Which is correct? Officially, The Netherlands is always used but most people say Holland. I know there are two regions called North and South Holland.

The Dutch are the people who live in H or The N and is obviously related to the word Deutsch. I don't know whether they are confused or not but I am.

I lived in the Netherlands for 7 years. North and South Holland are just two of the provinces of the country called the Netherlands.

They call themselves Netherlanders - not Dutch. This latter term was coined by the English-speaking world back in the 19th century and simply arose out of confusion. The "Netherlanders" never had anything to do with the term.

And just a little aside: The country of Netherland should NOT be confused with the "Low Lands", which is a 17th century term referring to the combined area of (most of) Netherlands and Flanders, which were below sea level.

The reason why the football team is still called Holland, may be similar to the historical reasons that dictate that the British cricket team is called England.

A quick glance at the list of UN member nations finds Netherlands in the list but no Holland.

I lived in the Nederlands for 13 years.

And they call themselves Nederlanders.

Holland is no longer a country in its own right but a privince or state of the Netherlands. This has been the case since the 19th Century, I believe. There is a north and a south Holland.

I could also point out that Holland is an area of Lincolnshire bordering parts of The Wash and contains Boston, Spalding and surrounding areas.

Ed, there isn't a British cricket team, there is an English and Welsh cricket team which is not the same. I had assumed the possibility that 'England = Britain' was the same as 'Holland = The Netherlands' and that was the main reason for raising the question. By the way, lowlands is another expression for netherlands.
