Oh, how would Hyancinth Bucket (pronounced Bookay) love that!!!

Sheridan would be sqirming in embarassment at his mother wearing her OBE to every candlelight supper!

It's well deserved, she's done so much that never got her the recognition that Hyacinth did, but is much more worthy of recognition.

It's supposed to be Patricia Routledge - I wondered why it looked funny! Penelope Routledge must be really confused now, because she's a writer on feminism!

Oh, and it was a CBE she got (same as John Hurt) - a notch up on an OBE, which she'd already got. But what the hell? Os, Cs... they're all the same on jOhn's keyboard!

It's a way of bestowing the Queen's (or King's, whichever the case may be) favour on a distinguished subject that doesn't involve giving them any land.

Either that or it's an Out of Body Experience... :-)

Penelope Rutledge is reputed to have an excellent body and be very well-grounded, so I think that the Order of the British Empire is more likely in her case.

Once saw Patricia do an Alan Bennett monologue about a woman with cancer going through the last few months of her life.
It started with the woman in denial of the disease, then her gradual acceptance, although never admission to the audiance.
One of the finest performances and pieces of writing that I ever heard.    Ake

"A Woman of No Importance," Ake. A bold move for telly all those years ago - late 70s, early 80s? - just a woman talking to the camera. That was way before Bennett's Talking Heads series, though the script was included when the Talking Heads scripts were published.

Routledge was originlly destined to be a star of old-style musicals, and had leading roles in several big West End and Broadway productions in the 1950s and 1960s. No fault of hers, but every show flopped. I've never seen any sign of rancour or regret that the singing side of her career didn't pan out.

Thanks Fionn..I had forgotten the title of that piece.
Interesting about her failed musical career.
Hope you were as moved by the Bennett monologue as I was ,all those years ago,it said much about the "human condition ".....Ake

Thinking of the miseading thread titles thread, I just misread this one as Penelope Rutledge..etc.

Hard to imagine that Twillingstgate would let that pass unmarked.

I'm not at all clear about why Miss Rutledge is being awarded the OBE, but I'm certain that she deserves it. Although I'm still recovering from wounds, I'm certain that all of Twillingsgate is abuzz with this news.

Bravo, Penelope!

Alan Bennett, who wrote that play she was in, declined some similar honour, Fat Bastard. I'm puzzled by Hank's decision, which was said to be for "personal and private reasons." A fine musician, in a fine band, but because of his association with Cliff Richard I assumed he must be exactly the kind of prat who would love a gong. Sounds like he might be a decent geezer after all.

Seems like more and more people are refusing their honours.... Benjamin Zephaniah (black poet, lives down my road) sent his back at New Year too.... but was a little less reticent about his reasons!

Although the background of the two women is different ,there are similarities in the psychology....Suspension of reality..ect

OBE is actually Officer of the Order of the British Empire, the other grades being (in descending, erm, order):

Knight/Dame of the Order of the British Empire (K/DBE)
Officer...             (OBE)
Companion...       (CBE)
Member...          (MBE)

[/pedant]

Thanks for the clarification, Schantieman.

But being pedantic: your [/pedant] is missing its [pedant] pendant ;-)

I believe the latest standard allows an implied [pedant]. It is normally more important for clear understanding that the [/pedant] be present.

Well, of course, there is something to be said for "in body" experiences too... :-)

But I don't want to arouse the wrath of La Rutledge by saying anything further about that.

jOhn - from the sound of some of the Hull postings, you shouldn't have to go down to London to receive (or lose) your honour. I'm sure there's plenty of old queens who would oblige up there !

Hi all,

Just to make it clear:

In 1992, Patricia Routledge was voted BBC Television Personality of the Year.

In 1993 she was awarded the OBE.

This year (2004) receives a CBE.

Oh, wise and wonerful Joe Clones, could you change the name of this thread to: Patricia Routledge CBE. Thank you.

DING!

According to Schantieman, an OBE is higher than a CBE - so was she downgraded?

And I repeat my previous question: is P. Routledge connected in any way to Mudcatter John Routledge?
