Subject: Obit: We killed the dog From: GUEST Date: 16 Mar 04 - 01:45 PM We had to put Chuckles, our loving, spaniel/terrier cross down this morning. Only six years old, Chuckles had lung cancer caused by our second hand smoke. Like most smokers, we never really gave second hand smoke much thought. We're very ashamed and very sorry for the suffering we caused to a pet that we loved. |

Subject: RE: Obit: We killed the dog From: KateG Date: 16 Mar 04 - 02:39 PM My condolences on your loss, it's never easy to lose a member of the family, no matter how many feet/paws they walk on. On a slightly bossy note, I hope his loss will inspire you all to stop putting each other at risk from the same ailment. And that way you'll have the energy to take his sucessor on long fast walks, sing him/her to sleep, and taste the goodies that you share with him/her for the ten to fourteen years a dog should live. (My Rottie bitch is particularly fond of good cheese, carrots, and vanilla ice cream....or whatever I'm eating at the moment as long as it's not an orange.) |

Subject: RE: Obit: We killed the dog From: SueB Date: 16 Mar 04 - 03:03 PM I think it's curious. Clearly First Guest feels horrible about what happened, takes responsibility for it, isn't trying to rationalize or make excuses. Our response? Let's see if we can make 'em feel even worse! I do know some people, Guest, who have not been able to quit smoking no matter how hard they've tried, but I quit smoking myself, and I'd be happy to give you whatever support I can if you want to as well. I used the patch. It's what finally worked, for me. I read a study a long time back that said it takes most people an average of seven tries before they finally quit smoking. If at first you don't succeed, try, try again, and all that. I'm sorry for the loss of your friend. Suzanne |
Subject: RE: We killed the dog From: Amos Date: 16 Mar 04 - 03:05 PM It was the hardest damn thing I ever had to do, and seven tries is about right. But I got it done at last. I support anyone making the same effort. A |
Subject: RE: We killed the dog From: SueB Date: 16 Mar 04 - 11:42 PM How did you do it, Amos? Patches, gum, herbs, hypnosis, acupuncture, really good drugs, peer pressure, willpower? The first time I quit was after having my wisdom teeth out - it went badly and they gave me some lovely pills - Percodan? Percoset? - and told me not to smoke. Lovely pills, I didn't even care that I couldn't have a cig. Started smoking again after a couple of months, I think. I was in my mid-twenties, had been smoking since I was 15. |
