While I tend to agree with sledge on his premise, I do feel that an objrctive discussion of commercialised sports including football is worthwhile.
The first problem is the malign influence of Rupert Murdoch. His injections of enormous cash into sport for the benefit of Sky TV and other channels he controls, has distorted the system.
This has resulted in sportsmen [sic] being paid obscene amounts of money. It has also distorted TV viewing, with the TV companies calling the shots re kick off times etc, so they suit the company schedules.
This influences youngsters in some cases by making them think that to become rich and famous, neither education or manners are a necessary adjunct to life. So they leave school early, or concentrate on sports to the exclusion of more mundane things like the three Rs. They can't all be superstars, so inevitably many become disillusioned and bored, and end up in bad company.
It has also put people off following sport because of its mercenary attitudes.
Then there is the situation where a British football team turns out for a match with not one Briton in the team. How does that foster sport in our own people? What it seems to do in most cases is, reduce the pool of good players when it comes to selecting a national side. If you don't bring on your own players, you don't have the choice!
Giok

all these are rubbish

s6k,

Buy any paper expect the Daily Star, read the tv guide and then you won't accidently stumble onto any sports being broadcast, you can also use this portion to avoid house design programs, amazing eh! Then you are advised to only read the front portion of the paper as the sports often are to be found in the rear portion. When buying this paper, use a large shop as you are less likely to be inconvinienced by Cheeky mothers with prams. When buying the paper, thoroughly examine all bananas also being purchased and eat them in good time, this should stop mouldy bananas being a factor in your day to day existence. As for the burnt toast, I suggest you get a new toaster and refuse all offers of toast from those with substandard toast making skills.

I hope this info is of use to you.

Muppet, if you think cricket can be a peaceful sport, try watching a match in Bangladesh, I have, if the wrong team wins all mayhem breaks loose, makes a lot of football fans seem like naughty choir boys by comparison.

Football is a wonderful game but it has huge problems that no one seems willing to address: Given the vast sums of money involved, cheating amounts to serious fraud. Manipulation of the referee by diving etc. should be severely punished. The referee's decision should stand for the duration of a game but if TV cameras can prove that a wrong decision changed the outcome of a game, the player/club responsible should be fined an amount equivalent to their gain from winning. That would stop it.

The other problem is the enourmous influence football "heroes" have on children. Watching school matches it is not uncommon to see children diving, feigning innocence and spitting. Why can't the professionals behave like sportsmen? Can't they be stopped? They should be prevented from exerting their influence ie. not televised. Football these days just isn't cricket.

Rant over.

the trouble with fans is demonstrated very clearly on this page.

if you point out that Christianity(perm any three religious leaders) or Karl marx has lead to millions of murders and horrific violence - and the true fan says - ah yes but Cristianity or true Marxism has never been tried......

When you say football is rubbish, given the millions we have to pay to protect ourselves from the fans, the endless tripe talked about it, the awful public conduct of many of the players..... they ah but true football is a wonderful thing, it's just never been tried......

No it is BIG business, entertainment, a political hot potato (no politician will make laws that upset the fans) and the opiate of many.

But rubbish is too nebulous a word, and sport far too distant for it.

Futball didn't use to be rubbish but I think it is now. I saw a programme (drama) many years ago, starring (name slipped mind - him who was in Minder) - yes, Dennis waterman. It was about the VERY first World Cup - forgotten about because it was before First World War. And the main league wasn't interested - sisn't think it would work. So it was left to the Sunday leagues to sort out. And the VERY first World Cup was WON by a Sunday League team from Bishop Aukland against Jeuventas (?) - all miners, who didn't 'hold' with training - wonderful programme.

I think the cup was stolen from the clubhouse about ten years ago.

Just want to say I'm really sorry for all those English football fans I know it does mean a lot to them - despite my feelings about the game.

Still perhaps its gonna be a special year for Portugal like 66 was for us - host nation etc - and maybe every country deserves to have one of those.

Football fans are in the minority
It is just that the majority have diverse interests and so are "no-counts"

40,000 UK football fans travelled to Portugal - 10 pages in the average comic plus special pull-outs.

60,000 UK fans travelled to Le Mans the same weekend and where is the reportage? Just for the record I prefer 3 wheeled sport - no reportage whatsover in those comics despite the reigning and record breaking 8 times World Champion being ENGLISH.

AND the minority shall inherit the earth - YOU WANNA ARGUE?

You can have your ball back NOW - but I will leave it in Guernsey if you are brave enough to venture there at present.

Try quoting figures when the season starts again, each and every premiership ground is a sell out, most of the first division as well, plus the many that attend grounds all the way down to the minor leagues. And thats just the UK.

""my hospitals, my TV, my newspapers" Jeez you must be loaded" must be why you can afford to live in geurnsey. (just jelous)

Never mind, only seven weeks till the season opens again, hehe.

Not seen the news about Guernsey obviously.

Similar heads in sand dept

Ibrox Park
Bradford City
Heisel Stadium
Hillsborough

spot the stadium full of sensible law abiding football fans - how could it possibly happen? Large numbers of people are a potential hazard and because the individuals wouldn't harm a fly that goes for 40,000 individuals doesn't it? Only in cranial sub-sand.
But then what do football fans know about crowd psychology?

Meanwhile: Ceilidh dancing can be dangerous - I am off to the physio dept of Stroud Hospital - financed and instigated by workers contributuions - a community initiative - my community.

As for the sand, can't help but have my head in it out here, the Sahara is a pretty sandy place, and after last nights sandstorm the sand has reached places I would rather it hadn't.

Sorry if I have missed any Guernsey news, the news stirred up by events in Iraq tend to occupy our tv viewing and net access to a large degree, the footie provides some much needed relief the rest of the time. As does the cat!
