Subject: RE: BS: Revolting People From: GUEST,Keit A o Hertford working Date: 28 May 04 - 09:54 AM I liked it. There has been some good comedy on R4 lately. A series about Cornish smugglers. A one off last Thurs about a news station without any news. A couple of years back Andy Hamilton did a series set in Hell. Keith. |
Subject: RE: BS: Revolting People From: Leadfingers Date: 28 May 04 - 04:44 PM Revolting People is a very funny show but Andy Hamiltons's Devil series was a LOT better . |
Subject: RE: BS: Revolting People From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 28 May 04 - 09:25 PM "My Lord, the peasants are revolting!" "Yes, I know!" |
Subject: RE: BS: Revolting People From: JennyO Date: 28 May 04 - 10:20 PM This reminds me of an old Allan Sherman song "You went the wrong way old King Louie". The last few lines go: You came the wrong way Old King Louie. Now we must put you on the shelf. That's why the people are revolting, 'cause Louie, You're pretty revolting yourself! |
Subject: RE: BS: Revolting People From: fat B****rd Date: 29 May 04 - 02:17 PM Always makes me laugh, as does Mr. Hamilton on the News Quiz. |
Subject: RE: BS: Revolting People From: GUEST Date: 29 May 04 - 04:44 PM Its now in its third series and getting a bit past its sell by date to my mind. |
Subject: RE: BS: Revolting People From: Strick Date: 29 May 04 - 04:50 PM I"M OFFENDED (actually it sounds pretty funny). |
Subject: RE: BS: Revolting People From: YorkshireYankee Date: 29 May 04 - 09:48 PM Agree with you, Leadfingers... "Old Harry's Game" was brilliant -- one of the best series I've ever heard. "Revolting People" doesn't come close (unfortunately), despite the fact that it features some extremely funny & talented actors/comedians: in addition to Andy H (of course!) there's Jay Tarses (probably best remembered for his recurring role on Murphy Brown as the sleazy talk-show host she dated at one point) and Hugh Dennis. IMHO, the plot & the humour on RP are *far* too predictable & a bit contrived (although every now & then Andy Hamilton's character says something that does make me laugh). This is one of those series that ought to be a *lot* better than it actually is, given the people involved. (BTW, I'm afraid I feel the same way about the Cornish smugglers series as well -- you can see just about every joke & plot development coming a mile off... For me, something's funny if it makes me see or think about something in a way that hasn't occurred to me before, or makes a new & interesting connection between things. Cliches, stereotypes & tired old jokes with punchlines you can figure out well before the actors say 'em are just not all that entertaining...) Cheers, YY |
Subject: RE: BS: Revolting People From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 29 May 04 - 11:10 PM A British sitcom worth watching is "Gimme Gimme" - theme tune the ABBA song - in a different style. I liked "Cheltenham 123" - but we haven't seen it for ages. I also loved the wonderful one about the British Gym Manager (played by the Red Dwarf Hologram Guy - name escapes me!)... the ABC only played the series twice - repeated once at midnight and won't repeat it. Also another 'oncer' in Australia was the one about "Lucky Chance" played by an actor who is now very famous. Robin |
Subject: RE: BS: Revolting People From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 30 May 04 - 04:47 AM The Brittas Empire, Robin. The Red Dwarf Hologram Guy was Kryton (a pun on 'The Admirable Crichton' where the butler takes charge of his employers after a shipwreck) but that's the easy bit - the name of the actor who played him is the difficult bit and it escapes me too. I'll ask Mrs. Johnny when she's out of bed! J :0) |
Subject: RE: BS: Revolting People From: YorkshireYankee Date: 30 May 04 - 09:00 AM Robert Llewelyn... had a chance to hear him speak earlier this year; not surprisingly, he was extremely entertaining. YY |
Subject: RE: BS: Revolting People From: Long Firm Freddie Date: 31 May 04 - 06:13 AM Actually the Hologram Guy character in Red Dwarf was Rimmer, played by Chris Barrie, and it was he who played Brittas. LFF |

Subject: RE: BS: Revolting People From: Herga Kitty Date: 31 May 04 - 02:58 PM Cheltenham 123 - set during the Roman occupation of Britain - was the first series I remember involving Neil Pearson. He then went on to appear (as Dave) in the sublime Drop the Dead Donkey (partly written by Andy Hamilton). Hat Trick Productions have given us some great stuff. Kitty |
Subject: RE: BS: Revolting People From: Blowzabella Date: 31 May 04 - 10:06 PM Wasn't it Chelmsford 123? I remember Rory McGrath was in it |
Subject: RE: BS: Revolting People From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 31 May 04 - 10:48 PM Sorry, Chelmsford 123... |
Subject: RE: BS: Revolting People From: GUEST,purplewitch Date: 25 Jun 04 - 09:07 AM The brittas empire chriss barries lesure centre series. bring back cheltenham 123 . |
Subject: RE: BS: Revolting People From: HuwG Date: 25 Jun 04 - 09:59 AM In addition to co-writing Drop the Dead Donkey, Andy Hamilton also played tyhe hapless outside broadcast cameraman, Jerry. Of course, being behind the camera, we never actually saw him, we just heard his unique voice screaming "Damien !" as whatever fate befell him. (Damien Day, played equally well by Stephen Tompkinson, was the suicidally reckless reporter.) "Old Harry's Game" was quite a hit too. It featured "Drop the Dead Donkey" veteran, David Swift, as the voice of God, and also starred James Grout and Jimmy Mulville. |
