Hey Mick,

If it was a heart attack, let me cheer you up by saying you CAN get through these things. I've had two — the last one 16 years ago. It'll definitely slow you down for a bit, but from what I can gather about the pace of your life, that may not be a bad thing.

Just do what the docs and common sense tells you and I'm sure you'll be fine.

Then I want to hear you sing again....

cheers,

david

Hope by now someone has relayed the DO NOT FRET message I sent you about that other matter. It's all in God's hands. Yeah-- the Big Guy. Bigger'n you, and has the potato to prove it. Let Him run the show for awhile, OK?

erg; take care so you can get out and do what you do come the election. and let your friends tie you down then so you don't overdo it.

doctors can do amazing things these days but an ounce of prevention and all that.

YOu must be a pro at it by now...practice up!
Ask the docs about Co-Q-10, it is supposed to
improve circulation--what say they?

So you're bored already and going after the teeny-boppers huh? Well, that's good.....everyone needs a hobby. It's challenging too because it's never one of them but some old crone who says, "Are we ready for our bath?"........ and the guy in the next bed who is 93, blind, deaf, and comatose, gets the bath from the hot nurse.

BTW, El Swanno is right.......Hospital time does not count.....Get on with the business! Do you realize how many hours Fielding has rung up since he joined the immortals? We are all way behind him in billable layabout hours this year so take advantage of the hospital time!

For actively doing nothing within a specialty (sailing, flying, etc.) our rates are 2000/day. For doing nothing in no special circumstance we get 2500/day. For doing nothing with no goal in mind we get 5000/day and for planning periods of nothingness for you to hire us to do taht nothing, we get 10,000/day. If you just want to discuss the concept of doing nothing as a potential future idea, then we'll need to see a credit report and get some other financial details.

Talked to Mick awhile ago and he sounds good. Tests look good and hopefully he'll be out and about soon.

How about you cognescenti letting the rest of us in on these mysteries surrounding our old friend. Progress reports welcome.

Hey, Mick, I just saw this. Man, musta scared you a bit, but you're here and going to be fine. I like this world with you in it, so you watch out with the nurses. No use getting shot by a jealous husband at this point. Make that your goal when you're ninety-six, OK? I am thinking of you and praying for your complete recovery. I haven't listened to you in person yet, and from all I've read on the 'cat, it's something a guy has to do, ya know? Hang tough, friend.

Good, Lord, Mick! You scared the life out of me. When I saw Jeri's post I knew something was really wrong because I knew that there wasn't much that would keep you away from Rick's memorial. Boy, I sure wish I could have been there. Caroline was supposed to give you a hug from me and ask you why you have not answered the 5/27 e-mail I sent you. Did you get it?

I trust you are in good hands and well on the way to mending. After all we have to go to Cracker Barrel after the Getaway!

Hope to hear from you just as soon as you are able. You have my thoughts and my love. Please take care of yourself.

Get well fast, you scruffy old Irishman, or we'll have to take serious measures.

Okay this is the Big Mick semi-dictated (I can't type that fast) health update. Please excuse all grammar and spelling errors they are clearly mine.

While Mick was on stage Friday night with his band, he thought he was having an arythmia attack. Since they run in his family he didn't get overly concerned. But within a couple hours it was clear that this was different and he was in trouble. Now he told the ER Doctor that he absolutely had to be on the road for Toronto in a couple of hours, BUT it actually was a Heart Attack. It was caught early and treated right and no one is to worry about that.
It was not caused by static blockage, the heart muscle was/is? collapsing the vein. He will probably need a stint put in, but before they decide on the appropriate treatment Mick is spending a few days Patiently going through an entire battery of tests and invasive proceedures. Today's joy was the radioactive stress test.

He truely appreciates all thoughts and good prayers,as well as the phone calls from great friends like Mudcatter... He could be in for several more days.

I'll PM address info to anyone who wants it.

Love is sent to all

tinker

He's got his guitar in the hospital, and was playing when I called. I also gave him the name of the police sergeant who located him for us. Presumably, Mick is happy about that. He says everyone at the hospital is taking great care of him

A certain message was passed on, and everything's OK.

I thought I had better check in. This will be brief as I must rest, but I wanted to thank you all for you kind thoughts and prayers. More than you know, they were needed and felt.

It is a little disconcerting to be standing on a stage in front of a thousand folks or so and have this come on. I managed to finish the performance, but it was touchy for a bit.

First off, thanks to the Mudcat Five for tracking me down. Ladies and Gentlemen, I would caution you against pissing off these women. They can and will track you down no matter where you are ..... LMAO.

There I was, laying in the bed, hooked up to every conceivable kind of monitor, two IV's Y'ed in one arm, and another in the other arm, weak, and futilely trying to fend off the ministrations of a bevy of beautiful young nurses, when the telephone rings and I hear the wonderful Scottish voice on the other end saying "This is Heather", followed by a chorus of giggles and laughs in the background. Then came the description of how they tracked me down, followed immediately by the klaxon horns and various other alarms on my monitors as my respiration became labored, my heart rate flew up, and my blood pressure went off the map, all due to the laughing I was doing. Whatever dark thoughts and self pity I had at that moment went right out the window, as I chuckled. My spirits were lifted immensely by these very special friends, and I love each of them dearly.

Quick report and then I must go lay down. My time here over the next few days will be limited, and I pray you will be a bit understanding with me.

I had a heart attack. It was not caused by a static blockage (such as plaque), but rather by a dynamic blockage. This simply means, in this case, that the beating of the heart muscle itself was collapsing a vein and causing the problem. There is some small amount of disease in a very small blood vessel, but that is very minor. I may yet have to have a stent to prevent this from happening again. There appears to be very little, if any, permanent damage. I was in Atrial fibrillation until Sunday at about 5:30 PM when they finally restored sinus rythm. I am a lucky man. I have been through a stress EKG with radioactive markers (fascinating technology), a cardiac catheterization, and every other friggin' test that you can imagine. It seems that my diastolic has elevated to an unacceptable level, and we are on that. I am down from 305 lbs (what is that, almost 22 stone) to 228 lbs. (16 stone?), and the Doctor says he would like another 20 lbs off. OK, we can do that. I am on a plethora of drugs, and we will wean from them as this passes. For the next two weeks I am to do very little, and then as much as I feel I can.

Bottom line, my friends, is that I am a lucky man. With luck, breaking a couple of very bad habits, and some work to get back into the type of shape I have been in most of my life, I will make a full recovery. Those that know me well, know that if will is part of the equation, I will pass that muster.

On to the most important thing. I want you to know that I felt, and feel, your love and good wishes. You have no idea how gratifying it was to receive calls and messages from all of you. My wife was monitoring this thread, and gave me regular updates, including my dear friend Don Meixner's joke. Thanks a shitload, buddy, you damn near sent me back into A Fib..... LOL. The thing is that when one looks at the names, realizes the friends (met and as yet unmet) he has made, well, it is a humbling experience at a time like this. When I didn't know if this would turn out well, it made the thought of travelling on a bit easier. I value you each of you more than you can know.

With love, and wishes for all the best,

Mick

He was lying on the couch as he usually is watching Nascar last Sunday and my niece wasn't home. So my sister in law told me she went over to him and hiked her leg up on the couch over him and said "Ya want some a this, sweety?"... my dumb-ass brother says, "I don't think so...look what it did to your underwear!"

I am so grateful for all the good wishes here, by telephone, and by mail. It is a humbling experience to go through an event like this. But it is significantly eased by the love and good thoughts I have received from all of you.

I am feeling fine, and walking every day. While I am not supposed to do any lifting, I did manage to power wash the sidewalk down to the lake last night. I was very careful and paying very close attention to the signals the old body was giving me. I will see the Doctor in a week for an echocardiogram, and will know more then.

To all of you that have sent personal notes, cards, etc, please be patient for a response. I will get to each and every one of you as I can. Between naps, that is ..... LOL. I don't do this "sick" thing very well. I am used to just getting up and going at it each and every day. But those that are keeping an eye on me are making sure that I do precisely what I am supposed to .... while I am in their sight, that is. hahahahha. Seriously, I am doing just as the Doctor ordered and will continue to.

But .... reading GWB's comments about Bill Clinton yesterday almost sent me back into Super Ventricular Tachycardia. LOL.

All the best,

Mick

Hugs and healthy thoughts Big Mick! Glad to hear you're on the mend!

Seems this is a bad month for tickers...my father was released from the hospital this morning after going in Wednesday with a mild heart attack. Luckily, it takes much more than a little blockage to fell a big heart like yours or my dad's.

Hope you'll be able to make the Getaway...I know that crisp, fresh Ramblewood air does wonders for the health!

Hey Mick, the wife and I are very happy to hear you are improving and gaining attitude again. Here is a short story for you to consider:

A lovely, elderly lady had suffered some minor memory problems after her heart attack. One morning she looked out her back window to see an elephant standing amongst the vegetables in her garden.

She had no idea what kind of animal it was, so she called 911 and told the dispatcher that a large gray animal was plucking her cabbages with its tail.

The dispatcher asked what the animal was doing with the cabbages. With wonder in her voice, the dear sweet lady said, "Oh you are just not going to believe it when I tell you!"

Get well soon, my friend, I look forward to seeing you at the Getaway.

Mike

Mick,

Everything I want to say gets kind of stuck, have erased this twice already. Just want you to be well, and to for heaven's sake no matter how dreary it is some days, do what they tell you to take care of yourself. ... Even if it means you might miss the Getaway for some reason, which is about as unselfish a wish as I can send! But be well, and if loving prayers and good wishes and healing thoughts sent in your direction mean anything, you should be in pretty good shape by this time.

Love,
Rita F

Does this mean he can no longer lay about at large? Allan is here and we called Mick last night. He sounds a little weary but very glad to be around (given the alternative - Kendall's line). The doctor wants him to lose MORE weight. Before it's over he will have to change his name to Little Mickaeline.

Oh dear!! Hold everything!! Littlus Mickus? No, no, no!!! That won't do at all!! He's much too big in our minds, if not his own, to change his name. We'll just have to change our standards ("Yes, dear, this really is six inches....") so he can lay claim to large numbers, if in slightly shrunken units.... As for losing weight, just make sure not to lose any of the important stuff...

Rita .... I WILL be at the Getaway. This is going to be one to remember, and I intend to be part of that memory. I will give you all an update after my meeting with the Cardiologist on Wednesday, but I feel fine and the prognosis is very upbeat.

Love to all,

Mick

Just a quick update for you good folks. I have received a number of PM's, so I thought I would post it here.

I was mistaken as to the purpose of the appointment on the Wednesday just past. It was simply a checkup, plus a modification on the meds. I cornered the Doc and asked for a little more specificity as to what I can and cannot do. I still can't lift heavy weights (and he warned me before I could say a word about the old "going to the bathroom" joke, gotta love a Rugby playing Cardiologist...LOL)but other than that, I am free to do whatever I feel I can. The weight restriction is a precautionary move, in the event that there was a spontaneous laceration of the dynamically blocked blood vessel. They want to make sure it is healed.

He indicated that I can resume my musical career, which was the best news. But he did say that should I have another heart attack I am NOT to finish my set. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Fat chance.

The drug they had to modify is called Coreg and it is some kind of wonder drug that actually strengthens the heart. They incrementally increase the dosage until one is up to 25 mg twice a day. I am halfway there already.

Overall the prognosis is very good, and I am playing a gig tomorrow night. I will be having that echocardiogram next month. I will let you all know how it goes.

Most importantly I want to tell you all how much I appreciate the concern that this community has shown me. I had seen it many times before, but not experienced it in such a profound way as I did this time. Pretty humbling.

All the best,

Mick

dang, Mick,

I know life goes on without me, but I would never have missed out on this "mudcat get well card" on purpose. I found out that you can filter the entire BS section of Mudcat, so my settings have been set that way for several months now. So I never noticed this thread until I wanted to post my latest bit of nonsense.

Best wishes!

John

Quick note here Dude........The coreg is great stuff but can make you a bit drowsy.....moreso than most other heart meds. It's mainly a BP med combined with the added benefits of a blocker and does indeed protect the heart. Good stuff

The other thing you might ask about.......Although I know you don't seem to have a cholesterol problem, several of the cholesterol meds like Pravachol have an even better additional benefit in that they have been found to significantly reduce second heart attacks. There is some disagreement on this but several top guys agree it does. I take Pravachol and had never had a problem with cholesterol but what with the aorta problem and all, it seemed a good idea to an entire group of cardiac docs here.

Just a thought.........

I had the echocardiogram yesterday, and it went very well. I now have no restrictions. Heart function is back to normal. I remain on a pretty significant drug regimen, but that is more precautionary than anything. The Doc sez that if I do what I am supposed to, within a year I could be off these things altogether. The blood pressure is still somewhat elevated and I am working on that. I am walking about 3 to 5 miles a day, and I figure by January that will have done the trick on the BP. We will see.

Music is in full swing once more. I love this cardiologist. He clearly loves music, as he spends the first 10 minutes asking me a million questions about it. When I described playing the Uilleann Pipes, his response was, "No fucking way!". Got to love a Doctor like that ......... hahahahahahaha.

A million thanks to all who PM, email, and phone. I feel your caring thoughts and prayers.

All the best,

Mick

Such good news. So happy for you, Mick. It's great you found that doctor.
I went to see a new doctor the other day and he greeted me in the waiting room with a little skippity dance routine. Not a common sight in rural Australia. Makes all the difference. Cheers Joy
