I told Barbara on the Songwriting thread, I'd post the lyrics to this song. The chords are here too. As long as I got the HTML stuff right it should be OK.
  Annabelle _Gillian Welch

(Capo on 5th fret)

Em C
We lease twenty acres and one Ginny mule
B7 Em
From the Alabama Trust
Em C
For half of the cotton and a third of the corn
B7 Em
We get a handfull of dust

Chorus:
C G
We can not have all things to please us
D Em
No matter how we try,
Em C G
'Til we've all gone to Jesus
D Em C D
We can only wonder why

Had a daughter, called her Annabelle
She's the apple of my eye
Tried to give her something like I never had
Never want to ever hear her cry

(Chorus)
(Inst)

When I'm dead and buried I'll take a hard life of tears
From every day I've ever known
And Anna's in the churchyard, she got no life at all
She only got these words upon the stone

(Chorus)

Thank you, Dave. I see what you mean. That last verse, line...
Does she have any recordings out?
Blessings,
Barbara

Hi Barbara,
Yes, she has two CD's out:
"Revival", Almo Sounds, 1996
"Hell Among The Yearlings", Almo Sounds, 1998
She was recently on "Austin City Limits" on PBS if you ca get it. Also, she was featured on the Prairie Home Companion radio show a while back. They have a web site and I believe they have back issues of shows so you might be able to hear her there. The link is phc.mpr.org or try clicking here. I'll check the link and re-post it if it's not right.

Actually, I found the link to the actual show archive with Gillian Welch. Use this link to go to the site. Search the page to find "Gillian Welch" You whould be able click on the songs and hear them played, assuming you have RealAudio installed on you PC.
I'd like to hear what you think if you're able to listen to the songs.
Dave T

I gave the PHC link a listen, Dave, and I can tell she writes nice country tunes and sings a lovely melody/harmony with her partner, but, real audio or no, I couldn't make out enough of the words to follow the verses. It sounds like they taped it off the radio - on a sunspot day - rather than through the mike. Or maybe it's my computer, but it looks like I may just have to get the album, hmmm?
Blessings,
Barbara

Put "Revival" on the CD player about 4days ago. Been listening to it every night.Particularly this song.I've got the back-up nailed at this point. No capo.Am/F with thumb/E.

Put it on constant repeat about 2 hours ago and went looking for printable lyrics. The lyrics are in the liner notes, but why write it out longhand when the modern miracle of the cyber world is here.

Went through Cowpie, and several other lrics sites I have bookmarked. Then went to Google. Arrived here by the last link on the first page Google gave me.

I know. Shoulda started here.

rr

PS Should be able to be singing it within next couple of days. Then weeks spent learning David Rawlings lead licks.

Dave T, she has 3 albums. Her latest is 'Time (The Revelator)' Acony ACNY-0103. At first, I did not like it as much as her previous 2 albums, but it is growing on me with every play, particularly the title track and the wonderful 'Elvis Presley Blues'.
