"It is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship or a Parliament or a Communist dictatorship... voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country."

Hermann Goering, From a conversation with psychologist Gustave Gilbert while jailed at Nuremburg on the evening of 18 April 1946, documented in Gilbert's book "Nuremburg Diary.

Sound familiar? Junior and Tony know this too well.

Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it
The rest of us just study up and figure out how to treat it

The only truth is that we are in a constant state of change. Flexibility is the key to survival.

Somebody should be famous for saying that.

"Somebody should be famous for saying that."

Lao Tse came pretty close and Heracleitus came close too; he said that "everything flows" and "you can't step into the same river twice."

And I just found out that
"Cratylus...reproached Heraclitus for saying that you cannot step into the same river twice—for he himself thought you could not do so even once."

ain't scholarship wonderful?

As we know,
There are known knowns.
There are things we know we know.
We also know
There are known unknowns.
That is to say
We know there are some things
We do not know.
But there are also unknown unknowns,
The ones we don't know
We don't know.

Heard about an old cowboy who was asked his views on life by the local paper. He was over a hundred years old and had been one of the "original" pioneers in the area. This is supposed to be his response.

"There's three kindsa folks. There're them that learns about mistakes from books and from other folks and learns from 'em; they's about 2% of the people. And then there's them folks that learns from their own mistakes; they're about 3% of the folks. The rest of us jist keep pissin' in our boots."

The paper didn't print the interview.
