Subject: help with Northumbrain pipes From: GUEST,new piper Date: 06 Oct 04 - 02:20 AM I have just purchased a set of pipes - anyone any suggestions of good tutor books websites? |
Subject: RE: help with Northumbrain pipes From: GUEST,MCP Date: 06 Oct 04 - 04:12 AM You could start with The Northumbrian Pipers' Society website, which has a lot of information, references and suppliers of tune books available and discography (though no tutor books as far as I could see. But no doubt someone there could advise you). You might also look at The Northumbrian Smallpipes Encyclopaedia Mick |

Subject: RE: help with Northumbrain pipes From: 8_Pints Date: 06 Oct 04 - 08:28 AM Hi 'newpiper'! I used the 'A Basic Tutor for the Northumbrian Small Pipes' by Richard Butler printed in 1976. It doesn't have an ISBN reference, but it might have acquired one by now though. There is no substitute for playing with other pipers and getting their advice on reed adjustment, fettling, etc. So I would echo Mick's comments about getting in touch with Northumbrian Pipers Society to find out where meetings occur in your area. Colin Ross, the Chairman, is considering conducting distance learning for anyone interested in reed making but numbers might be limited. Good luck! PM me if you have any problems you think I could assist you with. Bob vG |
Subject: RE: help with Northumbrain pipes From: 8_Pints Date: 06 Oct 04 - 08:42 AM In fact you could tell us what type of set you have (7 keys in F is typical), who built the set and your own previous experience with other instruments, etc. All of this will help clarifying problems you are likely to encounter. Subject: RE: help with Northumbrain pipes From: GUEST,Steve Date: 06 Oct 04 - 08:48 AM Hi I found John Leistman's book to be very useful - available from the NPS and useful for the "isolated" piper. I would echo others' comments regarding getting in touch with other pipers wherever possible. Membership of the NPS is invaluable, and well worth the £10 spent. Good luck Steve. |
Subject: RE: help with Northumbrain pipes From: Red and White Rabbit Date: 08 Oct 04 - 01:57 AM new piper also just bought a set of pipes by Burleigh in F and living in HUddersfield (UK). I had a brief encounter with Scottish bagpipes as a teenager and play all sorts of instruments badly! I played clarinet saxaphone ( so I am used to the difficulties with single reeds but not double) whistles and low whistles + various stringed instruments. Have got Butlers book too anyone any ideas for me Sue |
Subject: RE: help with Northumbrain pipes From: John Routledge Date: 08 Oct 04 - 04:21 AM Richard Butler's book is excellent and less than half the price of John Leistman's. HOWEVER Leistman's book is more comprehensive and very readable and informative and is very highly recommended. R&WR will post further when I get back from Banbury. |

As steve guest suggests join the NSP for 10 quid at www.northumbrianpipers.org.uk 3. If you are new to the pipes DO NOT mess about with the drones stock - find a piper to show you 4. there are plenty of NSPipers in the Huddersfield area contact me off line for names If you fancy a run over to Beverley pleased to help Finally good luck with this sublime instrument cue Ted Cheers |
