Subject: BS: KathWestra's Moving to Maine From: KathWestra Date: 21 Sep 04 - 04:49 PM Don't think that I don't love you guys! My long absence from the Mudcat is due not to lack of interest, but to the fact that I've been flying up and down the East coast (U.S., that is) for the past six months talking about and interviewing for what turns out to be my new job at the Island Institute in Rockland, Maine. I've had precious little time online lately. The three cats and I will be heading north on October 7, arriving October 8. I'll be in a short-term, furnished rental in Rockland while I look for a house to buy (and wait for the one I own in Silver Spring, MD, to sell). I'm hoping to meet and connect with other 'Catters up there--and to finding out about any music, contradance, or other interesting gatherings going on within a reasonable distance of midcoast Maine. PM me if you want a new street/mailing address or work/home phone numbers. Also, great bouquets of virtual roses for sometime Mudcatter Lorraine (VanBuren), who has volunteered to drive up there with me and the cats, and to her husband George who's driving a U-Haul with musical instruments, books, houseplants, and other stuff I'll need (or that I don't want the movers to store) between October and whenever I find a house of my own. Be in touch, Mainers! Kathy |
Subject: RE: BS: KathWestra's Moving to Maine From: Bill D Date: 21 Sep 04 - 05:27 PM take good care of her in Maine...or we'll ALL follow her up there. Only reason we let her go is that she promised to come back and visit regularly..... Makes me wish the folk community were the size of Lichtenstein...too many good friends are far away... |

Subject: RE: BS: KathWestra's Moving to Maine From: curmudgeon Date: 21 Sep 04 - 07:13 PM Welcome to New England, Kath. Now you're only two and a half hours away from your coastal NH comrades. We'll keep you posted as to events that are worth the drive. Otherwise, if you're in the neighborhood, Friday evening sessions at the Press Room in Portsmouth start around 4:30; shanty/forebitter sessions there are the third Saturday of the month at 3:30. Happy moving -- Tom |

Subject: RE: BS: KathWestra's Moving to Maine From: KathWestra Date: 21 Sep 04 - 08:20 PM Alas, my new job starts the day after the Getaway, so I won't be there this year. Waaaaaaahhh. But then again, having been unemployed since May 31, it will be nice to have a paycheck... Will hope for the Getaway next year, and lots of songs from New England compadres in the meantime. Kathy p.s. Yes, Rockland has nice lighthouses. Actually, there are gorgeous lighthouses all up and down the Maine coast and on many of the islands. Joe, you must come next summer. There is a BRAND NEW lighthouse museum--quite a big endeavor, actually--scheduled to open in Rockland in the summer of 2005. I'll try to remember to send you some info. on it. They're looking for "charter members" as part of their fundraising effort. kw |

Subject: RE: BS: KathWestra's Moving to Maine From: MaineDog Date: 21 Sep 04 - 10:07 PM Hi, It looks like you will be almost my neighbor, as I (we) live in St. George, and shop in Rockland. There is contradancing in Rockport, N. Whitefield, and sometimes Belfast, all nearby, and also at Bowdoinham, N. Yarmouth, and other places far away. Check it out at www.deffa.org . I won't tell anyone that you're from away. MD |
Subject: RE: BS: KathWestra's Moving to Maine From: Nancy King Date: 21 Sep 04 - 10:15 PM Hey Kathy, we'll sure miss you here, and particularly at the Getaway, but trust you'll get back for the occasional visit. Next year's Getaway for sure! Maybe I'll even see you in Maine one of these times. It's my favorite State and I get there several times each year... Good luck with the relocation process (kudos to Lorraine and George!) and with the new job! Nancy |
Subject: RE: BS: KathWestra's Moving to Maine From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 22 Sep 04 - 05:38 AM Welcome to New England! You're moving to a most beauteous piece of ground, with many fine folks, both Mud and otherwise. A trip to Maine for me is long overdue. Perhaps we'll meet at a Mud event! Allison |
Subject: RE: BS: KathWestra's Moving to Maine From: Tinker Date: 22 Sep 04 - 07:19 AM I'm definately disappointed that we'll miss each other at Getaway this year, but remember I'm well positioned as a midpoint stop when you decide to wander back DC way to visit and such. I suppose we have to accept that mundane issues like jobs occaisionally get in the way of events like Getaway, but I don't have to like it. Best of luck. Kathy |
Subject: RE: BS: KathWestra's Moving to Maine From: GUEST,Georgina Date: 22 Sep 04 - 10:37 AM Very best wishes for success in your new job and house-hunting in Maine. Please keep in touch - Love Georgina, Jim, Barry and Lester |
Subject: RE: BS: KathWestra's Moving to Maine From: Fortunato Date: 22 Sep 04 - 12:26 PM Silver Spring's loss Maine's gain. Of course now that she's out of town maybe we can finally get her booked by the FSGW for a concert as should have happened long since. DC Folk music is losing a limb. Bon Voyage, dear girl. See you around. all the best and cheers, chance |
Subject: RE: BS: KathWestra's Moving to Maine From: Big Mick Date: 22 Sep 04 - 12:40 PM Damn, but I will miss our visits when I come to Silver Spring, but I will just have to come to Maine. Good luck, dear friend, in your new endeavor. Oh yeah...... don't forget to register to vote!!! Let me know when you are coming home to GR. Much love, Mick |
Subject: RE: BS: KathWestra's Moving to Maine From: Charley Noble Date: 22 Sep 04 - 08:56 PM Welcome to Maine! Rockland's a fine place to base yourself. It's a former fishing/industrial port that's been transformed into a headquarters for Maine windjammers. The Farnsworth Art Museum is a must see. There's a monthly song swap at one of the book shops or is it one of the restaurants? I'm located about an hour south in the Town of Richmond on the Kennebec and must of the people I sing with a based around Portland. Over in Camden there's a fine lot of singers including Gordon Bok, Ann Dodson, Glenn Jenks, Bob Stewart, and Nick Apolonio. Have fun exploring. Cheerily, Charley Noble, temporarily in Baltimore |
Subject: RE: BS: KathWestra's Moving to Maine From: karen k Date: 23 Sep 04 - 02:27 AM Kathy, I, too, will miss seeing you at the Getaway and you already know that I am insanely envious of your move to Maine. I'll definitely take you up on your offer to visit. Let me know when the line starts forming. Kudos to Lorraine and George. Tell them hello for me and I'll see them at the Getaway. I'd help you if I could. Make sure you take my phone # in case you get stuck going thru CT. Of course I'd like your new one and address. By the way, Andre was in Rockport. Got my Rock's mixed up. Andre was a famous Harbor seal. Anyone up there can tell you about him. Safe move and hopefully I'll see you soon. Very much love, k |

Subject: RE: BS: KathWestra's Moving to Maine From: KathWestra Date: 23 Sep 04 - 05:49 PM Thanks, everyone! I'm excited. I'm terrified. I'm overwhelmed. Moving Day is two weeks from today, and I am eternally grateful to my friends who are helping with this Momentous Thing. I am battling too many years' worth of junk tossed out of sight in the basement (let that be a lesson to anyone who might need to move someday...). Thanks, MaineDog for the contradance info (and special thanks for not giving away my identity as someone "from away"!--and I'll definitely look at the deffa.org website.) Georgina, you know I'll get a house big enough for all of you to visit--and will even work on arranging a gig whenever you say the word. 'Bout time you came back over the puddle. Chance, maybe a house concert at your place sometime? Would love to do it! Karen, Mick, Spaw and many others--you'll get a change of address in the mail. Do be in touch (and visit, dammit!). Love, Kathy |
Subject: RE: BS: KathWestra's Moving to Maine From: KathWestra Date: 24 Sep 04 - 09:34 AM BTW, Mick, Maine is a "same-day registration" state. I was very worried about voting, and called the town clerk's office in Rockland to check. He told me I can walk in on November 2 with identification and proof that I live in Rockland, and vote in the election. Now that's progressive! Kath p.s. You'd BETTER come visit me in Maine, and bring the girls along! |
Subject: RE: BS: KathWestra's Moving to Maine From: Jeri Date: 24 Sep 04 - 10:54 AM Kath, welcome to the upper right-hand corner of the US! You'll be about 6 hours closer to me. I'll miss you at the Getaway too, and wish there were some way you could make it back - like maybe to close on the sale of your house. Will PM you with my information, in case you don't have it. May the move go well; May your old house sell; May the stress not make you go mad! No Getaway, This year, you say, But maybe you'll make NOMAD? |
Subject: RE: BS: KathWestra's Moving to Maine From: SINSULL Date: 24 Sep 04 - 11:19 AM You have my sympathy Kath. I had a 21 year accumulation of crap to sort through And I moved from a huge apartment to a comparative cubby. I can still see Kendall's face when he saw that the first thing I had unpacked was three ceramic jack o' lanterns. He couldn't understand how anyone could have three. Didn't have the heart to tell him that the others were still packed in another box. Three years later I still haven't sorted through it all. i am considering just tossing it all out. Do keep track of a flannel nightie and a quilt. It gets cold at night here. SINS |
Subject: RE: BS: KathWestra's Moving to Maine From: KathWestra Date: 24 Sep 04 - 02:22 PM Yup, I'll be at NOMAD, Jeri. See you there! SINS, I have no ceramic jack-o-lanterns, but there are MANY other hidden "treasures" that I didn't even know I had. At approximately $1.00 per pound in moving costs (estimates ranged from $8500 to $13,000 for all my stuff), the incentive is fairly powerful to purge. Where did I get all this crap, anyway??????? As I told Jeri in a PM, I have told some of my friends here that I'm thinking of instituting a HomlandSecurity-esque signal system to let them know if it's safe to talk with me on a given day. Different colored flags to signify my hysteria level. Today is "guarded," but I fully anticipate some "elevated" and "severe" alerts before this is all over.... Back to packing. |
Subject: RE: BS: KathWestra's Moving to Maine From: jacqui.c Date: 25 Sep 04 - 06:07 AM Hi Kath I'll be making the move to Maine at about the same time as you and am going through the winnowing process as well. Mine's even worse - it has to be freighted from the UK so the cost is concentrating my mind with a vengeance. Two weeks to go for me and panic has set in - it's only evening folk sessions that are keeping me any where near sane! |
Subject: RE: BS: KathWestra's Moving to Maine From: KathWestra Date: 25 Sep 04 - 02:37 PM Looking forward to meeting you Jacqui! Unfortunately, I won't be at the Getaway when you an Kendall make your debut as Mr. & Mrs., but I'll be sure we find a time not too long after we both arrive to get together and offer mutual congratulations on the move, Big Life Transitions, etc. All best to you, and much happiness. Subject: RE: BS: KathWestra's Moving to Maine From: Naemanson Date: 28 Sep 04 - 01:29 AM Welcome to Maine (from someone who's left it). Rockland is a wonderful area. As for Mainedog not giving away your identity as someone "from away", you don't need to worry. Everyone will know it anyway. You don't have to worry though. Most of them are "from away" too. Make sure you connect with the music folks up in that neck of the woods. Charley Noble is a good one to make introductions. You should look for members of the Quasi-Modal Singers. They are music people and will be able to direct you into more musical happenings. Also be on the lookout for Castlebay (Fred and Julia). Julia is Mudcatter, uh, Julia. They live up the coast from Wiscassett. Nick Apolonio is a hell of a luthier and player. He and Gordon Bok go way back. Anne Dodson is also in that area as is her brother David. Anne's significant other is Mat Shostak who builds hurdy-gurdies. I don't think I am revealing any private information here. These are all professional musicians and most have web sites. Have a great time in the Pine Tree State. Remember that winter doesn't last forever, it just seems to. And Mud Season can be coped with if you stay on the pavement. |
Subject: RE: BS: KathWestra's Moving to Maine From: KathWestra Date: 29 Sep 04 - 04:52 PM Thanks, Naemanson. I know some of the folks you mentioned, some quite well. Play (or try to) a cittern made by Nick A. His instruments have gorgeous, rich sounds. Charley Noble, where do you live? I'll be on the road a week from tomorrow! Aaaacccckkk. Gotta keep packing... Kathy |
Subject: RE: BS: KathWestra's Moving to Maine From: SINSULL Date: 29 Sep 04 - 05:23 PM Kath - Kendall called you "LUV". Wonder where that came from? Wonder if jacqui knows that Onslow is Kendall's hero? Oh nice!!! We will miss you at the Getaway, Kath. How are you transporting the kitties? Mine sang all the way from New York. A nightmare trip! |
Subject: RE: BS: KathWestra's Moving to Maine From: Susan A-R Date: 29 Sep 04 - 08:44 PM Kath, That means you'll be MUCH closer to Vermont. I'm headed for a music party at Wally MacNow's. P'raps in future you'll be able to come over for those. Good luck with the move. Sorry not to see you at the Getaway, but expect I may see more of you here in VT. |

Subject: RE: BS: KathWestra's Moving to Maine From: KathWestra Date: 02 Oct 04 - 05:02 PM Hey Susan, say hello to Helen and Wally and Berta and Suzanne and Danny for me. Wish I could be there tonight! You WILL probably see more of me in Vermont now that I'll be many hours closer. And Bill, to think I thought of you as a friend. I will NOT show that infernal contraption to my kitties! And Mick, I'm having Marble call Esmerelda and ask her to bite you for even thinking of laughing. (Where DO you come up with this stuff, Bill?) Kath, getting more manic by the minute with many, many boxes still to pack. |
