I met a happily half-drunk Blackwatch member up in Scotland who was chanting something that began:

"Oh well and hey wee man, wi' a big stick in his/your(?) hand..."

...and that's all I got. Maybe it's from some lengthy Scots poem or military chant, or what? Any clues?

Well, there's mention of it in this message.
That's a start, at least.

Subject: ADD: Hey Wee Man

Something along these lines as far as I can remember...

Hey Wee Man
Wi' the big stick in your hand
Won't you play me a simple melodee
Oh-oh-oh
Just to remind me of the girl I left behind me
Won't you play me a simple melodee
Oh-oh-oh

Ahm comin' back bonnie Ma-ry
Ahm comin' back tae you
Ahm comin' back in the good ol' summertime
When the bagpipes are playin'
For Auld Lang Syne

I know that you'll be waiting
To greet me with a smile
We'll roam the hills together
Among the purple heather
Bonny Mary O' Argyll

Oh well we held a grand procession
And we marched before the Queen
The bravest band of warriors
The world had ever seen
She thought we were the zulus from the land beyond the Nile
Until she heard us singin' Bonnie Mary O' Argyll

An we were all Scotsmen every wan a Scotsman
Buffalo Bill frae Maryhill
He never worked and never will
Aye man believe it if ye can
They'll be reelin' wae jokes an tartan socks
Scotsmen every wan
Hooch-aye!

This reminds me of the genre called patchwork songs, in which the lyrics consist of titles of other songs.

The London Scottish sing this in memory of being part of the 1st Battalion, 51st Highland Volunteers during the 70s-90s. We sang it again with visiting members of the Liverpool Scottish at our "G" Company dinner last night 26th Feb 10, and used to finish it with the last line "Gerroff me barrow"; this is now "Gerroff me sister".
But I remember hearing another verse along the lines of
"The 51st Division went to France to fight the war,
They looked for days, they looked for nights, but couldnae find the war,
Something something someting..
Says Monty to the 51st get up and get yer guns,
For we're all Scotsmen etc etc

Incidentally, we also sang Billy Connolly's "I am a TA soldier, and the World is scared of me..."

We add another verse to what is listed above:-

So let the Irish sing of their Emerald Isle
Where the 4 leaf clover grows,
And let the Engish sing of their valleys and their Dales,
Their bonny blooming rose.
But give me the land of the heather and the kilt,
The mountains and the rivers.
For the blood runs through my viens,
When I hear those bagpipes play,
Scotland, dear old Scotland Forevvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvver.

Subject: Lyr Add: HEY WEE MAN (Royal Regiment of Scotland)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 16 Aug 10 - 10:55 AM

This is from a handbook called "Regimental Marches, Tunes and Songs [of] the Royal Regiment of Scotland (Scots)" which you can see in PDF format here. There is no indication of a tune. (There is no musical notation in the book, but there are names of many tunes, but none for this song.)

HEY WEE MAN

Hey Wee Man wi the Big Stick in your hand
Won't you play a simple melody
Just to remind me of the girl I left behind me.
Won't you play a simple melody.

For I'm coming back Bonny Mary,
I'm coming back to you.
I'm coming back to the good old summer time,
Where the Bagpipes are playing for Auld Lang Syne.
And I know she will be waiting, to greet me with a smile.
For we roam the hills together, amongst the purple heather.
Bonny Mary O'r Argyll.

Well we held a Grand Procession as we marched before the Queen.
Ten thousand Kilted Warriors the like you've never seen.
At first they thought we were Zulus from the Bank beyond the Nile.
Until you heard us singing Bonny Mary O'r Argyll.

For we're all Scotsmen, everyone's a Scotsman.
Buffalo Bill from Maryhill, never worked and never will.
Aye Man, believe it if you can.
There was Heilan jocks wi Tartan Socks.
Scotsmen Everyone.

Through the day and through the night.
Wi' our brasses shining bright.
We set out from Milton Bridge in Battle Order.
From the Harwich to the Hook, and on to Barrack's Brook.
We're the First* Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland.

It was there we had a laugh.
We were stationed with the RAF.
In a wee place in the hills that they called Gatow.
Well we fought the Yorks and Lancs.
We're the First* Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland.

For Border* lads and wild are we.
And ill to keep in order.
There's no a toon compares the Crown.
Hawick's Queen of all the Borders.*

* Battalion variation in lyrics.

I took a trip to China that's where Lipton made his tea
Strolling round and round just to see what I could see
I looked into a window shop and much to my surprise
Twa wee lanky Chinamen sitting scoffing pies

For they were all Scotsmen everyone a Scotsmen
some were there fae old Kinross, Gallowgate and Gorbals cross
Och aye believe it if you like
we're the son of the heather, fought together Scotsmen everyone

These were lyrics I learned from a couple of Glasgow boys in the seventies.

We used to sing first

We're a marching band and we're singing as we go
to the promised land where the beer and whisky flow
and we're all TT you cna tell us by our noise
we belong to the salvation army

could you go could you go
if a fellow came up to you and said hello hello hello
oh your looking might queer could you go a pint of beer
could i no could i no could i no

Saltorius saltorius
there only a pint of beer amongst the four of us
oh your looking mighty queer could you go a pint of beer
could i no could i no could i no

terr a rum tum terram
terrae um tum tum

Well we held a Grand Procession as we marched before the Queen.
Ten thousand Kilted Warriors the like you've never seen.
At first they thought we were Zulus from the Bank beyond the Nile.
Until you heard us singing Bonny Mary O'r Argyll.

Ahhhhh, the memories.
A dear old woman from Rutherglen used to sing "Hey Wee Man" (or as she called it "Mary of Argyll") in our local when she came on holiday during the Glasgow fair. She had the lounge bar loupin'.
