I dunno if this is true in older versions of Windows, but in XP you can choose your "My Pictures" folder as a screensaver option. Within that, you can set it to expand pix to fill the screen. (Blurry unless you are across the room.) You choose how long images will linger. There is also the option of using the sideways-pointing arrow keys on the keyboard, to go back to the image you just saw, to see it again. And an option to run an unobtrusive strip at the top of the photo showing the filename, so you can easily find something you want to send to a friend or recall what the heck the shot IS.

Me, I clean some of them out of the folder each month so the screensaver draws from new material before I get too bored. And I keep the contents of the month's folder down to a number that cycles "often enough."

So now my new hobby is finding and saving lovely photographs. Just for personal use. And the occasional email.

Old sheet music covers.

Cycling photos.

Friends. Especially Mudcat friends.

Travel and tourism site photos, postcards, posters.

Comic book covers, Life magazine covers....

Dover postcards.

'Net comix.

Animal photos and fish catalog photos. Poultry.

MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS.....

A particular favorite source at the moment is HERE. Discover the slideshow features allowing a short relaxation break, themselves!

And a VERY nice break from reality can be had (instead of TV or more-Mudcatting-than-you-know-is-good-for-you) by listening to FREE DOWNLOADS from the OLD TIME RADIO CATALOG while the screensaver runs. Lapcat, lap robe, and cuppa, optional.

Enjoy!

In previous versions, I know that a single picture could be selected as the desktop.

And here I thought from the thread title you were posting a picture of yourself...      8-{E

No, bb, but I am considering suggesting another topic, above the line. At cycling forums, they have threads called BIKE PORN. There is no human nudity involved-- just pix (or links to pix) of gleaming bicycle design artistry.

So.... INSTRUMENT PORN. Like, for me, great photos of Orthey autoharps, that would be instrument porn, to me.

Only problem is, if we run threads by that kind of title, people looking for real filth will Google their way here, and the ads on the bottom of the thread ... well..... uh oh, maybe I've already said far too much!

Ooops, I notice the ads are for some free screensaver programs. Look out-- I fell for that once and got a lot of nasty spyware and adware, AND they were LOUSY screensavers!

I love the Hubble telescope pictures. They are available at the NASA site I think, but you can search for them with Google.

eye candy

Brain the size of a planet and all it does is behave like a mirror, or photo album at best.

now software that could display any pic of the email sender you have stored - that is function

but pretty pictures - I think not. FWIW screen savers are a common vector for viruses because even if you spot that the jpeg is not a jpeg but a double extension with 50 spaces to hide the true extension - most people don't recognise an .scr as an executable program.

eye candy is complexity to befuddle the science. I won't use such fillips because they slow the machine down, like all the other frippery. Try turning the monitor off if you leave the machine.

The Hubble telescope pictures are some of the VERY best! They have created a special set just to use for screensavers. Right now I have two colliding galaxies.

and then there are places like Cannon Beach, Oregon one of the most photogenic beaches anywhere.

Do remember, the image needs to be about the same size as your screen setting to look right.

I hadn't looked at the screensaver settings in WinXP, because I don't generally use a screensaver. It obscures my desktop picture.

But I do note that there's a "Browse" button that lets you select ANY FOLDER on your machine for the pictures. That means I don't have to move stuff to a particular folder to have it for the screensaver.

So I can have a different artist every day for the next 3 years or so without even going to the web ...

We just checked "her" Win2K machine though, and it doesn't appear to have the ability to choose your own pictures. There probably is a way, but it may require the "Power Toys" kit, or something like that to do it easily. It's probably simpler just to use one of the photo programs, since quite a few of them have screensaver utilities built on.

My favourite screen saver is still the scrolling marquee. I use it to leave messages and insult the cats. Truth told, screen savers are no longer necessary.

Necessary, no-- entertaining and soul-satisfying with good photography, yummy! When Hardi or I are sick or way too worn out, sometimes we just hang out in the dual recliners and soak up the colors and composition, in quiet peace. It's a good way of compensating for having to have the office setup in the living room!
