would somebody tell me why men wear belts with suspenders or suspenders with belts, whichever you prefer - they both do the same thing don't they?

I don't think I've ever seen anyone actually wear both, though I on occasion enjoy using the term "belt and suspenders" to signify that I've done something twice, in two different formats, to be sure that the job gets done one way or the other.

It's not quite in the same league as wearing socks with sandals.

Stop their trousers falling down if either breaks, hence the expression 'belt and braces':-)

Suspenders in UK English refers to a piece of ladies lingery and if a guy is wearing both in the UK then he has something to hide. Or maybe not if he wears them outside!

I think socks with sandles is OK so long as you also wear a knotted hanky on your head;-)

reason I ask - a gentleman at work was wearing both ( suspenders on the outside) - he's an english fellow - always a crisp dresser - but how odd to wear both -

Possibly the suspenders are to hold up the trousers while the belt holds other things: belt knife, light meter, ohmmeter, keychain, etc.?

Trousers are often made with buttons for braces and belt loops. Men in UK used to wear individual sock suspenders.

It depends on whether one is talking about dress attire or casual.

Trousers usually come with belt loops. There is something not-completely-dressed about exposed belt loops with dress wear so one normally wears a belt even if also wearing suspenders (braces). I would never wear dress pants without a belt unless they were made without belt loops (and I'd never buy a pair that didn't have belt loops).

Jeans are another matter. If wearing suspenders with jeans a belt is redundant.

I wear socks with sandles and the reason before anyone says anything rude and just daft is because I have sweaty feet, and during the hot weather the sweat like nothing on earth, and then they stick to the leather insole of the sandle(bare feet) so that's why I wear socks with sandles just to make my feet just the wee bit comfortable.

And I'm not English either I'm Scottish and proud.

I suspect people who think it's odd to wear suspenders with a belt don't really need either of them.

I wear suspenders because I need them. My pants would fall down without them. Sometimes the belt is just for appearance, because empty belt loops look silly.

But my favorite brand of suspenders, made by Perry Products, Inc., can't work without a belt.

Belt and Braces, Belt and suspenders, Belt and galusses.

Suspenders hold up the pants. The belt is there to hold in an expamding gut or because pants with out a belt just don't look right.

My fathers friend John Paul once met me coming out of the post office. I was wearing both at the time. He said to me, "Donald, a man who wears suspenders is a traditionalist, a man who wears a belt is at best a modernist. But a man who would wear both is clearly a reactionary and damned in his fathers eyes."

I thanked him and left.

Richard - if all you want to do is borrow them - I'm sure that Essex Girl will lend you one of her suspender belts - possibly even the stockings and knickers to go with them. Why don't you make the wearing of Stockings and Suspenders a condition of entry to your BBQ - well at least for the women !

An older gentleman I know wears both. The belt keeps his shirt(s) tucked in and the suspenders keep his trousers from dropping. With the tendency to fill his pockets with things he needs handy, wear a diaper, layer clothing, I can see the practicality. Besides, older guys don't always care what younger folk think of their appearance, particularly when it's based on stupid presuppositions and style bias.

In the infantry we couldn't do without both. In the trouser pockets we had a part of the anti-nuclear gear, first aid kit, and field cutlery. On the belt we had combat knife, ammo pouches for 90 rounds 7,62 mm, small pack for food and heating gear with canteen, and the entrenchment tool. Under the field jacket we needed suspenders to keep the trousers up, over the field jacket the belt was suspended by the webbing, where the backpack could be hooked in.

Belts and suspenders were generally worn by the wandering Boers, if we can trust J. Michener in his book "The Covenant".
