This is a wonderful song, also recorded by Peter, Paul and Mary. I found the chords here. For more Cheryl Wheeler information, try www.cherylwheeler.com.

75 SEPTEMBERS

Capo I

D: x00232
Csus2: x30033
G/B: x20033
D/F#: 20023x
Esus/Ab: 42220x
D/C#: x40232

The only part of the song that's even remotely tricky is the little five-note signature riff off of the A7 chords I've indicated with an asterisk. You'll start with the standard A7 chord, which is formed x02020. But then you'll play a little run that will highlight the notes as I've indicated them here in bold:

X0202x
x0203x (Don't actually pluck that 3rd fret on the 2nd string . . . hammer it instead)
x020x0
x0200x
x0202x

It's actually very simple . . . just play along with the CD and you'll be able to handle it in no time.

Intro: (D)(Csus2)(G/B)(A7*) . . . (D)(Csus2)(G/B)(A7*)

In the (D)year of the yellow (Csus2)cab
(G/B)Shadow of the great world (A7*)war
The (D)third kid grandmom (Csus2)had
(G/B)Came into this (A7)world
On a (G)rolling farm in (A)Maryland
When (D)Wilson (D/C#)was the (G)president
As (Em)summer (D/F#)blew her (G)goodbye (Esus/Ab)through the (A)trees

A (D)child of changing (Csus2)times
Growing (G/B)up between the (A7*)wars
(D)Fords rolled off the (Csus2)lines
And (G/B)bars all closed their (A7)doors
And (G)I imagine (A)you back then
With (D)snap brim (D/C#)hat and (G)farmer's tan
Where (Em)horses (D/F#)drew their (G)wagons (Esus/Ab)through the (A)fields

Now the (G)fields are all four (A)lanes
And the (D)moon's not just a (G)name
Are you (Em)more a(D/F#)mazed at (G)how things change
Or (Bm)how they (A)stay the (D)same
And do you (G)sit here on this (A)porch and wonder
(D)How the (D/C#)time flies (G)by
Or (Em)does it seem to (D/F#)barely creep a(G)long
With (Em)seventy (D/F#)five (G)Septembers (A)come and (D)gone (Csus2)(G/B)(A7*)

(D)(Csus2)(G/B)(A7*)

Were the (D)fields all gold and (Csus2)fawn
Was the (G/B)spring house dark and (A7*)cool
Did the (D)rooster crow at (Csus2)dawn
When they (G/B)got you up for (A7)school
And (G)would you tell me (A)once again
The (D)tales of (D/C#)granddad's (G)hired men
And (Em)how they (D/F#)drove the (G)old dirt (Esus/Ab)road to (A)town

'Cause now the (G)fields are all four (A)lanes
And the (D)moon's not just a (G)name
Are you (Em)more a(D/F#)mazed at (G)how things change
Or (Bm)how they (A)stay the (D)same
And do you (G)sit here on this (A)porch and wonder
(D)How the (D/C#)time flies (G)by
Or (Em)does it seem to (D/F#)barely creep a(G)long
With (Em)seventy (D/F#)five (G)Septembers (A)come and (D)gone (Csus2)(G/B)(A7*)

(D)(Csus2)(G/B)(A7*)

In the (D)year of the yellow (Csus2)cab
(G/B)Shadow of the great world (A)war

75 SEPTEMBERS
Cheryl Wheeler-
©1992 Amachrist Music, ASCAP / Penrod & Higgins, ASCAP

In the year of the yellow cab
In the shadow of the great world war
The third kid grandmom had
Came into this world
On a rolling farm in Maryland
When Wilson was the President
And summer blew her good-bye through the trees

A child of changing times
Growing up between the wars
The Fords rolled off the line
And bars all closed their doors
And I imagine you back then
With snap brim hat and farmer's tan
Where horses drew their wagons through the fields

chorus:
Now the fields are all four lanes
And the moon's not just a name
Are you more amazed at how things change
Or how they stay the same
And do you sit here on this porch and wonder
How the time flies by
Or does it seem to barely creep along
With 75 Septembers come and gone

Were the fields all gold and fawn
Was the spring house dark and cool
Did the rooster crow at dawn
When they got you up for school
And would you tell me once again
The tales of grandad's hired men
And how they drove the old road to town

chorus:
