. Katherine Wheatley will be performing! I can't wait - she's a great songwriter with a gorgeous voice. Her songs are like good photographs, real and clear and passionate. And her hair is vivid red, which also suits the occasion.

I got to know Katherine personally a couple of years ago when she and I did voice lessons together. I'd go to her loft, and her teacher would drive in from Stratford, and teach Katherine for a half hour and me for a half hour, while we sat and listened and learned from each others' lessons. It was quite amazing and helpful to do it that way. No lessons tonight - I get to just sit and enjoy!

Michael Bolton is opening for her tonight. He is going to be singing 'Silly Songs of Love and Heartache!'. Michael is a fine amateur folkie, and a very funny amateur astronomer. (for an example of astronomical humour, see clickie: http://www.debbiecarroll.com/dcStory.html).

So, tonight we have about 40 people coming over, and a couple of nice cakes to eat during the break, and my husband and I will spend the day setting up chairs and making sure that the place looks worthy.

Any chance of appeal?

black walnut, I'm not sure ... actually I'm on my way to my insurance brokers now. The woman who hit me has the same insurance company, so this should be interesting .... her word against mine. *sigh* Oh well I hope no more debris will fall off my car on the way over.

Hey, at least I can drive it! SHe wasn't so lucky (her car is 13 years old though). My drivers door won't open, so it's REAL fun climbing over the stick shift from the passenger side -- NOT! AARRRGGHHHH ....

Anyway, I'm going to make sure to bring my cell-phone -- you're right, the roads ARE pretty bad around here, and it's still snowing. That's part of the problem -- the snowbanks are so high the roads are narrower. I had nowhere to turn to avoid her! It's hard to judge where you are on the roads when the lane-markers are are buried in snow and slush, too. And the sidestreets don't get plowed as often so they are a real mess ...

Anyway this is thread drift, so I'll quit now.

Thanks so much for caring, black walnut!

Love to all,

daylia

Daylia: Yes driving is bad when the roads are so narrow with icy snowbanks, but what I actually meant is that all the BAD DRIVERS were showing off yesterday. Illegal passes, pushy, Uturns in rush hour, no signals...all the regular stuff but somehow even more worser than usual.

Apache: MWAH is such a great word. I don't think I've ever seen it written down before.

It annoys me when people think that the new bands wrote the songs they cover, like Thin Lizzy doing Whisky In The Jar, people actually think they wrote it. Grr

Anyway, that's my rant over.

Serious cooking tonight for a "diner a deux". Figs with parma ham, organic salmon on a bed of baby braised fennel with a pernod and prawn sauce and carrots forestiere and a rather nice Oz Chardonnay/Sauvignon.
Nicest Valentine present - a ticket to a weekend of French dance.
Can we do this more than once a year?

This afternoon I'm out looking for a good digital recorder to record our local sessions since I found that the Belkin voice recorder for my iPod is so sensitive that it get's overloaded and sounds more like rock guitar than anything else!

Valentine's Day here on the mountain top has been most relaxing and enjoyable! We found a handmade card on the kitchen table from our little one, then out for a WONDERFUL breakfast, spent some time at our favorite hangout, my husband gave me a book I have been eyeing, had a nice cup of coffee and now we are home...just relaxing. Ahhhhhhhh...yes....it's the WEEKEND!!!!!!!!! Also, tonight, all three of us will be attending a bluegrass concert!

Best of all....it's just nice to have some free time at home with my family. All demands otherwise will just have to wait.

Happy Valentine's Day Everybody!

i decided to do something good for my heart, instead of sit around home
and mope about not having a valentine. I invited my daughters and their boyfriends/valentines to go on a bike ride on a path that parallels the river. after the ride we had a little picnic and then i went to the radio station and did a show featuring songs about love...true love,
falling in and out of it, unrequited love, heart aches and heart breaks.
Glad i decided to make a plan to spend the day surrounded by people who are special to me, even though there is not a valentine in my life now.

Lonesome Town
By Ricky Nelson

There's a place where lovers go
To cry their troubles away
And they call it Lonesome Town
Where the broken hearts stay
[Lonesome town]

You can buy a dream or two,
To last you all through the years
And the only price you pay
Is a heart full of tears
[Full of tears]

Goin' down to lonesome town,
Where the broken hearts stay,
Goin' down to lonesome town
To cry my troubles away.

In the town of broken dreams,
The streets are filled with regret,
Maybe down in lonesome town,
I can learn to forget.
[To forget]

Maybe down in lonesome town,
I can learn to forget,
[Lonesome town]

Saturday I attended a "visioning fair" for my community. Today I attend a meeting (rally) regarding cuts to education which will effect
our most vulnerable children "at risk"

Last night my son called (he's my only valentine at the moment) to tell me he would be in town tonight. Wants to take me out to dinner - says I'm his hero.

Left a message on his machine. Told him he was the perfect son and love him for also being the best big brother his little sister could ever wish for.

Listened to little sister's tale of a new romance.

Now I have to clean house, do the laundry and find time to sort out my taxes.

As much as I detest Hallmark hoidays, its sure nice to stop and re-affirm your love for each other and give as much as you can to make
life a little better for others.

Of course my little students gave me sweet Valentines. My favorite said, "I like the way you treat the class". Sometimes this job is soooo worth it!

A Valentine's Day monologue from Bill Maher...

NEW RULE: You can't claim you're the party of smaller government, and then clamor to make laws about love. If there's one area I don't want the U.S. government to add to its list of screw-ups, it's love.

On the occasion of this Valentine's Day, let's stop and ask ourselves: What business is it of the state how consenting adults choose to pair off, share expenses, and eventually stop having sex with each other?

And why does the Bush administration want a constitutional amendment about weddings? Hey, birthdays are important, too. Why not include them in the great document? Let's make a law that gay people can have birthdays, but straight people get more cake. You know, to send the right message to kids.

Republicans are always saying we should privatize things, like schools, prison, Social Security. OK, so how about we privatize privacy? If the government forbids gay men from tying the knot, what's their alternative? They can't all marry Liza Minnelli.

Republicans used to be the party that opposed social engineering, but now they push programs to outlaw marriage for some people, and encourage it for others. If you're straight, there's a billion-five in the budget to encourage and promote marriage, including seed money to pay an old Jewish woman to call up people at random and say, "So why aren't you married, Mr. Big Shot?"

But when it comes to homosexuals, Republicans sing "I Love You Just the Way You Ought to Be." They oppose gay marriage because it threatens or mocks or does something to the sanctity of marriage. As if anything you can do drunk out of your mind in front of an Elvis impersonator in Las Vegas could be considered sacred. Half the people who pledge eternal love are doing it because one of them is either knocked-up, rich or desperate, but in George Bush's mind, marriage is only a beautiful lifetime bond of love and sharing. Kind of like what his dad has with the Saudis.

But at least the right wing aren't hypocrites on this issue. They really believe that homosexuality, because it says so in the Bible, is an abomination and a dysfunction that's curable. They believe that if a gay man just devotes his life to Jesus, he'll stop being gay -- because the theory worked out so well with the Catholic priests.

But the greater shame in this story goes to the Democrats, because they don't believe homosexuality is an abomination, and therefore their refusal to endorse gay marriage is a hypocrisy. The right are true believers, but the Democrats are merely pretending that they believe gays are not entitled to the same state-sanctioned misery as the rest of us. The Democrats' position doesn't come from the Bible; it's ripped right from the latest poll, which says that most Americans are against gay marriage.

Well, you know what? Sometimes most Americans are wrong!

Where's the Democrat who will stand up and go beyond the half measures of civil union and "hate the sin, love the sinner," and say loud and clear: "There IS no sin, and homosexuality is NOT an abomination"? Although that Boy George musical Rosie O'Donnell put on comes close. The only thing abominable about being gay is the amount of time you have to put in at the gym.

But that aside, the law in this country should reflect that some people are just born one hundred percent outrageously, fabulously, undeniably Fire Island gay, and that they don't need re-programming.

They need a man with a slow hand.

Happy Valentine's Day everybody!

daylia,

I sumpathize. I, also, had a car problem on Friday the 13th. Somehow, my new car managed to locate a metal spike approximately 10 inches long lying on the road, hit it, & throw it into the air in such a way that it impaled the bottom of my car! Thankfully, it hit in a non-vital area. Only lost us about 1 1/2 hrs & a service call to a tow truck.

Valentine's Day was much better. Went to NYC to a Broadway showing of Rent with my sweetheart & my older son. Rent is a fantastic show!

best,

Eeks bbc ... glad you're okay, and the damage wasn't too bad. I've impaled a car too, also a new one, running over a crowbar that had just fallen off the pickup truck in front of me.   :-(

And my mom reminded me yesterday that her last car was totalled in an accident where the other driver was at fault ... on Friday the 13th!

Curiouser and curiouser. So curious I'm gonna go way way WAY out on a limb and suggest maybe there's a collective "pool" of psychic energy, or power, generated when a lot of people are feeling, thinking, imagining, talking about negative fearful superstitious things at the same time, in the same place, over the course of a day.

If so, maybe that pool of energy affects some people negatively, causing them to be "ungrounded", klutzy, accident-prone, to behave in uncharacteristic ways etc. Like the Full Moon.

AT any rate, sounds like Fri the 13th proved to be quite the "Prelude to Valentine's Day" for a few of us this year! Thanks bbc for sharing your story.

It's a commercial rip off. I've never indulged and this year I told Manitas that I didn't want anything. And at £40 (about $70-80) for a bunch of red roses, I'm not sure he didn't feel the same! Besides, I like my roses white.

In the end he bought me some Belgian chocolates (unsolicited but yummy) and the DVD of 'League of Extraordinary Gentlemen' starring Sean Connery. Half the price and a much longer lifespan! I daresay he would have bought it anyway.

What is it with this attitude that you are nothing unless you get a bit of card with some sickly sentiment and a bit of fluff on it, sent by someone so inconsiderate as to not sign their name? How the hell are you expected to reciprocate if you don't know who sent it. Most courts would consider that 'stalking' behaviour.

And to reply to a previous post - why should it just be one day? The answer is, it shouldn't. If you love someone enough to spend vast amounts of money for just one day, then you shouldn't have to confine it to just that one day. If you love someone that much, you should tell them with words or gestures ANY and EVERY day of the year.

I've always considered the sending of shopbought Valentines fairly offensive. It's jumping on the bandwagon and sending something because you feel it SHOULD be done because everyone else is doing it. If you want to show someone your feelings, make it special and do it on a day that isn't set aside by Commerce to make money. You should do these things because you WANT to do them, not because you feel you ought to.

Call me a grumpy old fart, but in my day it was called SAINT Valentine's Day, and we didn't wish people Happy Valentine's Day but asked / begged/ implored "Be my Valentine"

I feel better now.

My husband spent 30p on me.
A bag of Malteesers!
With a bit of imagination, a game of hide and seek and a sheepskin rug we both had the best valentines day ever!
I am begging for a box next year!

I awoke on Valentines Day after about 3 hours sleep with a monumental hangover and immediately regretted the joke card I had bought Geoff which played 'You're the one that I want' when opened, especially when the twins got hold of it and played it non stop until I threatened to stick it down the portaloo in the caravan we were all in! The day got better when I was called upon the handfast Magician nad Gillie - not sure if the shaking was nerves or DTs though! Still it turned into a lovely day whatever.

Sonnet 14/02/04                            DCCCLXXVIII

I build my muse a castle, stone by stone,
Each line another facet of desire.
Yet words are monument to dream alone:
The thought of her smile all of hopes inspire.
I send my muse my hopes, to share a night
That moon and muse illuminate, or win
A kiss and smile: She is enough of light
To bring dawn to my heart, and spring begin.
I offer muse my heart, but know I give
Nothing she does not have. What can I share
To winter's chill remove? Should I dreams live,
To try to show my muse how much I care?
She is my truth, my light: What can I say
To tell how she remains in mind, today?

Funny how there are now St Patricks' day cards available but no 'Happy St George's Day' or St David's day or St Andrew's day cards.
