Gartan Mother's Lullaby
[probably Gartan in county Donegal, Ireland; birthplace of Colm Cille, St Columba]
Sleep o babe, while the red bee hums
The distant twilight falls
Aoibheal from the grey rocks comes
To wrap the world in thrall
A leanbhan o, my child, my joy,
My love and heart's desire
The cricket sings his lullaby Beside the dying fire

Dusk is drawn and the green man's thorn
Is wrapped with rings of fog
Sheevra sails his boat till morn upon the fiery[?] bog
A leanbhan o, the paley moon is rimmed with cusps of dew
and weeps to hear the sad sleep song
I sing o babe to you.

according to this thread , the author is Joseph Campbell. You'll get info. there on the mythological creatures mentioned in the song. I don't know why someone refreshed it yesterday without putting a link in this thread. "Fiery" should be "starry"

Rob, the correct spelling is GARTAN MOTHER'S LULLABY, Gartan with two "a's". The word is not Evil, it's the name of a banshee that sound similar to evil, but rather is a Gaelic name. For music, lyrics, and a description of what the words mean, go to my website here -> Gartan Mother's Lullaby -click here

To get the words, just click on Alice's link in her post above, dated 22 May 2000. "Gartan" is Irish for (little) garden and refers to Lough (Loch) Gartan in Donegal. The song was ritten in 1904 by Joseph Campbell of Belfast, who died in 1944.

Hi Alice, the links to the 4 music pages are dead. I guess that this is not so much of an issue if the tune has been harvested already at Mudcat. Do you know please if this has been done?

Regards, John

The Gartan Mother's Lullaby
lyrics by Seosamh MacCathmhaoil (Joseph Campbell)
(lyrics modified slightly below by me - this is the way I sing it.)

Sleep O babe, while the red bee hums the evening twilight's fall,
Aoibheall from the grey rock comes, to wrap the world in thrall.
A leanbhan O, my child, my joy, my love, my heart's desire,
The cricket sings his lullaby, beside the dying fire.

Dusk is drawn and the Green Man's thorn is wreathed in rings of fog,
Siabhra sails his boat till dawn, across the starry bog.
A leanbhan O, the paley moon hath rimmed her cusp in dew,
And weeps to hear the sad, sweet tune, I sing my love, to you.

Faintly sweet doth the chapel bell, ring o'er the valley dim,
Tearmann's peasant voices swell, in fragrant evening hymn.
A leanbhan O, the low bell rings, my little lamb to rest,
And angel-dreams till morning sings, its music in your breast.

Aoibheall - (EE-val) : the name of the queen of the northern fairies
leanbhan - (LYAN-van) : little child, baby
Tearmann - (CHAR-uh-muhn) : sanctuary, refuge; name of village near Lough Gartan
Siabra - (SHEE-vra) : a prankster of the fairies, also spelled Shefro or Siofra.

The lyrics convey a rather "Christian" message. The early verses paint the pagan tradition as dark and foreboding, while the final verse apparently makes everything serene and secure.

I usually use the Corries' melody and omit the final verse -- in fact, I've never heard anyone else sing it. The original words include "sad sleep-tune," "brimmed" instead of "rimmed," "crickets sing you" -- the other changes I've made are inconsequential.

I believe I use only two chords to play this song on the guitar; I'd appreciate it if others could provide their favorite chords for it.

I had them worked out and I'll see if I can find where they were written down. A bit tricky in places.

As I look at what I wrote above, I realize that I play it somewhat differently now, closer to the original lyrics, but a bit switched around. I've posted the lyrics with the chords, here.

@Alice: That's right, just two. It's not exactly the Corries' arrangement, but it's close, and it works for guitar. If I can I'll record it and post it.
