I spent the weekend at carter Fold, for their 30th annual Catrer Family Memorial festival. Camping was free, and admissions was $20.00 for two days. Lots of good jamming.
Acts included Carter Family with Bill Clifton, Robin & Linda Williams, Kitty and Vernon McIntyres' Blugrass band, Red Clay Ramblers, Mike Stevens & Raymond McClain, Mike Fenton, Bluegrass Edition, Wry Straw, LeRoy Troy, Larry Sigmon and Barbara Poole, etc.
They were all good. But, the act that "brought down the house" was Sigmon (banjo) and Poole (upright base). People at the Carter Fold like to dance, and Poole and Sigmon could fill the dance floor!!!
My favorite act was LeRoy Troy. He followed Poole and Sigmon, walking out with his banjos all by himself. I felt sorry for him, having to follow them. But, in five ninutes, he had the whole crowd in the palm of his hand. He dis some banjo tricks, (al'a Dave Macon), that were incredible.
Also, Kitty McIntyre was terrific, with her fiddlin and stage presence. Boy, she was exciting!!!
Played with people from all over USA. Eight mebers of our local old time club attended. Great time. I wanted to go on over to Galax, but I had to come home to get my kids off to college.
Firts weekend in August each year.
